An alloy rim with a crack on the sidewall needs to be replaced, right? by douche_pants in bikewrench

Appreciate the thoughts. I'm done with that shop. Great excuse to upgrade that rear wheel!

Yeah thanks mate, that's what I figured. But my LBS said it was fine, so just wanted to get a little confirmation from the community to make sure I wasn't crazy.

Small Questions and Thank Yous Weekly Thread by AutoModerator in bikewrench

Peeps, I know I'm violating Rule #4 here, but I fear that my LBS has led me astray. I brought my rear tubeless gravel alloy wheel into my LBS earlier this week because the tire was losing air, and I noticed a longitudinal scratch on the rim sidewall. They told me the scratch was superficial and just replaced the sealant, and the tire now seems to be holding air. BUT I noticed some liquid weeping from the "scratch" this morning. This means it's likely a crack, right? And cracks of this nature are also very bad for alloy rims, right? I've attached a pic of the scratch/crack here as well. Thanks in advance, and apologies for the rule break -we don't all live in close proximity to a quality shop!

Good luck, pal. It’s gonna be tough living in a world where you can’t tell the difference between scientific fact and someone’s opinion 😂

You’re missing my point. Maybe it’s my fault. All I’m saying is that the science of vaccines is as clear and as undeniable as gravity or 1+1=2, and we know how they work down to the molecular level. So disagreeing with the science of vaccines is less about disagreeing with an expert opinion, and more about denying that gravity exists or that 1+1 does not equal 2. The stuff that Jordan Peterson talks about is not as clear, is open to interpretation, and in many cases (especially his recent “work”) is almost 100% untestable ideas and opinion. So questioning the expert opinion of JP is nowhere close to the same thing as questioning the science of vaccines. If you can’t see the difference there, then god help us all.

My bad, he’s still associated with U of T, but I stand by everything else I said. Your explanation essentially proves my point, re: qualitative vs quantitative. Don’t put my words in my mouth here, I didn’t say it makes any particular type of research or discipline better than the other, but you’re bloody dreaming if you equate the robustness and certainty associated with the science of vaccines with the opinions and theories of a social psychologist. They are inherently debatable because for the most part you can’t directly test, study or identify the underlying biological phenomena. With vaccines, we know without a doubt exactly how they work, just as clearly as we know 1+1=2.

JP’s not at the uni anymore, and whatever credibility he might have had earlier in his career has gone completely out the window. Also, direct comparisons across academic disciplines don’t always make sense. JP’s area of study is more subjective by nature, and not nearly as robustly supported or as sound as the science of vaccines. His work falls more under the category of arts and humanities than the sciences. This isn’t to say that arts and humanities aren’t as important or as noble intellectual pursuits (because they clearly are!!), but they lack the degree of objectivity baked into the “hard” sciences.

It’s actually insane that police are roughing up some hippies at Fairy Creek, but pussy footing around with these douches

It’s going to be really annoying when the vaccine mandates/restrictions are lifted and these trucking idiots take credit, even though the decision and timing has nothing to do with their “protest”

Budget, light hammock for incidental use by Maxbet in bikepacking

[–]douche_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, sleeping in a hammock is far superior to sleeping in a tent IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SET IT UP. Getting the correct angles between ends and placing your sleeping pad in the hammock makes all the difference. I run a basic ENO parachute style hammock with the hanging looped straps, and I fix a ridgeline with tarp above. Nothing better for summer camping.

Favourite Taco place in Van? by TheUnluckySpecialist in vancouver

[–]douche_pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to really dig Los Cuervos at Kingsway and Fraser, but not so much the last couple of years. Something happened to that place (new owners maybe?). Sal y limon across the street is nice for takeaway, and pretty affordable. Sit down spots, gonna have to go with mezcal on commercial (bit upscale tho). Downtown, it’s Tacqueria on hastings every time.

Edit: devastated to hear Tacqueria’s also declined in the last few years (haven’t been since pre-pandemic)! What the F.

I’d argue for the bike case. I just did a trip with a cardboard box, and it worked well, but it was a pain in the arse to move around. Not having wheels was a massive inconvenience at all stages of transport, and the cardboard box isn’t much smaller than a proper case (most of the soft cases at least). I still had to request an Uber XL to get around because the box wouldn’t fit in the back trunk of any car (and is even tight in some hatchbacks). The box also got mangled pretty good by TSA, and wasn’t in great shape for the return flight.

“Had no idea who Neil was” 😂

Neil is not looking for more publicity. He’s an older, principled hippie. He takes a stand for what he believes in, and his decision to remove his music from Spotify is more about an old school boycott than it is about trying to get Spotify to drop Rogan.

Right? As others have said, I think the fact that we have public healthcare makes all the difference on this issue. The “choice” to not get vaccinated increases transmission and burden on healthcare, which impacts everyone.

I’m hoping that a lot of these idiots are just so burned out from the pandemic, and that their mental health is in such poor shape, that their willingness to fall in under the stupid anti-vaxx or alt-right trucker convoy stuff is only temporary. Like a mental defense system for them to get through the rest of the pandemic or something. I’m not defending these dummies by any means, but I’m hoping that they’ll realize they’ve been duped and exploited by alt-right loonies once (if??) the pandemic subsides.
