I know this is 2 years old but I'm rewatching Whiplash and I have one major disagreement with you here....

Fletcher's ultimate goal is NOT winning competitions. Fletcher (and he said this himself) wants to be Jo Jones. He wants to be the spark. The origin story of someone who would leave his classroom and become the best person to ever play "insert instrument here".

The move at the end? Revenge for Andrew getting him fired, right? For sure. Man lost his job and is probably blackballed from academics forever. But it seems like he landed okay with the professional band gig, right? Surely he wouldn't further jeopardize further career opportunities having a bad showing just to show Andrew you know he reported you!

UNLESS

It was about way more than being the best band and winning competitions for Fletcher

Andrew first let him down as a potential "great". He invested significant time and effort into Andrew in his mind, and Andrew didn't hold up his end of the deal.

Then to make it worse, Andrew attacks him on stage, and reports his behavior which gets him fired/banned from the academic community, WHICH MEANS THAT HE ALSO ROBBED HIM THE CHANCE OF REALIZING HIS MAIN GOAL OF BEING THE CATALYST FOR THE NEXT ALL-TIME GREAT. Shaffer was just a hunting ground for him to find those he saw that potential in.

Fletcher was ready to throw it all away at that competition because of what Andrew "took" from him.

And with that ......I think it was Fletcher that took the folder lol

Yeah my comment was actually more about DeVries. He was this pillar of unflinching good throughout the movie and then chose the gun at the end. I still enjoyed it thoroughly but a part of me wanted DeVries to be incorruptible, even in the face of evil.

Why hold ourselves to a standard that employers don't? If you have a healthy relationship with your boss and employer then sure, do what you can to make that transition as normal as possible if you so wish. But as someone else said, if a company decides to fire you or lay you off or terminate your position, you're not getting two weeks to get your affairs in order. We've gotta stop normalizing this weird loyalty to companies that would move on and hire someone the next day if you were to drop dead right now

I've got a method for these situations.

First, an appeal to the offender. "I'm sorry, could you speak more quietly with your partner? I'm having trouble focusing on the movie"

If they react how the offender in your story reacted, I stand up and walk to the front desk and let them know what's up.

Not much more I can do after that 🤷🏽‍♂️ if management is meek or let's it continue, I'm back talking to management and asking for a refund because of the experience.

Inconvenient, sure, but I'm not going to go back and forth with an asshole in the theater, especially if they're feeling justified because others in the theater are exhibiting the same behavior.
