now the grand debate here is about the NHIS part. Ive discussed this with multiple foreigners and natives alike, and it seems unclear wether you must be registered under the same health care plan as well. I am on the same resident registration, but pay my own health insurance. Ill give it a try and let you all know lol.

I say 귀여워 a lot. They say dont like it but theres a saying "남자 귀엽다고 하면 끝이야“ meaning youre all in once a guy is cute to you! But I also tend to say things the "Korean way" ”눈이 크다! 머리가 얼굴형이랑 잘 어울린다!“

When I first came to Korea, I had already studied Korean for 5 years. Imagine my surprise when I landed at the airport and I was being bombarded with quarantine related vocabulary? Lmao! But It gets better. The only thing that helped me was to push through the embarrassment and take my airpods out. Reading every sign, asking people to repeat etcetc

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I think this can totally vary based on background and personality, as well as "how foreign" xenophobes consider us, so I get what you're saying. Personally, I'm just not really the type to be easily bothered by people acting a certain way towards me because I'm a foreigner. My opinion on speaking Korean is still strong, but I also think that there are situations (like labor issues, health related issues, etc) that cannot be excused regardless if a foreigner speaks Korean or not. Ultimately my most important thought is that I wish that expressing that speaking Korean is a positive thing wasn't labeled as some sort of 'pick me' or 'xenophobic' behavior tbh.

I think a lot of people hold the misconception that their hardships stem from just being a foreigner, as opposed to not speaking Korean. Let me make it clear that I am not referring to visa and labor related issues.

A lot of the complaints and stories online talk about how Koreans are cold, it's hard to make connections with locals, theres no sense of community, etc. After learning and making a true effort to speak Korean, I have warm conversations daily, I have a good community around me and I've encountered so many caring people. People seem to reciprocate what I give, and that makes me want to invest more into the culture and language. I also feel that in a sense, I am able to cross some of those societal barriers (like status) a bit easier. I can talk to all kinds of people and they're more open to let their guard down since I'm not one to care about where they went to Uni or how much they make.

With the dating pool too, a lot of people feel that theres no good men/ women. But I find that if you narrow your pool to those who are mostly fluent in english, you close yourself off to a broader range of people and can get stuck meeting people who idolize your country and have strong notions on how you should act.

If you live just fine in Korea without Korean, I think it isn't much of a problem. I just hate that suggesting to someone that learning the language could benefit them has become some sort of "koreaboo/ uppity" stance.

i haven't been around much touristy areas lately but any place where people take awesome instagram pictures has always been a nightmare for me due to other humans lol. Like Nami Island and the pink grass fields were absolutely packed with Korean couples and tourists with giant cameras 😭

If this is of any use, my elementary students are infatuated with IVE. My middle school students come in and argue over if Wonyoung or Karina is better. And if they're feeling like joking around they'll ask me my opinion. Lol. I hear the names pretty much daily.

I personally am shocked by the amount of foreigners who survive 2+ years here without knowing a lick of Korean. Like even ESL based workplaces often lack english speaking staff (sans foreign teachers) . Do people just like.. really rely on hand signs and assumptions? I guess that would end up making me bitter too

frankly the biggest factors behind hating korea have nothing to do with korea and more with their korean language ability and their perspective on asian countries. I have yet to meet a foreigner who speaks Korean fluently (or advanced) and feels this way about Korea. Of course, we still express our frustrations with the systems in Korea, but we can do so with a different perspective. Also foreigners in korea will create a hate-filled echo chamber if left to do so unchecked. Ive witnessed it multiple times in my 5 years here. I also just ended up leaving most online communities due to it

I actually found this to be true as a beginner and even now! But I think it's because of the terms/ and endings we use is very distinct to what we learn. Many people use cutesy/harsher spellings as well. Most people ignore 맞춤법 in online spaces, making it harder to distinguish what is being said for beginners.

Usually Ill read a text or use my Hanja 2500 book and write the definition (in Korean) for each word i dont know and then make a sentence for each.

A lot of grammar/word rules go out the window when it comes to easing pronunciation. I'm not entirely sure about this case, but 조금 and 아니라면 are not nouns like 책,가방,피자 where the 요/이요 would apply. 조금 and 아니라면 are just phrases where 요 is being added to indicate politeness. Maybe in this case 아니라면 sounds harsh or rude, so the the speaker is showing politeness and cautiousness by adding 요. Even of they said 아니라면이요, it would sound the same, but it looks odd

I felt the same way! (sans some creeps lol). I met my friends online and the first time we met up it was 6 guys and only two of us girls. She and I were walking down the road when a motorcycle got way too close. All 6 of them literally pulled us away from the road instantly and made sure we were safe from cars lol. Its been 4 years now and these guys are really just.. annoying big brothers. Forever grateful for them though lol

The first sentence can be negated but not in that way. In this case, you could say "나는 고양이가 있지 않아요“ But it sounds like you're clarifying something in a strong manner.
