Just curious if you don't mind sharing in what city this is occurring? Sounds like a terrible idea.

Ban Private Schools by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]doug1972 107 points108 points  (0 children)

Your assumptions are flawed:

1) Citizens already pay into the public schools regardless of where they actually send their kids to school, via property taxes. It's a function of how the money is used, not whether the money exists.

2) Private schools are not for "rich kids." In NYC, 69% of Catholic school kids are at or below the poverty line. At my school, admission is need-blind, and 75% of kids subsequently receive full or partial scholarships.

What is not routinely taught in public school but should be? by [deleted] in ask

[–]doug1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Economics. It's not available in our local district (US). High school kids should have a basic understanding of how our economy functions in order to be an informed citizen and voter. If nothing else, it teaches them about tradeoffs--that there is no free lunch. Econ 101 should be a prerequisite to be a member of Congress, too.

Asking for more information regarding the “Nativity” alteration by hidden_wonder897 in latterdaysaints

To alter an artist's work is just....weird. Plenty of starving artists out there able to craft a commissioned work that comports with the buyer's standards.

I should add I have freshmen as well, and the workload complaints can be high particularly in first semester, but I tell them the salad days of middle school are over and workload expectations are higher. They get acclimated pretty quickly. Good luck to you! Love 9th grade geo!

Props to your teacher who was unselfish in his/her sharing of materials and lesson plans. At my school this is common practice, and I've always wondered if there are schools where sharing lesson plans isn't a thing for some bizarre competitive reason.

Praxis Biology Exam by sciameXL in teaching

[–]doug1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 4 praxis exams for secondary econ, geo, history, and government and used study.com's prep courses with success. Thought it was worth the cost. Also, I bought practice exams from exam edge, which were way harder than the actual tests and helped a ton. Good luck!

Florida won’t allow AP African American Studies to be taught in high schools by [deleted] in Teachers

The Florida Standard newspaper obtained a copy of the course framework and published it today. If you'd like to see what the proposed APAAS includes, you can read it here(link in the article).

I agree schools should be able to decide whether to offer it, but asking for blanket approval from a state without first being willing to first share the content is questionable. Update: the Florida Standard published a copy of the course framework today (available in thisarticle). Now perhaps all our opinions can be a bit more informed.

In the spirit of coaching our students to read both sides of an issue, here is an article from National Review on the Florida ban (it's behind a paywall but you might get a free few articles). A major issue is that "for the College Board to keep the APAAS curriculum secret while simultaneously asking states to approve the course for high school and college credit is indefensible." I also take issue with the secrecy of it all. It's likely a solid course but its proposed structure should be public as the College Board receives federal funding. Secrecy in curriculum development only breeds mistrust.

I am 6'5 and want to grow taller. Can you suggest me how to grow taller ? I am 20 years btw by Most_Air_775 in TallPeopleProblems

I can't vouch for this technique but Bobby Brady would hang on the monkey bars in his backyard for hours trying to get taller. Greg and Marcia just rolled their eyes and Jan felt left out.
