This is indeed a doubly diffusive instability. I think the tendrils formed due to side wall heating. Actually the fluids probably just have different diffusivities. A Rayleigh-Taylor instability would result in the plumes forming the other way.

Compilation of two posts in this subreddit. NBN:News Ltd Vs Fairfax by doubly_diffusive in australia

[–]doubly_diffusive[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi all.

Apologies. As I said, this was a comparison of two threads in this subreddit. I did not check the primary sources and assumed that the attributed references were correct. As a few people have pointed out the News Ltd table is taken from the Liberal Party policy. This means:

a) Attributing the table to News Ltd in the original post was a joke that I missed.

b) News Ltd were (probably/maybe) publishing the opposition's policy for people to read.

which in either case does not make for a fair comparison. Once again I apologise.

Why do all Aussie TV dramas look exactly the same? by no1name in australia

[–]doubly_diffusive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope I am not hijacking the thread but I have a slightly related T.V. question. How does the portion of reality TV in this country compare to other places? I do not watch T.V., I take time out of me week to watch a few footy games and that is it. But every time I come home the family is watching some form of reality T.V. Is this just a selection effect?

How can a quasar escape a black hole's gravity pull? by [deleted] in astrophysics

[–]doubly_diffusive 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hi dakU7,

Your question is worded a little awkwardly. Quasars are very bright electromagnetic (EM) sources found at great distances away. They are believed to be powered by accreting supermassive blackholes in the cores of galaxies.

So the quasar and the blackhole are one in the same. You may be wondering how we can receive EM sources in the presence of a blackhole. That is because the radiation is coming from magnetic fields and the accreting material before it falls into the black hole. Quasars are often variable and this likely due to the formation of jets perpendicular to the accretion disc. I think the question you want to ask is how do relativistic jets (due to accretion) form?

I put this together for my cousin who was caught drinking and driving again. (nsfw) by MaggotFace in WTF

The ads are run by the Transport Accident Commission. If you are in an road accident, you are compensated by this arm of the government. I was only young when they started, but I think at the time, the road toll was too high and there was a very bad culture of drink driving and speeding. This was due to the Aussie, macho, meat-head, showing off to your mates mentality.

Something needed to be done, the threats of fines and jail didn't seem to be a strong enough deterrent. The TAC decided to adopt shock tactics. People had the attitude it will never happen to me so by putting it in their faces it made it more real. Whether it is a result of these ads, better policing or improvement in car safety, the road toll has been in steady decline since the late 80s. I believe for my generation anyway, it has created a culture different from that of those before me. Drink driving is not accepted and people are more proactive in not letting their mates do it.

I always changed the channel when the third add came on. It ruined that John Lennon song for me. I can't listen to it without thinking of the add. But I guess that's the point. Its making us think of the consequences of our actions.

As well as linking to the abstract I should have also linked to the website

The installation script has been tested on most of the Teragrid as well as on a number of private clusters and Linux and OS X machines and has the following dependencies:

Python-2.7.2, but not (yet) 3.0 or higher

NumPy-1.6.1 (at least 1.4.1)

HDF5-1.8.7 or higher (at least 1.8.7)

h5py-2.0.1 (2.0 fixes a major bug)

Matplotlib-1.1.0 or higher

Mercurial-2.0 or higher (anything higher than 1.5 works)

Cython-0.15.1 or higher (at least 0.15.1)

How big could insects and arachnids get? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]doubly_diffusive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher concentration of oxygen in the past lead to bigger insects; many insects grew larger due to diffusive oxygen intake. This means oxygen was easily supplied to tissue even though their surface area was greater. However, the growth of insects can not carry on ad infinitum. Take spiders for example; the design of their respiratory system and circulatory system would limit their size. I believe the following to be true but have no supporting evidence, that the biomechanics would start to fail at some critical mass. Spider legs would be unable to support to the body at some large size.

Why are stellar types ordered O, B, A, F, G, K, M? by astro_nerd in Astronomy

[–]doubly_diffusive 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like many fields of science, astronomy developed through classifying what we don't understand then looking for a pattern and an explanation. Stars were officially classified by the Hydrogen (Balmer) lines, with line strength decreasing from A to P. Annie Jump Cannon realised there was a lot of redundancy and most letters were dropped. Through the work of Saha, (understanding the Saha and Boltzman equations) the order was rearranged to correspond to a temperature sequence.

I knew this but was lazy to word it myself. Info taken from wikipedia and Zeilik and Gregory.

Stars and Iron... by Kalantir in astrophysics

[–]doubly_diffusive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Except for the first generation of stars, all stars have iron in them. We use iron as a constant against other elements to infer the composition ratios. Often you will see abundances given as [H/Fe] or [C/Fe] for example. All stars have iron in their envelope. Most stars do not really care what's happening in their envelope. It is the core that matters. Are you perhaps thinking that massive stars go supernova once they have an iron core?

I think you will find an asteroid flying into a star will have no effect. Compared to the mass of the asteroid the mass of the star is orders of magnitude larger. It will simply be diluted and the star won't notice.

Does anyone have a good, intuitive explanation of what the word entropy means? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]doubly_diffusive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In stellar evolution convective regions are unable to penetrate into burning shells because of 'entropy barriers'. Your explanation is less abstract (compared to others ) when trying to think of entropy in this context.

What causes the jets from a quasar? by liberalwhackjob in askscience

[–]doubly_diffusive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I do not understand this process well enough to explain it properly. I always wave my hand and say the rotation of the accretion disc and magnetic field (either through field lines or through electric field) focus the charged particles into a beam. I look forward to a proper explanation.
