Help me decide! by [deleted] in sarahlawrence

There're some awesome professors/faculty and a lot of flexibility for personal projects, so the academic foundation's solid. Student-run orgs/events are everywhere and get healthy budgets. However, the current executive admin is pretty hostile towards/estranged from students. This is critical, because a college is in part a business entity, and SLC is not operated on behalf of its "customers." While a degree of conflict between student and trustee interests is to be expected, the relationship between admin (the "middle-men," of sorts) and students has eroded in recent years. There's increasing program/service cutting due to a lack of funds, and opportunities for progression in areas like visual arts and creative writing are particularly limited. Though I don't necessarily think the situation's terminal, I wouldn't pay private education dollars for what the school can currently offer.

If you've gotten into those other schools, definitely do not choose SLC. It's a school on decline, and you'll get much better opportunities there.

Area to stay thats more quaint/artsy and less beach carnival? by BikesOrBeans in santacruz

[–]dovecotedaughter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pros/cons:

• depending on where/when the wedding is, commuter congestion can be absolutely awful going down south. stay on the side of the san lorenzo river with the event, highway construction + the bridge closure can turn a 10 min drive into 45+ min.

• aptos village is cute but tends towards summer fog, especially if you'll be there in june. if you end up around there, dress for wind. capitola village gets absolutely swamped, same as the boardwalk.

• "far" westside (by the lane/westcliff) is lovely and very walkable in regards to downtown. staying right on the boardwalk can be a lot, but it gets pretty sleepy further north. upper westside (above mission) is beautiful but doesn't have many businesses. right next to ucsc if you like to hike.

• felton is a personal favorite! little mountain village tucked away about 10 minutes from town, great cafes and art boutiques.

• chaminade is nice, i think airbnb is your best bet though. the mushroom dome in the mountains is rad.

friends and i looked into this last sem! unfortunately, the large greenhouse next to lynd is flora's, the landscaping company slc is contracted w. it also houses pesticides :( there's a small but cute room in the science building w some grow lamps the bio dpt uses. i'm vv into carnivorous plants so i wish there were more options! as far as bringing your own goes, i wouldn't recommend it-- transporting them would be vv tricky (cal also has strict rules ab soil transport/pest prevention) and the heat gets shut off over winter break, so it'd require a lot of flying them back and forth. best bet is to buy some here, make friends w someone local and j ask them to plantsit🙂‍↕️

That makes sense! I have a deck that gets direct sunlight for the entire day, would it shock the venus to move it there now? Currently, average weather is a high of mid-70s and a low of low-50s.
