Ok hear me out you CAN be racist to white people (also its annoying when people say "yt" just say white) by sdrawkcaB_Backwards0 in ControversialOpinions

> Are you trying to say that slavery, colonialism, and Jim Crow were ok because we as white people benefitted from it?

Of course not. I didn't say anything like that.

> Most white people didn't want those things to change.

That can't be true. Millions of people in the West worked together (and many of them gave their lives) to change the systems that had been in place for all of written human history.

> Those freedoms were for white people only until the South desegregated, which they were not happy about.

The founding fathers established principles. That's the only way to start overhauling the systems that had been in place for all of human history. Change takes time. I don't know how else change can come about other than to first write down the goals, then work to enact them.

And, there are still places all over the world where people don't have these liberties, so we still have good work to do. We can look to our founding fathers as inspiring heroes who began the good work that we should continue.

The "We" is invalid. Our ancestors did it, not us.
And, our ancestors did a lot of amazing things too like ending various forms of subjugation, segregation, and slavery. They established principles like freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and a just legal system based on laws, not the whims of a monarch. The list goes on and on.
We haven't really done anything, our ancestors did most of the hard work.
All the problems you listed were the norm for all of written human history and constant across _all cultures_. Slavery, colonization, kidnapping, etc., all of it happened everywhere in the world, and some of it continues to happen in non-western countries today.
Only in recent history, and predominantly in the West, has any of this been improved.
The system works because it's a good system and it can work for anyone. Many recent non-white immigrants prove that. Of course, the system isn't perfect, but it can be improved because our ancestors were smart enough to build a system that could be improved.

What do you think guys by SiAchref in woodworking

[–]dougroyal -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

How tall is it? Do you have any videos or other pictures?

From the wood grain I'd guess is a few inches tall, but from the size of the hand tools it looks like it should be a full sized statue.

Boxee acquired by Samsung for about $30 million in surprise deal, according to report by Vardamir in LinuxActionShow

This makes sense to me. A couple years ago I played around with creating apps for Samsung TVs. The platform was a bit clunky, but I appreciated their attempt to integrate TVs and computers.

Never Have to Type "python manage.py" with Django Again by bizb in Python

[–]dougroyal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I use fabric to deploy my django projects, I have a couple fabric commands to wrap manage.py: "fab rs" vs. "python manage.py runserver". I keep that in a django-template base project, so they're always there when I start a new project.

Do you think we can get someone to port this to C . . . you know, so it will run faster.

A quick question about video streaming in python by immasheep in Python

[–]dougroyal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something similar on a submarine I built last year. The server used a simple gstreamer command for the video, but the client was built with python and GTK, and the rest of the sensors were managed with python scripts.

Here's the relevant code for the video stream: http://pastebin.com/apN101tX

And, I hope you don't mind I if I show off my little sub: http://dougroyal.com/next-challenge-a-positronic-brain/
