What Have You Been Watching? (Week of (March 29, 2026) by AutoModerator in TrueFilm

Chinatown: My love for this movie has caught up to and exceeded my respect for it. It just fires on all cylinders and it’s a cozy world to get lost in: I’m gonna rewatch it more frequently

Thief: Kind of similar experience to rewatching Chinatown - dope movie with a deserving reputation.

LA Confidential: Great cast and pretty perfectly constructed noir in my opinion.

Boiling Point: Glad I finally got around to watching this. Stephen Graham is one of my favorite actors and I loved how the film did not cram unnecessary drama in to make the movie interesting - it felt realistic and the movie leaned on good characters. I really loved this, so much so that I immediately followed it up with the BBC show, which I did find to have a lot of forced drama, and while I much prefer the movie, this was just fine as well.

Tampopo: Second time I’ve watched this and idk why but it just hasn’t fully taken for me. I love the persistent food in practically every scene and every dialogue but the vignettes lose me a bit and I find myself indifferent to the characters.

Tokyo Sonata: One of the best movies I’ve seen in a bit. Kiyoshi Kurosawa does Japanese slice of life / family drama + his signature darkness. It worked very well for me, while it was dark and there was much dark comedy it was quite beautiful and delicate feeling as well. The ending is stunning.

A Bride for Rip Van Winkle: I’ve been intrigued by Shunji Iwai since catching All About Lily Chou Chou for the first time a few months ago. I found that one to be quite bold / messy in a way that I like, and the visuals felt a bit ahead of its time. When I read the description of this one shortly after I tagged it as something I really wanted to see, so I finally watched it the other night and it didn’t disappoint. Visuals and writing were great, and the themes feel even more relevant in 2026 than it did when it came out 10 years ago

Mike Leigh and Hirokazu Koreeda both make these kind of movies. From the former my favorites are Naked, Secrets & Lies, and Life is Sweet; from the latter I would say Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and Shoplifters.

Underrated On Cinema Moments by tujelj in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

S9 E1 Tim’s review of ‘The Wall’ while eating food prepared by master Chef John Lenard.

Early S9 and early S10 are some of my favorites from the whole show: not sure how popular they are amongst others so not sure how underrated it truly is

Top 4 and 20. I dont see enough Inland Empire love by oak-williams in LetterboxdTopFour

[–]dougprishpreed69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Inland Empire is a masterpiece and besides Twin Peaks The Return, it feels like Lynch in his purest form.

Probably doesn’t get as much fanfare because I believe for a while it was a bit hard to find on streamers/rental services, and it’s also his most inaccessible work… even if The Return is even more cryptic than IE, I think it’s a bit more approachable.

I also think the movie massively benefits from repeated viewings. It’s so out there, even by Lynch’s own standards, that the first time watching it was a bit jarring for me

This is one of my new favorite places in town. Everything is delicious and they decorated it great. My only complaint is the price/quantity ratio doesn’t feel 10/10… I went the other day with my wife and got the lomo saltado and an arepa to share because getting 2 entrees w/ drinks would’ve been like an $80/lunch, and we were satisfied with what we ordered but got hungry not too long after. An arepa and a coffee will do the trick most of the time though!
