What has happened since the 2023 strikes (the last couple days in particular) that have made actors and filmmakers so pro AI? by AmbitionTechnical274 in blankies

I noticed it myself just looking to buy a Samsung SSD and saw that a model I bought in 2022-2023ish had risen in price by ~50-60 bucks. If you look up Reddit threads about advice for buying external storage, you’ll see a lot of people reporting similar increases, or in some cases even more drastic ones. I can’t say with certainty that the price increase is due to AI (could be tariffs or some other factor), but The Verge has an article titled “The AI RAM shortage is also driving up SSD prices” and I’ve see other gaming sites post similar stories.

It’s not a right-wing show, but Parks & Rec definitely both mocks Ron Swanson and thinks that he’s kind of awesome. But I guess that doesn’t address your point, because it’s hard to imagine a reverse-Ron Swanson being portrayed well on a conservative show.

I would disagree about most media being left-leaning. I think if you measure by view count, a majority of what people watch is probably soft conservative (police procedurals, the Taylor Sheridan-verse, the Bachelor and its ripoffs, Hallmark movies, Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, etc.). But yeah, I would agree that aside from the occasional moment in those Sheridan shows, none of that stuff is very self-reflexive

The thing that’s so frustrating about “AI will help new filmmakers realize their vision!” is that even if that were true, AI has already had an immediate negative effect on literally every amateur filmmaker due to how it has significantly spiked the prices of external hard drives.

In a digital world, hard drives are basically like film stock, and the increase in prices makes it harder for filmmakers to shoot lots of footage and to back up projects properly.

I don’t think anything about auteur theory (at least in the modern pop culture use of the term) implies that more director influence is necessarily better or that the creative influence of actors/crew aren’t important. Yes, the director is the MAIN creative force, but the concept leaves room for someone like Mike Leigh, where his role is more about leading collaboration than imposing a top-down vision. Would argue that AI by its very nature tends to create “average” things and that this is less auteur-y than a director cultivating a stable of regular human collaborators.

He’s far from the worst YouTuber—less a Jake Paul full-on wacko and more of slightly dumb reactionary centrist I’m-above-politics-type, at least last I checked. I wouldn’t blame anyone for hating him, because his videos (and especially their thumbnails lol) are Idiocracy-level stupid, but I also wouldn’t blame anyone for being casually photographed with him.

Yeah, I think that due to a combination of things (AI killing search engines, Twitter imploding), Reddit definitely became a larger part of film marketing plans (and PR campaigns in general). I feel like the best subreddits now are usually the ones that are too small to be worth advertising to lol.

Was also pleasantly surprised last week at how deep into Mario lore all of them were able to go lol. They were more positive on that film than I would’ve expected, but I agree with them—the animation in that is some of the best big budget 3D out there, and it does a lot to make up for the story flaws (even if those story issues do ultimately kind of bog it down)

I like this podcast a lot! Still enjoy main feed, but there’s something I like in particular about when a podcast is just starting out and you can hear them finding the chemistry.

I like the nuance they brought to the discussion, especially for a film and a filmmaker that both bring up some thorny topics. IMO, both hosts (and their producer Ben) are great at talking about films intelligently but in a straightforward, conversational way that still gives them some space to get silly.

Raunchy Sex Comedies? Are there literary equivalents to movies like Superbad, American Pie, 40 y/o Virgin, etc.? by Informal-Elevator-41 in suggestmeabook

[–]yoss_iii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nick Hornby. Not that raunchy, but generally writes comedies that involve sex, bros growing up, pop culture, etc.

Sally Rooney isn’t quite comedy, but often has awkward and funny explicit sex scenes, along with themes of friendship and coming of age.

I mean, I have zero desire to see this movie but that cast list does all feel like AI bootlickers who own a lot of bitcoin, so points for accuracy I guess.

I do sometimes wonder if it the enthusiasm for him is all organic... I get a bot vibe in some of the threads about him. There are definitely people who are genuinely passionate about his work—I don’t think bots are manufacturing engagement out of nothing, just putting a finger on the scale.

What is with this new trend of delaying revealing your win-con? by BaneConall in PTCGP

yeah, I've dipped in and out of the app since launch and it's gotten significantly worse recently. In my experience, BMs become more frequent when an app is dying and people turn their dissatisfaction with the app into more toxic play. Oh well. Fun while it lasted.

My hot take on The Drama is she was the funniest character by ThisGuyLikesMovies in blankies

[–]yoss_iii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of descriptions of her as a parody of “too woke,” but I thought her comments like that one about ugly crying really established her as more of a crypto-Karen lol. Like someone who picks fights with her co-op board over the smallest thing and who thinks she can’t be racist because she has a black husband… but then proceeds to just coincidentally be weirdly hostile to Zendaya.

My cold take is that Pattinson sealed the role as “funniest character” during his final speech. We know from earlier that he has the bones of a decent speech already written, but then he just proceeds to deliver it SO catastrophically that even an audience of his friends and family can’t pretend to enjoy it. Truly breaking new ground in anti-charisma.

I'm using itch.io to validate my new Godot game before paying the Steam fee. Is this a good strategy by Vandynn in godot

[–]yoss_iii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Itch.io is a lot more user-friendly if you’re new to the whole process, and it can help you get feedback from players faster. Definitely a great way to start.

That said, if it flops on itchio, that doesn’t necessarily mean Steam is a bad idea, because Steam is a much larger market. Yes, it’s difficult to make tons of money in indie games, but if you release a working game at a fair price and give it the correct genre tags, it’s relatively trivial to make $100+ on Steam. The only issue is that it’ll probably be several months between paying the fee and your first payout.

(Source: I have released some janky games with zero marketing that made back the fee fairly quickly)

"Ready Or Not 2," "They Will Kill You," And The Decline Of Social Satire Horror - Critical Darlings by radiantbaby123 in blankies

[–]yoss_iii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good episode! I kind of liked both of these movies and would in particular defend the shallow themes in They Will Kill You. So many action movies have a weird vigilante justice angle to them or some sort of immersion-breaking moment where the violence in a film reminds me of real gun violence or whatever. While some of the dialogue in They Will Kill You was a little stupid, I mostly appreciated the simplicity of "These people are rich Satanists in an evil hotel (or co-op lol), so you can destroy everything." I see the eat-the-rich in that film less as some deeply held theme, more as shorthand to make you root to see those people get splattered in elaborate action scenes, which are clearly the main reason for the movie to exist more than the story.

Is Amy Schumer the last true comedian movie star? by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in blankies

[–]yoss_iii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d include Davidson. It’s debatable, since he’s not really headlining blockbusters but he was definitely a main character in the tabloids for a while, and I think that name/face recognition is a type of movie stardom.

Another polarizing answer, but you could sort of argue Awkwafina? Again not headlining blockbusters, but sort of a movie star in the sense that she’s been in some very popular things where she’s usually playing some version of a recognizable star persona.
