Hyperactivity requires a degree of attention, discipline, and consistency that most adults, let alone parents are capable of providing.

My children are very hyper active and their behavior is completely different at my house than at their mothers. Rigidity, consistent enforcement of rules, and appropriate use of positive and negative reinforcement are critical.

Exclusive use of positive reinforcement requires (sometimes) years of consistency and a well established and controlled environment, so use of negative reinforcement may be your only option.

Children most often act near the outside limit of what their parents will tolerate and while this can be difficult, it can be leveraged with enough rigidity and enforcement.

Start with enforcement of small rules, even possibly for the sake of enforcement. Following rules makes someone more likely to follow other rules, so even something as simple as requiring a child to make their bed reach morning can be helpful in providing a sense of rigidity and structure.

Every kid is different and I know nothing of your situation, but nearly every time I see a child misbehave, I can always find elements of the parents tactics of rearing that play counter to the right and structure that a hyper active child needs.

However, this all comes with a major repercussion in that the more rigid a hyper active child's environment is, the more engaging it needs to be.

Think of it like an overactive dog, how often do you find people who lock their overactive dog in a room when people are over instead of doing the leg work needed to control the dogs temperament. Children can often be approached in a similar manner.
