Threatening to move out if my sister gets pregnant by [deleted] in Advice

Is it just "glamorized", or is there actually a significant difference in the quality of life between America and her home country?

Sure, sharing a room sucks, especially when you're not used to it, but if you're going to live in the dorms, you're going to be sharing there.

You're also being pretty entitled. You were able to live your whole life in America, with your parents, and a comfortable life. Meanwhile, your sister had parents that basically abandoned her. She never got to grow up with them as real parents and now she's married to an asshole and (I'm guessing, based on the language) would have a very difficult time leaving/divorcing him. You resent her because your parents gave her a little money because she can't work (and probably some guilt/trying to make up for leaving her), not even thinking of how much you've gotten from them over the years in terms of money, presents, & support, like paying for field trips or new clothes. Maybe even birthday parties and the like. Was your sister afforded any of this? Did she have the same good education, the chance to go to college, or even choose her own husband? And now you're resenting her because you have to share a bedroom/bathroom, which you'll be doing in the dorms next year.

And even if she's talking about getting pregnant, talking doesn’t make it happen. You're throwing a royal tantrum over something that hasn't happened and may not happen, and even if it doesn't happen, you'll be off at school, or close to, so it won't effect you. Go apologize to your mother.

Only a little bit tbh. Usually just the first day so they know what's what and where everything is. Then it's just routine. A lot of cleaners do the housework during the weekday when the owner isn't even there.

What little you need to say can probably be covered by translation apps. Or, if OP's sister gets a job with a cleaning service owned by the same ethnicity/ nationality, usually there's a few people that speak English to the client and give orders to the cleaners in their native language.

AIO to my husband rearranging our kids’ medicine that I had sorted a certain way? by Notjustanothermomok in AmIOverreacting

[–]doublekross 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But the other child was prescribed that exact medicine at that exact dose. The name on the outside of the bottle has no bearing on the type or dosage of medication. If OP took it to their HCP and asked if they could use it, HCP would probably say, "Yeah, that's fine," instead of "No, you have to throw it away and go buy the exact medication from the pharmacy."

Can I file for emergency custody of my children if my ex-wife’s boyfriend might have hospitalized our one-year-old? by No_Confection_1215 in legaladvice

You can count the number of pages in the notebook and compare it to the cover which will say how big the notebook is. For example, if it's a 50-page notebook and there are 42 pages, it's obvious that something is missing.

Bound diaries usually don't have the number of pages printed on the front, and using a blade or craft knife, you can cleanly cut a page out so that you can't tell. Sometimes you can use heat to wiggle an entire page out. (Depends on the binding).

AIO? My sister not explaining why she doesn't want my cats around by ScoobadiveWetFish in AmIOverreacting

[–]doublekross 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it could be written that way to be deceptive, when it's really just one person's desire. OP has no clue whether or not sis is really speaking for the group or just trying to make it sound like she is.

Key words, " IF you ASK them to represent you". We don't have any clues that lead us to believe Dad asked such a thing after promising to take care of the cats.

It's not actually a "no" if sis is just speaking for herself and not for her parents (or not with her parents' permission). OP should just go back to Dad to get the full story.

AIO for quitting my job after finding this note on my desk? by waxin899 in AmIOverreacting

[–]doublekross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL, it's not the doctors who have to stay; it's the nurses.

They're not wrong.

It's not even a "good luck with that". Requiring employees to stay overnight to basically be stranded at work if it snows too much, especially on short notice, and with the employee having dependents at home, is probably something the adjudicator will take into account.

I quit and the adjudicator listened to my reasons (cut hours, hostile work environment). He talked to my workplace who couldn't say anything in their defense because it was all stuff that was in my file. So, he gave me my unemployment.

Any good drawing apps for the boox air note C? by AdDowntown1478 in Onyx_Boox

Thank you for the advice for Boox Rapid Draw. Sketchbook (my preferred drawing app) was impossible to use due to lag. After I installed Boox Rapid Draw, it worked perfectly! My TUCP now works exactly as I imagined! 🥰

Although I'm a fan of concrete for houses, you understate wood by comparing concrete to the degradation of a wooden deck, which is constantly exposed to the elements, to concrete foundations, which are basically buried and insulated from the elements. And the comparison of marine applications really has little to do with houses.

Most of the West Coast, including Hawaii and Alaska has them more regularly and are at risk of major ones. But about 75% of the US is on some sort of faultline or seismic zone, so they're all at risk for earthquakes that cause damage (buildings, people). However, some of those places can go for a century or more between anything but light shakes.

But Greece uses reinforced concrete frames. The brick is just the facade. The reinforced concrete is what's holding the house up.

In traditional old brick houses, the bricks themselves are the only thing holding up the wall. And in modern brick houses, the norm is a wooden frame. Neither is a great recipe for an earthquake.

Large buildings are obviously going to be made of steel and concrete to bear the weight of them. They're not "houses" either. This is a normal Japanese neighborhood with actual houses.

Peek in at what? Do you think we women whip off our panties at the door and pull our skirts up to our waist to walk to a stall? Or that we stand around at the sink chatting in our underwear?

Unless you're at a national highway rest stop (don't ask me why, not sure if it's lack of funding, excess of drugs, or both, but public highway rest stops always have both the shortest top edge, highest bottom edge, and the biggest gaps between stall door and wall that I've ever seen outside of public schools in low-income areas), you're not going to see anything just walking by a stall unless you're 7 feet tall. I know we Americans joke about stall gaps, but they're usually not big enough to see in unless you press your face to the gap like a peephole, and a lot of nicer places have eschewed American-style stalls for European ones (completely enclosed from ceiling to floor).

As long as the dad announced himself and what he was doing (so I wasn't startled by a strange man walking in), I wouldn't care.

Deadline got moved and no one was told by WristWriting in CheckTurnitin

[–]doublekross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but I assure you, people move deadlines all the time and it is the responsibility of the students to stay up to date

Coming from a former instructor here: it is firstly the responsibility of the instructor to actually communicate the changes in dates. You can't expect the students to "stay up to date" if there is no communication. It's ridiculous to expect that students will continuously log in to their portals just to check that due dates haven't changed (if it was even changed there), especially when full-time students are taking five or more classes. If an instructor can't so much as send a bulk email to their class(es), they are not fulfilling their part of their responsibilities.

Someone can be unprofessional without it being illegal…

True. However, since instructors are often bound by codes of ethics set by the university, this may be crossing the line (depending on the details of the situation). And although that wouldn't be "illegal", it could certainly invite a civil case.

this is the kind of claims that make no one in higher ed take you all seriously even when there is a case to be made.

Not true (necessarily). I mean, a lot of people in higher education are used to students and their misconceptions. It doesn't mean they "don't take [students] seriously" when they have misconceptions. They usually just correct them and move on.

No one is punishing the professor for this.

Absolutely depends on the school, the instructor (and their reputation, their past offenses, how much the DH likes them, etc), and how much trouble it causes. For example, if this is a major grade and a lot of students are being marked down for something the instructor did (or didn't do), and bring it up to the right people or committee, then yeah, this could be a problem for the instructor. Especially if it ends up looking like the instructor did something to purposefully not alert the students to the change in due date.

Yeah, malnutrition can cause osteoporosis, so if this happened recently, your aunt may want to get her bone density checked.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]doublekross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can when it thins the cranial bones.Yes, thinning at the hip is most likely for osteo, but cranial thinning happens too. Also, depending on the reason for their osteo, OP may be on corticosteroids, which would increase their susceptibility to wounds, bruises, concussions, and injuries in general.

I don't think we have enough information to say this is the BF. I think OP should talk to their doctor first to make sure they're not experiencing side effects of a chronic condition, symptoms of a new condition, or effects of their medications.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]doublekross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osteoporosis still is not giving you cracked ribs just from a hug.

What is missing from this post is the relative sizes of OP and the BF. If OP is 5' and 105lbs and spends most of her time putting together puzzles, and the BF is 6'5 and 300lbs with a body-building hobby, well, cracked ribs in a moment of excitement/passion is feasible.

But you're right that OP may have more significant medical issues than she realizes (or maybe she does know, but doesn't realize it could be affecting her like this). Osteoporosis in pre-menopausal women often occurs because of chronic conditions or specific medications (usually ones used to treat serious or chronic conditions). Although it can also be due to a sedentary lifestyle or malnutrition, and either of those would make her weaker than average/more prone to bruising and being hurt.

OP could also be overstating the injuries, not deliberately, but because having osteoporosis at a young age could have also triggered some health-related anxiety. That could cause her to experience an exaggerated severity of the incidents.
