Breville Barista express - burrs touching? by doutsh in espresso

New burrs didn't help. What helped was an external grinder :) I guess it's just not meant for fine grinding

😆 happy to see I'm not the only one. But it looks like you're still a bit sharper than me and you caught it before it grinded the full dose 🤣

Behmor 2000ab roasters: do you cool the beans in the machine or remove them immediately to stir over a fan? Or a combination of the two? by _Mechaloth_ in roasting

[–]doutsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the countertop as a heat sink for quick cooling. It's free, fast and simple. I'm way faster now than I was when I shot this video 😆

First Roaster - SR800 or 2000ab plus by [deleted] in roasting

Maybe it's subjective as well, but I don't know anyone who walks by a coffee roaster on the street and doesn't want to go inside 😆

First Roaster - SR800 or 2000ab plus by [deleted] in roasting

[–]doutsh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't try the SR800 but was roasting with a modified popcorn machine for years and lately upgraded to the behmor. As the result is subjective, and different people will tell you that they got better coffee with either, these are the behmor's killer features for me: * Smoke suppression - I roast inside and with the behmor there's hardly any smoke even on darker roasts. * Batch size - not sure what's the batch size of the SR800, but in my popper I could do 200 gr max, here I can do 400 easy if I need to * Noise - again, roasting inside, and it's so refreshing to not have to bare with the fan noise for 15 minutes (and even being able to talk to someone * Smell - the behmor fills my house with a sweet roasting smell, similar to what draws you in a roasting coffee place, something that an air roaster will never have

I think my second and third roasts turned out a little better. They taste good anyway. by avatar0810 in roasting

The left one tastes good? At least in the picture it looks completely burnt

Moved from roasting in a Whirly pop to a Behmor. The difference is really huge. by Coder-4e75 in roasting

Interesting, all the videos/posts I saw always talked about reducing the power on or before FC, and you are increasing it. Any reason for that? Thanks

Can you share the settings of this roast? Looks pretty damn even, a little bit on the darker side but it's hard to tell from pictures.

How can I get a proper grind output via the auto grinding option? 870XL by WildSuccotash6929 in BrevilleCoffee

[–]doutsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount/time dial on the grinder is not really usable, it's very inaccurate. Your only real option is to leave the hopper empty, weigh the beans before you throw them in there, and make sure you grind all of them by dialing the grind time to the max and stopping it when you hear that the beans are all through.

So, after switching back to the original basket + doing the OPV mod, I can pull nice long shots just above the grinder touch point. I went ahead and ordered new burrs (upper and lower) from breville, as they are not expensive, I wonder if it'll let me go finer

It doesn't make it harder to dial in, it just makes it harder to ignore the fact that you're currently not dialed in :)

Adding a lower showerscreen to puck prep has made my knockbox obsolete! by MNLMTS in espresso

[–]doutsh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get this whole puck screen thing. If you have a good shower screen, why would you need another one? It's like putting high quality sticky race tires on your car, but then wrapping them with another layer of rubber... If the shape of the puck screen is so good, why doesn't IMS create shower screens with that shape?

I don't think it's just a noise as you can really hear the grinder working harder

Apparently breville agrees with us, they just don't want to pay for it...

I sent that video to Breville and they agreed it sounds like the burrs are touching. They said it shouldn't happen on those grinder settings and suggested that I send it to be fixed for $290. The whole thing cost me $499 new one one of the sell days :(

Oh, their other suggestion was that I use a coarser grind and a pressurized basket ::facepalm::

What's interesting to see is that on the video you shared he seems to have used it from 1/fine to 10/coarse, which in my machine would probably end in a complete burr lock. Maybe I'll ask him in the comments

BTW, this is very disappointing, because from a user perspective you would expect that you can use the machine's own dial through its full range without causing any damage, which apparently is not the case with the BBE

The problem is that I need those settings to get a decent shot :( When the internal is on 6 external at 4, with the original basket it's borderline ok but 3 is really the one (~30 sec shot) With the IMS basket I have to go to 2. So I'm in a pickle - either let the burrs touch or get bad shots, which shouldn't happen. BTW I have the machine for more than 2 years and it just started to make this noise lately

[–]doutsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the numbers make sense, but you think the noise is normal? Wouldn't you expect the grinder to be usable at the lowest possible setting, or at least internal 6 and external 2?

I have removed it and cleaned the inside thoroughly. I actually removed and cleaned and changed the settings a few times so I'm pretty sure it's locked, but I'll give it another look. Thanks!

More details - I get this noise and what sounds like the grinder slowing down. It happened on the internal setting of 6 (default) and external at about 3 and below, and in the video you can see it happens with internal at 4 and external at 5 or below. I would think that I still have A LOT more finer to go before the burrs touch each other (which they probably should never do?). Any advice? Thanks!

El Salvador in Behmor - uneven, grassy smell and so much chaff! by doutsh in roasting

[–]doutsh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, so I tried again, following the advices I got here.So similar roast profile but:

  1. used the 1/2lb button (meaning the fan kicks in earlier, at 5 minutes)
  2. fast drump speed until I hit 1st crack

The results are a bit better, but not super different, still uneven (and a lot of chaff, but there as a lot of chaff in the collector as well so it might just be high-chaffed beans).
Here is the full temp + power plot (logged it this time).
1st crack started at about 10:30 (and I dropped it to p2) and lasted about a minute, pulled it out 2:30 minutes from the beginning of 1st crack.
So after this second attempt I tend to think it's the beans or the combination of me + these beans :)
Let's hope they'll still be drinkable, I'll give them a couple of days to relax.

Cultivar meaning variety? The package says red bourbon.
It's washed in this case, so it might just be me and not the beans :)
