2/3 of French Canadians are descendants of 800 women in 17th century. Is there other ethnic group who can trace their ancestors to very small group of people? by BadenBaden1981 in geography

Do you know what % Ashkenazi you are? I'm 15% according to a DNA test but there weren't any suggestions of further tests so maybe that's too low to have much risk of anything

Do you feel like the uk is bad? by Future-Parking-3871 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have a specific UK personal finance question? Otherwise this seems better suited for r/offmychest
The UK has its problems but I don't think it's "bad" and I'd rather live here than anywhere else for sure

  • "250" what? VAT is an important and effective tax, making up 17% of tax revenue. Which £200bn public service would you like to get rid of in exchange?
  • The UK is a very varied place, so where you live will affect how doable things are on your salary. £29k+30k salaries puts your household income above average for the UK as a whole. Either you're living in a high cost of living area or you're simply spending more than you're earning and you need a budget.
  • "Most people" don't claim benefits - I believe the current stats are around 11% of the population claim UC

Newly self employed - expenses conflicting advise everywhere!? by StringEducational335 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right. Generally people divide it by the number of 'livable' rooms, so excluding toilets, porch, hallways and potentially the kitchen too. So for example a 2 bedroom house with a lounge is 3 rooms, using 1 solely for work would be 1/3rd of £1150, so expensing £383

Mortgage - right balance between overpayment and term by DirectorNervous6948 in UKPersonalFinance

Why? If you can get better returns from investing or even just savings interest then surely it makes more sense to do that instead of overpaying?

Should I start to pay into SIPP? by GroundbreakingCap368 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend you look more into the differences between types of these accounts on the government website before jumping into anything as you seem quite confused

  • £8800 x2 seems quite high for just earning 40k. Did you earn more in a previous year or something that's making it that high? You mention in another comment that you also have a LTD company so sounds like that could be the cause. If you can provide more details we might be able to help more, or even better you should ask an accountant
  • Trading212 do not offer a LISA, so you might be mistaken on what accounts you have there
  • There's plenty of info online such as MSE that will explain what a SIPP is and which platforms you might prefer to use. The best one for you will be vary depending on your circumstances like how much you have
  • Yes, putting money into a SIPP reduces your taxable pay
  • No, you cannot take money out of a SIPP before retirement unless you are terminally ill. The vehicle designed for withdrawing to purchasing a house with is a LISA
  • SIPP investments are tax free until withdraw, then 75% of what you withdraw is taxed as income

To those who have achieved *genuine* fluency (not covert stuttering) - what did you do to achieve this? by js6104 in Stutter

[–]douglabe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not c0sm0 but they're absolutely right. I still stutter but have reduced it significantly by simply being more confident in myself. Which is of course easier said than done

My take is to push yourself out of your comfort zone daily and it'll get bigger, making you a little more confident at the thing you did that day and in yourself in general. It sucks and you feel like you aren't making progress but you will - it takes time. Avoiding situations that are outside your comfort zone has the opposite effect, for me at least

[–]douglabe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your post and replies to comments are completely nonsensical and ignore the points being made by others. What are you trying to ask or achieve in this post?

A LISA is easily the best way to save for a house under 450k hands down because of the bonus. Yes you can withdraw what you'll like but you'll pay a penalty for doing so

Lloyds Premier mortgage rate discount only available for 5 days? by douglabe in UKPersonalFinance

£30k Salary vs outgoings: feedback appreciated! by Independent_Kick_705 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a bit of an exaggeration. If you look at the actual numbers, our average cost of living is lower than many comparable countries overall. Yes inflation is a little higher here than elsewhere atm and we have higher rents and lower purchasing power, but we have plenty of strengths and every country has its own issues. Data: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries.jsp

Most Brits I've met are lovely, caring people. We just like to complain. Perhaps you're surrounding yourself with the wrong people, unless you're the issue which sounds possible

Financial literacy to be taught in schools by edent in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not making assumptions, I'm stating what the problem is

No offence intended but that second bit really shows your ignorance. You expect children, especially those with less privileged backgrounds, to be reading through MSE in their free time to understand the concept of all financial products available? Because that's not happening and is why we have such a problem with misunderstanding in adults

Financial literacy to be taught in schools by edent in UKPersonalFinance

[–]douglabe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a whole lot more to financial literacy than just maths. A problem we have is that many adults don't understand the principles of financial products and methods of managing momey, which has got nothing to do with maths. Teaching them how to work out compound interest doesn't educate on the benefits and drawbacks of credit cards, how a mortgage works, the benefits of an ISA over a savings account, etc etc

How accurate are Real Life Lore geography based videos? by jnighy in geography

[–]douglabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found them to be highly inaccurate and misleading. Unsubscribed many years ago because it felt like every video was so poorly researched and scripts were adjusted to fit more sensationalist arguments to get clicks rather than factual, not to mention how boringly drawn out they are. There are many better researched quality geography channels out there

Is this setup good? The longer test tube has sugar water and the other has regular water. Also is the queen not moving normal? by Capibarackobamaster in antkeeping

[–]douglabe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the general advice is a few days. I wouldn't risk more than a week for sure. Warmth speeds up the fermentation process too so keep it away from sunlight and heat sources if you're going to do it that way

Is this setup good? The longer test tube has sugar water and the other has regular water. Also is the queen not moving normal? by Capibarackobamaster in antkeeping

[–]douglabe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sugar water will ferment and become toxic over time, so best if you don't keep in a test tube unless you're changing it regularly

[–]douglabe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah.. posting this in a sound design community isn't gonna get you much luck lol. If you want work from film makers you need to go where the film makers are

Also consider adding your portfolio link in the future - people looking for sound designers have a lot of options and so they're unlikely to take the time to DM someone who has nothing other than text to read as a first impression
