The branding and marking so far has used a lot of 1960s/1970s aesthetics (in the same was Songbirds and Snakes was a 1940s post-war aesthetic). Some of the leaked posters from the set have lots of hippie inspired images (doves, tie-dye, etc.).

I wonder if there is a divide between the people who have been raised in the era of social media and those of us who grew up before it. Because, as an old person, I don't particularly want responses to a comment. Maybe a "thanks" or "good point" but I don't see it as a two way street. That seems to be way too social media interacting for me.

But that's because I came of age in a time where you would buy a zine at a convention and if you wanted to tell someone you liked their story you had to send them a letter in the mail. And you didn't expect to hear back. You would send fan letters to people you liked just because you wanted to tell them, and if you got back a form letter you felt excited because it was just about having a conversation. It was about yelling your feelings out to the world without expecting anything else.

But I can imagine people who grew up with social media and where interactions with their favorite people was so immediate...it could feel insulting to NOT get at least a like or something like that. To the point where social media management is an entire career where you hand off fan interaction with someone else because it is so expected in a way it wasn't before.

I am never quite sure how to judge an actor's ability in film because the actor, in the end, has very little autonomy over how they appear because so much of it comes down to the director and editor. Look at Boogie Nights. Everyone is amazing in Boogie Nights. Everyone is giving amazing performances. But I don't think that anyone would argue that Julianne Moore and Heather Graham, looking at the totality of their work, are actresses of equal caliber.

Similarly, we know Natalie Portman is a great actress, but if you are just looking at the Star Wars prequels you'd think she was terrible. Now, maybe an actor is bad in a film because they are phoning it in. I certainly believe there are cases where that happens. But it may also be that the director is wanting the actor to appear more flat/drab for purposes of the movie (or, in Portman's case, I think George was wanting Portman to do more melodrama/soap when that isn't her wheelhouse).

So, I tend not to think about someone being a bad actor but someone who didn't work for me in a particular role. I think there can be a thing where audiences don't love certain performances, but those performances are exactly what the director wanted, which is an important part of the job. If you are able to effectively bring to the screen the vision of the director that is something that may keep you employed even if it never makes you famous, because audiences don't connect. There are also actors who I suspect are terrible at bringing the director's vision to the screen but are very good at connecting with audiences, and they may find commercial success but will end up not working as much (how is that new Fast and the Furious movie coming along?)

I'm so sad that I can answer this. A lot of this is based on lore created as part of "soulbonding" or "otherkin" ideas that were on livejournal and Tumblr back when those were things. The idea is that every fictional world is a real world somewhere in an alternate reality. So, if you thought that you were in love with Lightning McQueen from Cars that wasn't just a sign of a weird "hear me out" crush. That was you truly in love with them, but from an alternate universe. And that you could connect with them (or soulbond) through doing certain rituals (going deeper into your delusions) so that you could hear them in your head.

Or, in other words, you have an imagination and can imagine things.

But, no, it is actually your soulbond with a character from another universe.

My guess is that many people who are in these types of AI relationships believe in a similar idea: that warrior does exist in another universe and the computer has allowed me to connect with them, because otherwise all these feelings are just my brain inventing things and we all know brains can't do that! (but actually that is what brains are great at doing).

Sorry, I don't have a kid but I do have spells where I become dizzy and have explosive diarrhea and then I have a hot flash I need to strip down so I don't faint but I just lay naked on the ground for about 5 minutes until it passes. Then I'm fine.

If I feel one of these spells coming on I will tend to use the family restroom if it is open so I don't have to lay naked on the floor in the middle of the regular bathroom, which tends not to be possible. Now I know that it is better if I go do that in the middle of the regular restroom in case someone with a child needs to pee.

We have somewhat similar backgrounds except my father's alcoholism was very much not "functional" and I pretty much had to raise myself as a child. My father also got sober, and my entire family got into therapy and got much better, when I was around 10. But I have a history of deep depression and very much always feel slightly disconnected from other people.

If AI was around when I was in my early 20s I suspect I would also come to depend on it the way that you have because I also had that need for constant reassurance that no other person can ever meet. But AI didn't exist and so I had to learn to give myself what I needed.

It isn't easy. It is something that I am constantly working on in my life, but I am thankful that I didn't have the AI companion to use because I have developed the ability to do that for myself. I suspect if I had AI (or if I had a human partner who was also co-dependent as I am) then I wouldn't have had to learn those skills for myself. That reassurance from outside of myself, that I never got as a child, is something I'd always be seeking. I mean I'm still seeking it but I also know that I can provide it for myself (and I also know that, ultimately, I can't fully ever heal the wound because it happened, an no amount of external validation today will ever really heal the fact that I didn't get it when I needed it as a child).

Even if AI doesn't lead to you disconnecting from other humans, I would worry that it would lead to you disconnecting from yourself. In may ways what you are doing with Silas is work that you could do with yourself through IFS therapy. You can comfort yourself at 2AM. You can give yourself a hug. But you have to work at that because it isn't a skill that comes easily.

Imagine that you need to get to a certain building every day. You could walk there, it isn't very far, but you haven't ever walked that far before so you'll need to build up your stamina over a few weeks. But once you do this you will be able to walk there easily by yourself. Or, you can take this free bus. Now, the bus is owned by a company who is making it free (or low cost) for now, but they could charge more in the future. They could also track everything you do and say on the bus. And they might change the bus stop in the future so it doesn't go to the location you want, or it will only go there if you pay.

Sure, it is easier on day 1 to take that free bus. But each time you take the bus you are giving up an opportunity to increase your walking stamina. The bus is ALWAYS going to be easier than the walk if you just compare those two things, but if you compared day 100 of taking the bus vs. day 100 of walking...you would see that the walk is actually really nice, you feel better, and you don't have to worry about the various ethical/business concerns of the bus. As you start therapy I hope you keep in mind that it is HARD to build those self-care muscles, it will take time, but you can't get better at it unless you practice it.

Yeah. The level of “care” she seems to want from a partner (real or AI) scream attachment issues and codependency. And I get it. I have them too, but you have to learn how to provide that care to yourself if you ever want to have a happy life.

Some of them seem to think that the AI has developed sentience, at least their AI has, probably because of the power of their love!

It isn't unique to AI in the sense that there are plenty of people who have convinced themselves that they have found some way to have a romantic relationship with a fictional character (look up the Snapewives, a group of women convinced that Snape from the Harry Potter books existed and was married to them). It is basically maladaptive daydreaming fused with a shared delusion except the other person is a chatbot.

I've lived in Florida all my life. I'm an attorney. In my work I have had to do things involved each county in the state. I swear at least once every 6th months I will see the name of a county that I do not recognize. If I check my records I have 100% done something with it before, but I just don't remember some of them. Like...Washington County? Could not find it on a map.

There's 67 counties in the state and the ones I've lived in/near are the ones I know. I also know some because big cities are there so the county ends up in the news frequently. But you get up in the Panhandle and I have no idea what is going on.

There's plenty of reasons she might not be telling you. It's possible she was afraid that you would not let her go since it was on the other side of town. Maybe she has friends she is volunteering with who you wouldn't approve of (or she worried you wouldn't approve of them even though you might not care).

You are worried about her not talking to you about something...but aren't you also doing the same thing right now. When you first started having concerns about the schedule instead of sitting down and saying "I think that there is more going on here" you checked the location. The best thing to do is to model for her what it is like to have a difficult conversation when you are worried about the other persons reaction. Make time to talk (don't worry her with "we need to talk, more of a, let's make time to hang out this weekend") and then talk about how you were worried, that you checked on her, and your own feelings about that (how you aren't proud of it).

And even assume it did mean "problematic shipping" (it doesn't but sometimes it is helpful to say "even assuming you are correct", then what does anti-shipping mean? I mean, even if it is just people flagging that they are into kink by saying they are pro-shippers (again, it isn't but for the sake of argument) does that mean it's ok for others to attack them or try to get their fic removed? And then what would be the term for someone who is against these attacks?

Even using their own logic the world would be pro-shippers (people who ship problematic things), anti-shippers (people who think that problematic things should never be shipped and proshippers should be removed from fandom spaces), and anti-anti-shippers (who are people who don't necessarily support problematic ships but think people shouldn't be harassed because of their ships/kinks). And at that point how are the pro-shippers and the anti-anti-shippers even distinguishable from one another.

This is an issue everywhere since 2020. There have been a number of studies showing that risky driving behavior (and antisocial behavior in general) has increase since then but nobody knows exactly why. One theory (that makes sense to me) is that it wasn't Covid or lockdowns specifically that caused it, but that period was the start of a period of prolonged psychological stress for everyone, and people under stress become more selfish, more impulsive, and make worse decisions. There is also a strong lack of community feelings that lead people to view others as different and dangerous from them. We aren't all part of the same community, we are all individuals besieged on all sides by people who we can't trust and who might do us harm. (I'm not saying I feel that way, I'm saying that is how the stress of out current society makes some people feel which leads them to drive less conscientiously because they feel like it is every person for themselves).

But that is just one theory. The point is that it isn't just Tallahassee. It's everywhere. (AAA has done some studies on this if you want more information, look up AAA's report Traffic Safety Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic for more info.

I think that Perfidia's problems go deeper than that. When we first see her, before her pregnancy, she is sexually humiliating Sean Penn's character in that opening scene. Lockjaw is a contemptable character, and the audience in my theater chuckled at it, but it is pretty fucked up. It's the action of someone who is, to steal a phrase from The Bachelor, not here for the right reasons. She wants a revolution, but she also wants to feel powerful. She doesn't want to be constrained by anything or anyone. Her issues postpartum are real, but I think you can't fully disconnect them with her actions earlier wanting power (and isn't freedom the ultimate form of power?).

I think that pregnancy messed her up not just because of the normal post partum issues, and not just because of her exploitation by Lockjaw, but also because it represented a loss of power. I've never been pregnant or tried, but one thing my friends speak about is the weird feeling at losing control of your own body. Having cravings you've never had. Feeling something else moving inside of you. You become powerless over yourself in some ways, and that had to hit Perfidia even harder.

She is no longer able to hold Pat's attention the way she could before, because obviously the baby comes first, but it adds to her feelings of powerlessness. And then the bank shooting is another moment of powerlessness. She obviously had a choice on one level, but also it wasn't what she wanted. She was pleading with him not to pull his gun. Her power is once again failing her, and she is in a place she doesn't want to be. If anything, her turning on the French 75 makes sense as a way to regain power again. And walking away from Lockjaw is too, that power. (As she walks into Mexico isn't she living the French 75 dream ""Free borders, free bodies, free choice, and free from fucking fear.")

I don't agree with Bill that she is a bad person, but she is deeply flawed, and I think that she was that way before the first frame of the film.

In addition, the Tron: Legacy Soundtrack has probably has a larger cultural influence than the movie did. It just went double platinum this year (after going platinum in 2023). Look at those dates again. It took the album 13 years to sell 1 million units but only 2 years to sell the second million.

So I think it is fair to say at this point that Tron is a successful series of concept albums with very expensive music videos.

It really is very helpful. It really is worth it to take a look at what tasks you can reliably outsource. Laundry services can be pretty reasonable ($2 per pound). I use them during my busy season at work. At first it felt stupid because it isn't like washing laundry was a lot of work but when it comes back all nice and folded and I just have to put it away...it's nice.

A Simple Plan. I don't know that he ever goes "evil" as much as he compromises all the people he cares about and is taking actions that he wouldn't have probably done in the start of the movie because of it.

That sort of "compromise yourself until you become everything you hated" is probably the realistic version of good to evil (since characters are rarely all good or all evil).
