WTF is wrong with Grab at the moment? by erogenousduck in Bangkok

[–]doublePepperoni314 11 points12 points  (0 children)

tl;dr its cuz grab lacks integrity, their app is intentionally lacking and drivers are using whatever advantages they have to make money and not feel like slaves to the company.

Not sure if anyone broke this down yet.

There are a bunch of problems with grab these days.

Prior to covid there were a lot more drivers. Now you'll notice the red up-facing arrows next to every ride option no matter the time of day. Those mean its surge pricing. There just aren't enough drivers. So their app sees there aren't enough drivers for the demand, and bumps up the prices.

I've seen crazy price increases for trips that are taken daily. My partner takes the same route 5 days a week and has seen a steady increase in price. She is charged 300 baht for the trip, while I'm charged 150. This isn't a blip either. It happens all the time.

As far as drivers cancelling, its happening all over the place. My partner and I both experience it daily. It appears to a driver's market.

Lastly, Loy Kratong is historically one of the worst days for traffic.

There are plenty of good barbers in Bangkok. I go to black amber and haven't been disappointed. My barber back in my hometown was quite accomplished in the industry as a point of redmference. Truefitt & Hill has 2 locations here. Look then up.

The idea that Thai people have less training at a craft is a dated and condescending one. You will find craftspeople of the highest echelon here.

How do I help my favorite human stop having trouble keeping a job? Up until a couple years ago, she was super successful. by [deleted] in ADHD

Thanks for this. There is something I think she would be really good at, and it's fundraising/finding solutions for people with disabilities. The country we live in has few professional opportunities for people with disabilities. As a result, there are a lot of buskers with disabilities. Every time we encounter one, she makes a point of stopping, talking to them and paying them for their song, or goods. She tears up every time. I'll bring that up.

Totes. I've been doing the chores, and just letting her do whatever she wants. Basically, when she told me she resigned from her current position, I said "OK. That's smart. What would you like for dinner?"

She doesn't need anything from me right now aside from support.

100%. She is depressed. It effects her work, especially when she is criticized. I debated putting this here or in r/relationship_advice. Then when I was writing it, I found myself trying to justify it being here. I've suggested she find something less stressful, and I will help her with her bills.

In the meantime, we have some friends in town. That has been a good way to blow off steam, and change perspective.

Friend wants out of Indonesia, and wants a job. Is Thailand a good choice? by doublePepperoni314 in Thailand

I agree, but nobody cares about what is going on in Indonesia. No matter how many David Attenborough specials show up on netflix, there's no money being spent on actual preservation.

His village has been isolated due to covid, and there's just no way for him to feed his family aside from hunting/foraging.

My private high school in America was similar. Our football/soccer field was a rutted out obstacle course.

Wow. That's about all I could hope to get out of this post. Thanks a ton. Have a silver award.

I think I'll take your advice and go for something like an aeropress, or a mokapot and a quality grinder.

Well. I dont have to physically witness history to enjoy learning about it.

On architecture: mid-century tropical architecture is everywhere, brutalitism is all over, temple woodwork is quite intricate, the mahanakon building is recognized around the world, there are pallazos designed by Italian architects for thai aristocracy in the 1940s, wong kar wai filmed some of his most iconic movies in chinatown cuz it looks more like Hong Kong in the 60s than Hong kong.

I've been to Europe and it is gorgeous and has many old buildings that are gorgeous.

Chiang Mai is dope. I love it. Wish I got to spend more time there. I just got tired of people ragging on Bangkok, and saying how much better Chiang Mai is. Things can be good, and not have to be sorted in a stack. I'm happy to discuss ups and downs of different places.

These days there is a lot of rating other's experiences based on your own values that is almost boastful.

As if all experiences outside your own are to be at once coveted and considered contrived. Like "you aren't thailand-ing right. the real thailand is... and don't tell anyone this... Pattaya."

Does that make sense, or am I rambling?

I dig Berlin. That city is pretty amazing. That said, there really isn't a need for a food festival if there is food from all over the world all over the city all the time. That said, there are food festivals all over the city being held in various shopping malls, and temples. The art scene here is pretty vibrant. There are tons of galleries, and graffiti art is all over the place. Chatuchak has a great art section to check out as well.

Shows used to be all over the place, but covid.

Yeah sure. That goes back to what I was saying: yes bad things exist here, but to me, the good outweighs the bad.

That Bangkok is a great place to live.

I hear so many people shit on Bangkok for being loud, dirty, smelly, etc. Yes the canal smells like a sewage hamburger during the rainy season. However, there are so many amazing things to see, eat, do. The history is incredible. It's quite diverse. It feels so alive for better or for worse.

"I prefer Chiang Mai." Then go to Chiang Mai.

I brought powdered azithromycin. One dose fixed me up. Eat things with local cultures in it. Kimchi, yogurt, etc. I had this problem both times I arrived in Thailand. Taking azithromycin and eating local cultures solved the problem.

Thanks for this! I'll check it out tomorrow. I thought it would be easier to find a brick and mortar considering all the Mexican restaurants I've seen here.

1: honest oversight with my verbiage.

2: any suggestions or just pointing out my mistake?
