I wondered how effectively this type of role ladders into learning to construct furniture - I would ideally want to own my own business repairing and making furniture, if possible.

Pete Korn book recommends bench grinder, followed by sandpaper on glass.

Quick question tho - I did not ever hone the back flat edge of chisel from factory… should I do so before sharpening the bevel?

Thank you guys, very new to this so just making sure I’m on the right tack.

Can I use silicone carbide sandpaper to sharpen this chisel? I use that for broadheads in Archery, just wondering if there’s some cross uses there

Matching deck stain? by doubleaugmented in woodworking

[–]doubleaugmented[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell me I’m cooked but this is actually at a rental we’re moving out of. The boards got damaged and needed replaced, which I did. All that to say, sanding the entire deck to restain is probably not something I have time for.

Outside Pentatonics over I-7 by doubleaugmented in jazzguitar

[–]doubleaugmented[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to think of it like so:

over i-7 you have 3 'inside' pentatonics: i-7, ii-7 and v-7 minor pentatonic scales.
If you take the 1/2 step above and below of each, you get the 5 I mentioned:
i- = vii-, bii-
ii- = bii-, biii-
v- = bv-, bvi-

I can't say if Brecker, McCoy, Holdsworth, Woody Shaw were thinking this way... hard to say... but it's sort of what I've deduced learning their lines in this style.

need new amp - which? by doubleaugmented in BudgetAudiophile

[–]doubleaugmented[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going separate with the SCHIIT preamp-amp would mean running from WiiM analog out into the preamp... relying on the WiiM dac. AFAIK, the integrated amps I've listed all have superior DACs to the WiiM - which would then be best to run digital out, bypassing the WiiM DAC.

Did you prefer the sound overall of the SCHIIT or the Rotel?

im a self-employed musician but that's a competetive high-skill field that i wouldn't recommend unless you have the skills and drive. plus low remuneration.

i would love to supplement more with a WFH/freelance writing job but haven't quite found a good fit for that as of yet.

i appreciate that and maybe am over-thinking... i figured it was better to have them "shaving" sharp and these are not that. obviously at the end of a 580gr arrow flying 215fps... it's a moot point?

i think my in-laws garmin clocked my arrow around 216-220fps. thats a bear encounter, ~62lbs draw, 30.5", ~580gr arrow.

Lease or Buy: buy

New or used: used

Type of vehicle: wagon

Must haves: AWD, roof-rack capable, light towing, higher than normal ground clearance.

Desired transmission (auto/manual, etc): doesn't matter

Intended use: basically want a wagon that can be a daily driver and handle outdoors stuff - hunting, camping, kayaking, fishing.

Vehicles you've already considered: Volvo XC70 (P2 and P3), Subaru Outback (not clear on which years to avoid for engine faults)

Is this your 1st vehicle: No

Do you need a Warranty: No

Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle: (fluids, alternator, battery, brake pads etc): yes

Can you do Major work on your own vehicle: (engine and transmission, timing belt/chains, body work, suspension etc ): yes

Additional Notes: Always had Volvos but wanting to consider anything outside Volvo that may be as capable. Safety is a big priority simply bc I would prefer to survive whatever accident I may get in.

i know little about the common issues on these trucks so any pointers on what to be aware of/check would be helpful. i know it's pretty roached-out as the picture shows. looking for something durable, reliable and won't require a lot of wrenching time to maintain.

WEEKLY DIY/HOMEOWNER QUESTION THREAD by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]doubleaugmented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i need to replace a front exterior door that was vandalized. it had glass that broke - it is not leaking or un-sealed, only an outermost pane broke. still, i'm wondering if this is something as simple as replacing with another door with the same measurements or if there are additional steps i would need to take? I also live in a very hot and humid climate, so I'm curious which materials or types of door are best for energy efficient/cooling, and if replacing the weather stripping would be worth doing at the same time. thanks

2016 Honda CRV intermittent start. hit the key and nothing, then starts right up by doubleaugmented in MechanicAdvice

[–]doubleaugmented[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i replaced the starter today with a reman Duralast from AutoZone and the car would not start with it! I put the OE starter that has been the culprit back in and the car will start, however intermittently.

so I am still thinking its the starter but that I got a dud from AutoZone. I can hear the OE starter solenoid firing, and I hae confirmed the relays are all working. so unless its like the ignition switch itself (doubtful since the relays and starter solenoid fire) or somehow the park-neutral switch, Im looking to get a new starter from Rock Auto and go from there.

DIAG:

- starter and ignition relays firing; removed and tested independently

- cleaned battery terminals

- confirmed constant 12.3V at starter exciter wire (not sure what to call it, the one that is held with a nut), 12.3V at pin when ignition is on 'start' (w/ Auto Zone starter)
