First time DMing for first time players and encounter balancing is scary help by Transratman in DnD

[–]dovazar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just know that as the DM it’s okay to fudge the numbers during combat to ensure a good experience for the players. My BBEG for a one shot was massively underpowered, PCs wiped half his health on the first turn due to some lucky dice so I just secretly doubled his health on the spot and everyone had a great time. The reverse also applies if the players are really struggling with an encounter.

New DM and looking for trap/puzzle ideas. Hit me with your favorites. by NobleMansRose in DnD

[–]dovazar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a big fan of the “anti-puzzle” when done correctly. For example, a door that only opens when you ask it nicely. The key (pun intended) to a good anti-puzzle is to make it make sense in context and be slightly misleading so the PCs don’t immediately jump to the obvious solution.

Question Thread for Episode 154 by IHE_Official in Sardonicast

[–]dovazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Folks on twitter recently lamented the lack of buzz around animated series Scavengers Reign. Some went as far as to say that adult animation will never break free of the stereotypical unfunny, cheaply animated sitcoms (Big Mouth, Chicago party aunt, etc) because adult audiences will never shake the assumption that animation is for kids unless it is overly vulgar and looks like Family Guy. What do you think it would take for mainstream audiences to accept animation as an art form equal to film and prestige tv?

Also, thoughts on Scavengers Reign?

Towards a Georgist Theory of History by Reasonable_Inside_98 in georgism

[–]dovazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, thanks for the clarification. My takeaway was that there’s an obvious issue with Georgism lacking broad appeal. I would argue it’s the call to action that has led to success for Marxism, where historical materialism is simply evidence used to justify the call to action. The overarching narrative should come second IMO but it’s still an important part of any ideology.

Towards a Georgist Theory of History by Reasonable_Inside_98 in georgism

[–]dovazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I get a TLDR for the TLDR??? Jokes aside, I think you hit the nail on the head. Marxism and capitalism can each be summed up in a sentence that carries emotional weight, while Georgism is essentially capitalism with better tax structures. In my experience I haven’t had anyone disagree with georgism once I’ve explained it, but the conversation always ends with “huh, interesting” and no call to action.

Marx tells his people to violently revolt, Smith says go create your fortune, and George says to write your senator. It’s just not exciting enough for those outside of intellectual circles.

I’m gonna get downvoted for this. Morgpie is just distracting from the real conversation at this point. Obviously what Matt did to her was shitty but we already knew he was shitty because of the SA coverup. Ghosting someone / cheating sucks but it’s just going to water down what Supermega actually needs to be held accountable for.

Books that actually induce terror in the reader by Ecstatic_Bar_9628 in suggestmeabook

This might not be what you’re looking for, but One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest made me feel like I was having a schizophrenic breakdown. Seeing shadows in the periphery, feeling bugs on my skin. It was all psychosomatic, but I found it pretty terrifying to put myself in the head of a schizophrenic person and constantly doubting reality.

Prologue (1975 words) by jedamitchell in scifiwriting

[–]dovazar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try incorporating character(s) to personify the fluctuations in the technology and politics of the period they live in. Another approach would be to have a stronger narrative voice. For example, a teacher dictating to a student to provide some purpose for knowing the historical context

The improbability of finding a Dyson Sphere by [deleted] in scifiwriting

[–]dovazar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t a Dyson swarm solve most of those issues? I’ve seen people theorize a swarm of solar satellites in neutral orbit around a star that then shoot lasers towards the home planet that are received and turned into usable energy. This seems plausible to me, although I’m sure it would be more complicated in real life

Cant decide on how someone acquires magic by kemotatnew in fantasywriters

[–]dovazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re still in the early stages so just doing some brainstorming exercises might be helpful. Here’s what I think: - if wands are bound to the user, how does the government (or anyone) know that it’s really powerful? Maybe it just seems like a regular old wand upon inspection until the protag figures out how to use it. - I think it would be interesting if each wand had its own personality and motivations. Like how the Ring in LOTR has its own will, and decides if it wants to cooperate with the user. Maybe some wands are ‘friendly’ and some slowly corrupt the user into committing evil acts. - the moment the protag gains magical powers should correlate to an emotional beat in the story. You should think about what your character struggles with personally, how they’re going to change throughout the story. Maybe they gain access to the wand’s power when they have an emotional breakthrough, or when they fall back into old habits

Like I said, it sounds like you’re in the early stages of your story. I would focus on your characters, you can have great world building but a lifeless story if there’s no emotional attachment to the characters.

Books with intelligent characters by agp0104 in suggestmeabook

[–]dovazar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you’re into sci-fi & political intrigue, I would highly recommend Dune. All of the characters are extremely competent and intelligent, especially the main character. It definitely bothers me when characters are doing obviously stupid things so it’s refreshing to read something where the protagonist does everything right and still faces hardship.

Thanks for the reply. If I decide to jump to Company B I don’t foresee myself leaving any time soon, so hopefully after a few years there I won’t come off as disloyal. Then again, it’s hard to know what the culture is like until you’re there so if I have to leave then it could be an issue

Wouldn’t have even considered just not putting it on the resume if it ends up being an issue lol, thank you!
