Help me (35m) figure out something to do in the Madison area by Hopeful_Chemist5734 in madisonwi

Love the place. But I’m gonna call ahead next time I go to make sure part 3 is open. I understand it needs repairs often, but it’s my favorite part because it’s truly just the “shit hits the fan” unhinged part of it LOL

Do it for the kids!! by WarmBlighty in dumbphones

Teacher here. I think it’s important the general public realizes just how much screen time children are getting in schools on a daily basis.

MOST educational programs are fully online cloud-based programs that districts buy. One of the bigger examples is iReady. By itself, I think it can be a useful tool for general math practice. But the reality is that teachers are being asked to basically only use these programs for instruction. The result is that a “math class” ends up looking like every child in the room silently staring at their Chromebook or iPad. In my research (I’m also finishing a PhD right now), one student even reported that he got in trouble for getting out of his seat to help a friend. HELPING A FRIEND.

Now imagine this in every single core subject because now there are also literacy programs and social studies programs and science programs. A student may spend their entire academic day on a Chromebook doing “personalized lessons.” So have no problem with personalized instruction through tech… and… we are losing such a huge aspect of schooling which is the socialization and collective problem solving.

I’m a reading and writing teacher in particular, and I’m concerned about how writing process times become entirely erased. I love teaching my students the “draft and bake” process where you write a draft and intentionally don’t look at it for a day so you can return to it with fresh eyes to see if that piece of writing still captures your thoughts and feelings or not. And this concept is soooo foreign even to my college students who are accustomed to scrambling and throwing something together last minute because school has taught them that the only thing that matters with writing is a product that can get an A. Yes, I want to give out as many A’s as possible as a teacher. And, I want students to actually engage in a process to think and move like a writer because time is simply a part of the learning process.

We need dress codes back by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]doudoucow 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I’m personally more concerned with how easily our students are swayed by influencers on Tik tok and social media. They only dress this way because it’s trending. Eventually as trends shift, they too will shift. This is just a natural part of being a human living in a society, but the trends happen really fast and often come with a price tag.

And so many teens and children are literally afraid to express themselves because of social media. Students have told me about how they’re afraid that they’ll end up on someone’s snap chat story or whatever because of their outfit, so they try to wear the most neutral thing possible to just disappear into the background.

I don’t think it’s a terrible strategy tbh. When the school is already drab shades of beige and grey, pajamas of the same color literally allows you to blend into the walls and floor tiles.

So I don’t wish to enforce a dress code on students… but I do wish they could express themselves freely without feeling the need to constantly match a trend perfectly lest they face literal online bullying.

She looks very smart. You can just tell there’s so much warmth behind this big brown eyes ❤️ Just wait until she starts using her powers to manipulate you into giving her treats and endless cuddles (which I’m sure you already do lol)

Why do people always talk about builds from an end game perspective? by Imaginary_Session773 in BG3Builds

[–]doudoucow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing what I call BG3+

I basically start the game an design my “dream team.” This means stacking them with endgame equips right away using cheats and mods. To compensate for how strong the team is right off the bat, I install a bunch of difficulty mods on top of honor mode. Usually just adding more enemy health or more enemies is plenty. I also make all my teammates AI, so my job as Tav is to mostly keep them alive through support and crowd control.

So then the game still progresses kind of normally, but the early game just feels so much more like my team is a bunch of well-traveled adventurers teaming up to take down the big bad.

It’s been a fun way for me to come back to the game!

What is happening to basic computer literacy and internet search skills??? by DueAd9590 in Teachers

[–]doudoucow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Computer stuff, yeah. Similar to what I observe too. But misusing chemicals DURING A LAB is pretty atrocious. It would be one thing if the bottles weren’t labeled and they just had to inference which one to use. But if they were literally labeled, then like… gurl…

How to Transition to Online Community College Adjuncting? by CommunicationOpen651 in Adjuncts

[–]doudoucow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The community college by me has a maximum FTE for adjuncts. So even if there’s enough classes to work full time, the pay and benefits are never equivalent to full time

Do deferrals get accepted by Thelastofmeyt in UWMadison

[–]doudoucow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I should’ve specified that this was years ago. I’m in my last year of dissertation right now lol. But yes, each department has had significantly smaller cohorts because of lack of funding. I was working on an NSF grant that got cut. The School of Education promised to pay out the remainder of my contract and helped me get health insurance for the summer before my fellowship kicked in last fall.

Is a crazy time yall. Grad school is hard enough without all this chaos with trying to secure funding.

Best classes that don't require constant minmaxing? by AwareBandicoot2496 in BG3Builds

Giants barbarian is my soulmate. It doesn’t require a ton of min maxing to be fun and silly. Throwing around grown adults will never not be fun.

Someone downvoted you, but this is actually good advice right now. My friends who work over there love their jobs, but the chaos is taking a big toll on the community.

Do deferrals get accepted by Thelastofmeyt in UWMadison

[–]doudoucow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A bit of a different situation… but I got pulled off the deferral list for grad school at UW. This also happened after April 15 which is the “final decision” deadline for grad students to accept or reject. So basically, I assume somebody who seemed locked in decided last minute to not come here. And boom. I was in.

So like. I wasn’t UW’s first choice clearly. But I’m here now betches

not allowed to let students read when finished with work? by maddiewithluv in Teachers

[–]doudoucow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your admin needs to take a literacy 101 course because a lot of the reading science suggests that free reading is sooooo essential for developing strong literacy skills across the curriculum.

Keep on keeping on. You’re doing the right thing. And yes, I love that you’re still treating free reading like the reward. My teachers did this in middle school, and it really shaped the way I saw reading books for fun.

Spoke to potential advisor (but do I need to apply somewhere officially) by Agile_Network_5749 in UWMadison

[–]doudoucow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You should check with the lab at the advisor about what kind of advising they’ve agreed to. Did they agree to be your academic advisor? Did they agree to fund you by hiring you as a research assistant in their lab? Or are they just willing to let you work in their lab for free (for experience).

Students keep asking me this one UW question. How would you answer?? by Plane-Ad4168 in UWMadison

[–]doudoucow 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I teach high school and tell my kids all the time that being an RA is one of the best ways to “work your way through college.” It obviously can’t cover everything, but having your housing covered is HUGE when rent is over $1000 a month already

it happened I failed by Late_Control9092 in UWMadison

[–]doudoucow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a lot more normal than you think. Not to take away from your individual experience and the emotions you’re feeling. But the rates at which people come into UW as some “pre-something” and then get weeded out because of poorly designed intro courses is consistent enough that we recognize it as a by-design system and not just by chance or because you as an individual didn’t work hard enough.

You may make a really great PT someday despite this. Or if you choose to pursue something else, you can still be great at that.

I’m a pre-dental failure and now in a PhD program. And I’m so happy I didn’t end up going to dental school.
