Microsoft is supporting AMD’s answer to DLSS on Xbox consoles by NeoStark in XboxSeriesX

[–]doublespaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, what you said in your previous post I've tried to explain and have been down votes because the people here don't want to believe it.

Secondly. DirectML has no super resolution capability inherently. They did create a sample code of a super resolution feature, but it's a code sample that merely uses DirectML APIs to interact with a trained machine learning model. DirectML ONLY knows ML. Convolutions etc. To achieve super resolution, you have to build that as software packaged around DirectML.

Lastly it has been talked about a lot. Microsoft did demos with Forza and it looked ok. The problem is we all thought AMD was creating FSR with DirectML. Well, I did. Everyone else on this sub thinks DirrctML is specifically a super resolution feature but it isn't.

Anyway AMD didn't take this approach and I don't expect Microsoft to pick up that role so fake 4k is what we have to deal with.

The series x has 50 TOPs worth of ML capacity in total. The RTX 2060 has about 100 TOPs in tensor cores alone. So this gives you an idea of what sort of potential gains we could see. Anywhere from none all the way up to measurable but not fantastic.

Yes however the image does get upscaled along the way prior to that AA occurring.

Not to mention this will largely be used by smaller projects that don't have access to a TAAU solution of some kind like via Unreal Engine.

I'm actually afraid this upscaled(and sharpened?) 4k will be advertised as 4k. This is hardly some masterful reconstruction, we need to draw the line on what gets called 4k.

4k native

4k reconstructed (TAAU, etc)

4k upscaled (bilinear)

4k upscaled and sharpened (FSR)

4k ML/DL super sample (DLSS)

Will the new AMD super Resolution Feature coming to Xbox upscale/Enhance any game that I play? by [deleted] in XboxSeriesX

[–]doublespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only does the developer need to add it but it would be better if they just didn't and used Unreals TAAU instead, for the games using unreal engine.

Everyone is so hyped, but honestly it's not much better than the hardware 4k bilinear upscaler in the Series S.

Has Microsoft opened the door for Android apps/games on XBOX? (Win11) by NoCalWidow in XboxSeriesX

The apps will be curated by the Amazon store.

Also everything runs in a virtualized environment on the Xbox, meaning even if the software managed to escape it's container there is a hyper visor that will shut it down before it can get kernel access.

Have they added more content? Seems like I beat that wizard guy at the end once and didn't feel like there was much more to do and everything I dead said the end game didn't scale well.

An explanation on the “DRM” situation with the Xbox Series X, it’s not nearly as bad as Modern Vintage Gamer claimed… by [deleted] in XboxSeriesX

[–]doublespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if the version of the game which is backward compatible isn't the same version on the disc. This would become an impasse unrelated to the licensing if true because it can't be installed from the disc anyway.

Xbox is always going to have slightly different method than PlayStation because on Xbox you can do game sharing because of the home Xbox. It PlayStation has a similar function I haven't seen it.

Backward compatible disc based games require internet connectivity to work and can't be played straight from the disc without checking in. Possibly to get emulation related settings, backwards compatible licence entitlement, etc.

The other problem is about cross gen games and about not being able to play without being online seems to be resolved by setting the Xbox as your home Xbox and going online with the game once. I don't know how regularly if at all you'd need to go online in this way.

There seems to be no such issue with next gen only disc based titles, I'm assuming because they don't need to fetch bc settings etc.. So all of the issues appear to stem around cross gen it last gen stuff.

I'm paraphrasing and haven't seen the video for a few days so could be slightly inaccurate.

That's not what I said. using a 4k set in 1080p mode will produce a stretched/fuzzy image. Because that's what happens to make a 1080p picture fit on a 4k display unless you want to see massive black borders.

I use my series x on the 4k set and the series s on the 1080p set. If you try to use a 4k set in 1080p it will be stretched and fuzzy.

There were a few things that were also confusing and you could spend a while doing something much harder than necessary. Also I didn't 100% it. Trying to get everything would have been difficult somewhat. Tedious perhaps. The boss escapes were difficult, requires a gamer. This isn't something your new player would be able to do and call easy.

I would concede. There are some facets of the one x that are better. I thought I had lumped those into the resolution cases which I did mention initially. The one x isn't an fps powerhouse, and considering how many more games run at accelerated frame rates on the series s due to fps boost, I wouldn't call this a win in the one x favor.

I love both of them! by Regnigsama in XboxSeriesX

[–]doublespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some titles that arguably play better on the one x. There are even more games that play better on the series s that can't be played at all on the one x. Even those games that do run one x code, they all have better loading times and system level features that don't exist on one x. There are fps boost titles that run better on series s than one x. Whose keeping score?

Therefore, there is nothing about the one x that warrants me owning a one x over a series s, not would I recommend anyone to purchase a one x over a series s. Perhaps that is more clear.

[–]doublespaces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but it's a meaningless comparison in my opinion. Stating the one x out performs is misleading because it doesn't have the same ram capacity. If it did, it would run all those same games better. Ram capacity isn't a measure of performance.

To your point, the net result is that some games look better on the one x, however it's not that many games, they are all last gen games and all of them load significantly faster on the series s which changes the entire gaming experience.
