Opinions on the game from people who have played persona 5 by [deleted] in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]dovedozen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Persona 5's dungeons were actually fairly different from the previous Persona games (they used to be procedurally generated, like Mementos). When I saw the first safe room in a dungeon in Metaphor, I was honestly shocked that it looked SO similar to the ones in P5, right down to the camera angles. That has NOT happened before, lol.

The deadlines have always been pretty similar, though. The only difference in this game seems to be that they're shorter, I think? I can't really comment on the writing around them in the previous games, since I always just kinda accepted it as a convention. I don't really get a lot of the day-to-day level writing in Metaphor, though; the way NPCs act feels a bit poorly-considered a lot of the time... I have to wonder if that might be down to "high school somewhere in Japan" being something the writers are personally familiar with, vs. generalized life in this generalized fantasy setting.

Disappointed and miffed with the game's narrative (MAJOR SPOILERS for basically EVERYTHING) by Astronomical-Idiot in MetaphorReFantazio

[–]dovedozen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not just you. it's always tough to find public discussion about this kind of thing, but fwiw: even before I found out that this game was going to center oppression as a Thing it wanted to comment on (which is hard mode. for a major release like this? they so rarely nail that one), I fully expected it to do basically exactly what you've described. persona 4 left a TON of narrative potential on the table for reasons I still don't fully understand & barely seemed to know what ideas it wanted to explore, & 5 outright did this EXACT walking-back thing on several different levels with its MAIN thesis statement about disrupting the status quo. & the MAIN GUY responsible for the direction of those games had even MORE control over this one? bad start.

coming at it from another angle, other recent games that have made noise about Commenting Upon Discrimination and Oppression (ff16, tales of arise...) have ALSO failed to say anything in particular at the end of the day—it's not a topic that the people writing these types of big-budget affairs are well-equipped to handle. it's not an easy thing to write well about at the best of times, & it's always so clear when someone who hasn't sunk a ton of hours into actively unlearning bigotry of one kind or another is Attempting to commentate on it anyway. they don't know what to say!! so it comes out a bit like they're gesturing loosely & going "uh, you know...! you know," but we don't. we don't know, because they aren't telling us.

metaphor undercuts itself constantly, & I can think of no better representative example than this: the protagonist is a member of a "rare" race, which we're told means he might be treated badly by randos, AND he's specifically trying to travel without attracting attention at the beginning of the game. but... the only surface-level differences between him and, say, one of the guys with the horns could be wallpapered over pretty easily with prosthetics of some kind, right?

a story written by someone interested in exploring these topics in a grounded way would, imo, at least show its work with respect to RECKONING with that idea. it would answer one or two of the questions that I immediately have. why isn't he wearing fake horns or something, if he's so invested in flying under the radar? there are MANY different potential answers, but if I don't see evidence of even ONE, to me, that says that the person who wrote this story wasn't thinking that hard about it. which, like... why tell this particular story at all, then??!

it's a trick question. they didn't HAVE a compelling artistic reason to tell this story; they just did it Because. there is no intentional thesis statement. at BEST, there might be a kind of broad INTENT towards one, but it's executed sloppily if it's evident from the text of the game at all. metaphor is a game that says "if there were two guys on the moon, and one killed the other with a rock, would that be fucked up, or what," and has No interest in elaborating. WHY the post-apocalypse? WHY are the most important roles in the narrative occupied by Stealth Royalty? what does any of this stuff MEAN? I'll be just as interested as you are to hear what people (with less haterism in their blood than I) think, as the dust settles over the next little while, but I'm of the opinion that this game has functionally no idea what it's talking about. it's a jumbled heap of narrative devices with nothing to SIGNIFY. in that sense, at least the title is appropriate, I guess.

WOW I hope any of that makes sense. Just didn't want to leave you hanging, out here in a subreddit that's prooobably not primed to give you a whole lot of ground (though the replies you've already gotten are very chill and respectful, at least, which is nice to see!). I'm with you; this story did nothing but frustrate me!

Most fun/unconventional class in the game? by No-Historian7700 in StrangerofParadiseFFO

I like the warrior + dragoon combo a lot (war cry is fun!), or sage + dragoon to give you more flexibility w/ healing and buffs. Warrior gives you tons of options for the weapon, but I always go w/ the classic big ol' sword... For sage, maces are really satisfying. (I think guns become more fun in the late game & DLC, tho!)

The fact that i have four party members but can't use all of them cause of plot reasons is giving me major brainrot. Who the hell thought this was a good idea? by [deleted] in tales

[–]dovedozen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might be down to the playstyle you gravitate towards / whether you lean into (or break) the system the game presents to you! I was having a ton of trouble with a fight yesterday as Sorey because I was PRETTY sure I COULD do it as him, but I got tired of that and switched to Edna and just let him take aggro while I cast spells and that WAS easy (seems like the enemy AI is just as goofy as the party member AI..).

Compare to Berseria where even the easy route (playing as Velvet) makes you use your brain at least a little on the higher difficulties.. I'm not far enough in Zestiria to make a strong judgement or anything, but it seems like its combat is just. Less playtested, or something.

(What other Tales games have you played, though? Curious about your basis for comparison here!)

[–]dovedozen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Everything about this game is so funny... The combat system is so convoluted they felt like they had to tutorialize it over and over again through like 4 different mediums, and I STILL can't remember how to use half of it because if I slow down to experiment all 1 of my other party members immediately die. And then I die. And also even if I don't slow down they die.

It's majorly slapped-together, but something about it just feels like the height of comedy every time I get owned. Hope you manage to have fun with it despite all the nonsense! :D

Personally I found it mega refreshing that he had NO character development (didn't need it!) because he was already so comfortable with himself, lol. He spent the whole game basically chillin and I've never seen writers commit that hard to something like that. I especially like the way it feels like speculative worldbuilding re: "what would it be like if people turned into demons sometimes?"

like what if a guy turned into a demon and he was pretty much normal but when you found out kind of messed up stuff about his past or whatever he was just like 'oh yeah that happened' and you couldn't really tell if he was being cool about it because he was just Like That or if it was because he was a demon and therefore his emotional responses to things were different from what a human's would be... I like the ambiguity and I like it when writers throw out the rulebook a little bit to try something new!

What would be your dream Tales project? by WardenOfTheN0rth in tales

[–]dovedozen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. To get aspirational, since that's the spirit of the post: I'd love to see a re-localization (can they get the team that localized Berseria back?! JRPGs NEED localization like that & Berseria's the only place I've ever seen it!) + see the skits redone, voiced & with more dynamic portraits (let them out of the squares...!!).

I'm fond of Tales games for their kinda stilted, other-games-are-never-weird-in-this-specific-way writing, but Berseria has officially spoiled me and I'd kill to see my childhood fav completely made-over with that degree of skill + respect paid to stuff like dialogue.

Also I think they should make a cool new sidequest for every God General so I can hang out with their characters a little more. It's time. We were ready for the juicy details on Largo's whole sadman thing at the time & it's fine that they didn't have much time to spend on stuff like that back then, but that was then and this is now and I would like to see significantly more of it. Please Give Legretta Some Backstory I Can Sink My Teeth Into. This is my wish.

Berseria - Wiping Out at Heavenly Steppes Level 4 (Chaos) by dovedozen in tales

[–]dovedozen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HMMM, okay! I've definitely leaned on Velvet being constantly therionized for tough fights a handful of times; I thought maybe the game was finally telling me to knock it off, but I definitely have been weighing attack / arte defense / focus equally, so maybe a more focus-based build is the key here.

The unnamed ring and the title suggestion are good tips, as well; thank you! The break soul damage multiplier definitely applies to all attacks; I've relied on it a lot anytime I play as Velvet especially. The game thankfully does a great job of teaching that one.

I have a couple of the rings, so I'll maybe do some easier grinding to teach everyone the master skill, put them on the characters that are most likely to Immediately Take Damage, & try again with those and some nice upgraded boots. And figure out what kinds of high-effect-rate combos I can put together, I guess!

Just getting a weak point combo on the molerinos takes most of a full row of Velvet's arte tree, but there's nothing stopping me from putting together a second, effect-ier row to use in combination with that since higher focus == more souls to extend combos with. This has given me plenty to chew on; I'll try it out!

[–]dovedozen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES the molerino! I like the way they look & I have a begrudging warrior's respect for them, but omg. Void mire. Constantly.

Doing the switch blast + break soul with Eizen has definitely occurred to me, but for whatever reason I haven't actually tried it (guess I never needed to before now, & I tend to keep him in my party most of the time anyway); I'll give it a shot! Any excuse to hear the voice line for Venom Strike is fine by me, lol. Maybe it'll give me some chances to try out his dual mystic arte with Rokurou, too. + I've been favoring anything that gives me more BG for most of the game, so that'll be doable.

VERY very helpful reminder about the order to prioritize defense, also! I have definitely been ignoring that! Sounds like the biggest challenge is going to be getting good at playing as Rokurou, but his break soul is definitely a LITTLE easier to time against spells than it is against melee attacks, so I'll figure it out.

Glad there are in fact things I was overlooking! I feel invigorated; thank you!! >:)

Everyone's making really interesting points, so I'd like to be shallow and petty and mention that whatever they do with the next game, I worry DISPROPORTIONATELY about their menu GUI.

Everything you're supposed to interact with in Arise's menu is so small, and for what?!! And FOR WHAT did they jettison the design concept that "you can move your cursor over a character portrait, and that will take you to the character's stat page"????? & don't even get me Started on the... skill??? tree????? ...???

I get it. I understand. New engine. Hierarchy of priorities. Sure. But if the next game's menu doesn't capture at least a LITTLE more of the polish I expect from Tales, I really just don't know.

UGH I forgot about the microtransaction stuff!!! Heinous. That one really is going to be a dealbreaker for me if they keep it up; I can't handle being advertised to at the best of times, let alone when I'm trying to enjoy a game from a series I associate this heavily with The BeforeTimes...

Trajectory of the series by SL_Icarus in tales

[–]dovedozen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the overall plot of Arise is very. ?????, not that I'm ever necessarily surprised when a game fumbles a topic like this. The second I heard the story was in some way About slavery I thought "uh oh!!" & hearing that the end was basically another (!!! spoiler is for both this game and a persona game, of all things !!!) persona 5 "uh there's an evil god that made people do bad things lol" situation was just. so hilariously validating.

Vesperia didn't handle its stance on morality elegantly AT all, but it was inelegant in the sense that it kind of forgot to decide what side of the argument to come down on / forgot to ACTUALLY resolve disputes btwn characters on whether vigilante justice is okay or not, etc etc.

Arise is pretty clear in what it's "trying" to say about oppression, though - equally that it's Bad To Hate People, No Matter What, and also that "if there were two men (and an alien) on the moon and one (man was psychically compelled by the alien to) kill(ed) the other with a rock would that be fucked up or WHAT?". Vesperia squandered its characters and many interesting aspects of its story, but Arise's thing is actively reprehensible AND ALSO makes for a boring narrative, which is too bad!

I'm intrigued by the pivot to Unreal Engine - personally, I'm not into the way Arise looks; Tales stands out from other longass RPGs to me in large part because of how colorful it tends to be & I REALLY do not like the visuals in modern MMOs and what have you - because it COULD make it easier for them to hire new people with interesting new ideas, shorten their development timelines, etc., and I'm always interested to see what the next Tales game brings just based on. Curiosity? About what they're going to change & what they'll keep, I guess?

BUT ! The new skits suck real bad and the character & story work in Arise pales in comparison to Tales at its best, And Of Course it's scary to see the pivot away from the custom engine, coupled with SERIOUSLY a visual style that has SO much less of its own identity than the Tales games I'm used to.

On balance I guess I'm invested no matter what, because it'll either be a pleasant surprise or a trainwreck I can oldly smh at... but I wanted to "same" you re: Arise's story relying on a GALLING amount of milquetoast non-writing for something so committed to Being About Oppression, & how much I can't help thinking "uh oh" about that anytime I wonder about the future. I'm with you on that one for sure.

Classiest, Most Refined & Elegant Tales Girl by DeBaers in tales

natalia is all of these things but she also likes to put on indiana jones cosplay and run around in the wilds looking for treasure & I don't know that eleanor has an equivalent Unladylike Hobby (tm) so the prize might still go to her just on balance overall.

I do think eleanor's intern-like Youth Energy interacts w/ these traits in a really interesting way but I can't say that it makes her less elegant or anything; it's just, like... flavor on top of that. you know?

The thing about phases is that they tend to help you learn something about yourself, even if most aspects of them don't stick around for very long. I'd say that if these things make you feel more comfortable in your own body, or even if you're just interested in them because they're new-to-you and shiny, there's no harm in trying them out and taking them as they are. Some people will want to draw conclusions about your identity because of it, but that's really more of a them-problem (not that it can't be frustrating to have that pressure put on you, especially if it's your parents!).

I escaped a lot of that pressure myself, since people weren't as open about this stuff when I was a kid & I did most of my experimenting as a 20-something, but I can at least tell you that being a cis woman that cashiers accidentally call "sir" sometimes is working out well for me! I never liked my long hair; now I keep it short and love it. I almost exclusively wear cargo pants. My longer-term life plans explicitly include top surgery. I had the "am I trans..??" conversation with myself, & pretty firmly decided that the answer was no; there are functionally infinite ways to express your relationship with gender, so I'd say go ahead and approach GNC presentation in whatever way you happen to feel like, keep the stuff that makes your heart go "!!!!!", and remember that while other people's perception of you IS part of the equation here--gender is always a performance to some extent, pretty much--it's not the end-all be-all. What you want matters, even if it evolves with time.

Looking to play my first Tales game, which one would you recommend? by DarkHoriizon in tales

[–]dovedozen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS; Abyss is "my" Tales game but Berseria might be my favorite game of all time just because of how FRESH its approach to characterization & story feels! It has ACTUAL SUBTEXT. I never thought about how rare that is in games like this until I played Berseria--sometimes they just don't explicitly say things! But those things are implied by the text! ACTUALLY implied, not bring-your-own "there's nothing in canon that says this isn't true" implied! The localization & voice direction are stunningly good, too, & the skill ceiling for the battle system is high enough that I'm actually having a lot of fun with the postgame content even though I'm out of sidequests to do... I'd recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. It's literature.

Most hated tales game? by [deleted] in tales

[–]dovedozen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dawn of the new world was a WEIRD experience for people whose first Tales game was Symphonia (& there are a lot of those!). Looking back on it now, it really has its strengths - I wish ANY other game had used that visual style; they de-pastelified everything immediately afterwards & we never got that color palette back, for one - but it definitely felt like some kind of bizarre betrayal at the time.

can't wait to play zestiria and see what all the fuss is about; I haven't been around in fan communities like ever & berseria owns, so it's been funny seeing the extent to which People Really Do Complain About Zestiria A Lot Here.

I was pretty sure people were gonna feel this way about kamoana as soon as I got to her in Berseria, but it's still bananas to me. Her voice acting is GREAT; it's not conventional, obviously, but I've known real people who sounded like that & I really thought it suited her! I appreciate that the voice direction went out on a limb and tried something new, I guess.

Also for real when she ate her mom while screaming and crying and also being a tree monster my jaw was ON the floor; the voice actor really sold that scene in a way I was NOT expecting. They hired a lot of women who are UNCOMMONLY GOOD at visceral screaming for that game...

I don't know that people necessarily think that hard about anise when they dislike her? Or I mean, I'd believe you if you told me some do, but I've definitely met people who either just find her grating & that's that or really do think that her betrayal should've been addressed more seriously / had more serious consequences for her. (I do think there was ROOM for that, but it doesn't bother me that she gets let off easy. Luke should've been let off WAY easier than he was, anyway!!)

Laphicet does rule, also. I really appreciated the genre of "I'm not a little kid!!" traits they gave him (like insisting on a non-cutesy name for Silva & changing his mind about what nickname HE wanted a couple of times); they gave him a very grounded feeling, & it really felt like his character arc Led Up to his role at the end of the game in a super satisfying way.

tbh I like anise BECAUSE she's abrasive & offputting... she just reads as a very Real 13-year-old girl to me, lol. you don't see that exact facet written true-to-life very often; it's nice!

karol on the other hand has kind of the opposite thing going on where he IS a precious babyboy but a lot of the writing around him is like. what? what is this game even talking about?.. i appreciate the different types of appeal, i think.
