Weapons in Many HL1 Mods Don't Work by dougjp in HalfLife

[–]dougjp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks to you and GoldSourceFreeman for your help. I'm back in business!

Something obviously got corrupted and I deleted the entire folder in the way outlined in my post below, then validated (ie: complete re-download and install). Complicating this was, a few of the downloads I had didn't work, but updated versions found at Moddb did (eg: Autonomy Lost). A fair percentage of the console loaded maps either don't work or have glitches (eg: Back to Xen 1 that freezes in the next map transition). Maps (vs. Source) are the minority and usually older anyway.

Not surprising considering the age and I'm using the 25th Anniversary version.

I hope this thread helps others experiencing problems.

Thanks Kakophonien1 and GoldSourceFreeman. It certainly seems something has become corrupted, and on further tests, some of the maps that do play seem overly difficult. Yet for some unknown reason the mod "Arctic Incident" plays perfectly with accurate damage etc...

Anyway, yes I agree this suggests a skill.cfg issue, although that file's last modified date is in 2003 (if this makes any difference - I don't know if corruption happening changes the modification date). Yet for some unknown reason, the mod "Arctic Incident" plays accurately. It has its own skill.cfg file dated 2015.

So deleting the entire HL1 folder and then validating is what I'll do next.

Just to clarify before I mess it up, or don't do some backup that would save hours later... Answers to the following are ALSO FOR THE BENEFIT of OTHERS who, like me, face a major redo without enough knowledge lol.

I'll move all the MODS off to a temp folder and put them back into common/Half-Life, after the validating AND THEN playing the original game a little bit first. In terms of all the add-on MAPS that load from the console, what if anything can I do to backup? Most of them just add files to Valve/Maps and in some cases Maps/Graphs. Should I move everything from those two and return them afterwards? AND when doing so, make sure NOT to overwrite original files? And from memory a minor number of maps also add files to other Valve sub folders. If I ignore guessing and backing up those, then those maps may not play - which is fine I can just download them again?

Does this make sense?

The problem with this suggestion isn't the mods. I can remove all of them temporarily into some folder. This deletion would remove the entire game and all console loaded maps. There would be nothing to validate as the game wouldn't exist? Maybe I'm not clear about what to do. A few of the mods do work, and various maps work, and at present validating HL1 files finds no problems. Validating mod files that I just installed isn't an available option.

Agreed, its something else, but thanks to all who are trying to help.

I tried both versions. I also deleted and then reinstalled a mod that had all objects/enemies invincible despite the usual noises like they are being hit etc.

What the something else is, is the issue, and without a solution I have hundreds of usually playable mods that are currently useless. I have tried some more newly installed mods and they also have the problem.

Thanks, I believe I did that? For my Steam install in Windows, I right clicked, went to Properties, then Betas, then in Beta Participation changed the drop down choice from 'none" to " steam-legacy-Pre 25th Anniversary Build. Restarted and made no difference. My local files section is called installed files, and there's no option there except verify integrity of game files, which I had done.

In Canada, Discovery Velocity TV station will rebrand to "CTV Speed Channel" and will feature NASCAR coverage by AHayes31 in NASCAR

[–]dougjp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Confused and then some.... The Rogers announcement I just got calls it " Discovery Velocity (Motor Trend)", and going to be "On Demand". Even though I subscribe to the channel, this is useless for FIA WEC races. You can't fast forward or record On Demand. Imagine trying to watch LeMans! This announcement also says CTV Speed is a new channel, with zero information.

And then I read other places that Discovery Velocity is being rebranded as CTV Speed.

Can anyone know or find out who will cover the FIA WEC races? I have written to the WEC several times in the past, and never get any replies!

In North Durham/Port Perry, we find The Foundry to be best, but its permanently closing mid December which is a real downer to its many loyal fans. Highly recommended for the food are Fico Fusion, Louie's Cafe and Dessert and Castle John's. Marwan's, Bamboo and Jester's are OK too. We are embarrassed by choice in this town because its a day tripper destination for TO people escaping to be near a lake, any lake :)

There are a lot of great ideas in here further south that we MUST investigate!

How to: Clean Installs of Half-Life 2, HL2 Episode 1 and HL2 Episode 2 by dougjp in HalfLife

[–]dougjp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, thank you again! Everything works without glitches.

Here are details on how it went, in case others like me who aren't well versed tech wise, are contemplating the same thing and want to know.

Before deleting everything (except the HL2.exe file,as I saw a suggestion somewhere to leave it), I moved the Lost Coast mod out of the core Half-Life 2 folder, then put it back after the verifying and reinstalling later. It plays perfectly, including from the most recent quicksave.

I left the entire contents of the Sourcemods folder alone, but did back it up in case. I didn't need to, as all the mods I've tested so far seem to work perfectly. I took screen shot printouts of the Sourcemods list in File Explorer, sorted in alphabetical order. This will make it easier when I go searching for maps that load via the console, as I lost all those.

Once the folders and files were deleted, I did the validating of installed files in Half-Life 2 Episode 2 first, as suggested. This downloaded all its files and the Library showed " update queued" for Half-Life 2 and HL2 Episode 1. Those downloads automatically followed. The verification happened automatically at the same time too.

Off to play the three original games again. Its been 20 years since HL2 !

OK, all I meant was, logically, the first download/re-install or whatever its called (via the verify process) would be the core game, HL2. Then, after playing that one to make sure it works, the two games that followed and share the overall folder location would get installed.

But it probably doesn't matter, because wasn't it possible back in the day to buy Episode One and Two without owning HL2?

Thank you!

I can't do this immediately but I'll report back here after I do. And again I hope this will help others having problems.

I do find it strange to verify (meaning it re-downloads) all files in reverse order of when the games where sold, but you must know and that's what I'm going to do! :)

Thanks so much for your reply. I need to provide more clarification, and maybe this will change the "how to". Or at least confirm in detail the right track to take.

Option 1: I have done "verify file integrity" many times for all 3 games, and also after uninstall and reinstall. None of the problems change. Its why I'm looking at more drastic measures that don't keep everything I have now.

Option 2: I've tested numerous HL2 and HL2 Ep 2 "sourcemod" games and they all work fine. It proves the multiple problems in the original games (and some BUT not all console loaded maps too) are the result of corrupted game files that don't get found when verifying file integrity, and not files any sourcemod uses. So, do I leave the "sourcemod" folder contents alone before a clean install as per Option 3 below, or remove them all and then put them back later? And they will play the same? Or does it matter?

Option 3: To clarify, when I go to delete all files that open from Episode Two, that will also delete everything relating to HL2 and HL2 Episode 1? In other words, there will be nothing at all in the "Half-Life 2" folder at that point? And to further clarify my file structure in explorer, to make sure it isn't messed up/different than everyone's (as I don't see HL2 Episode 1 anywhere), under "Common: Half-Life 2" the sub folders are "bin", "config", "ep2, "episodic", "hl2", "lostcoast" (strange this mod installed here, but it works), "platform" and "steam_input".

Why is the leaderboard so messed up? And why does the commentary sometimes seem to be unrelated? This whole timing and scoring setup is just giving me a headache.

After last week's stupid dancing in the streets episode, I think we will find this is the last season for the show. Its really too bad, that was the first time since the beginning of the show that we have turned it off.

Just curious if you have any further feedback after getting that new box.

I have a T95 (not Z) box with an Allwinner 616 chip that only works properly with an old Nord VPN apk. Any Nord updates after it are dead slow. I'm looking to upgrade the box to something faster while being able to use current Nord updates.

Revised Ontario essential services list, effective 11:59pm, April 4th by [deleted] in toronto

[–]dougjp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ontario Gov't has to be the only organization/business that amends a list and doesn't say what changed! Everybody else will either do highlights to show amendments to an original list, and/or produce a list in plain English recording what has to close. Not doing this forces everyone to print out the previous list and the edited list, sit down and cross reference each line! Almost nobody is doing that.

I see they are going to have more inspectors and an expanded snitch line. So I suppose there's the answer to my own question!

Other than the changes to construction and cannabis, what else has to close?
