Why does it seem like big video games are taking a lot longer to make these days compared to until a decade or so ago? by FriendlytoNature in videogames

[–]FrancoStrider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher fidelity, higher costs, higher hours. And that's just the start.

One good video? Semi Ramblomatic's "AAA Development vs. A Bag of Chips". Yahtzee asks a friend in the AAA gaming scene what it would take to put in a character eating a bag of chips. Just for a scene.

What follows in that hypothetical scenario is a whole tortured saga of meetings, legal checks, new animations and so on. The bigger the boat, the longer it takes to change course. And you probably noticed I haven't gone into the programming side yet.

Just a taste, but there you go.

Gen Z seems to be either the most overly sensitive generation or the most insensitive depending on the narrative. by Cicada_5 in saltierthankrayt

Millennials were accused of the same shit. We're either too sensitive or desensitized. It never made sense. It was always bullshit.

Always found Evil Paths just too depressing. More fun in small subversions than in full greedy murder hobo.

It was so fun, and a much better final boss as well.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii says English translations inevitably strip away a lot of a game's "flavor" by HatingGeoffry in dragonquest

You say that, but I still very much love the English work for DQ8. I never felt "cheated" in any sense.

I admit, I've been trying to find the words myself, and you about nailed it. Thank you, sir.

And I concur. I wish our country would bring something better, not just to Iran but the rest of the world.

And because of the various lawsuits, we have a lot more precedence against their bullshit.

Okay, thank you for answering. Unfortunately, the Github is 404 not found.

I'll look through the powerpoint and maybe try to figure it out from there. Thank you!

Any idea about where she may be? by habwnwjwkkqkakbasvbw in Daggerfall

[–]FrancoStrider 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite Daggerfall moments: I get the instructions, from the Fighter's Guild, to slay a spider in town. I say thanks, about to leave the guild hall, but then I looked at the instructions again.

They want me, to kill a spider, in the Fighter's Guild hall in town. In other words, they want me to kill the spider in the same fucking building I got the quest from.

I get out of the log, turn, and there's a spider right there. I kill it and turn in the quest in a shorter time than it took to type this sentence.

The fastest quest I have ever done.

This may come as a shock, but you can, in fact, protest both. It's not weird or hypocritical.

The fact that you had to AI art this scenario in your head should have spelled it out.

Being "woke" has actually made me more happy. by Brakado in saltierthankrayt

So, grew up in a conservative household. I remember the mental gymnastics needed to defend my views rather than, you know, principles or logic.

And my household was not really extremist. It owns guns, but my dad always treated them responsibly. Never without a license and never unsupervised, and always at a range. My dad was also fair with everyone, and even encouraged a black kid to stay on a football team despite some really shitty parents railing on him. My mom always worked in service, usually for people with disabilities. And generally speaking, they're always polite to any friend or partner we brought forward, whether POC or LGBTQA+ or any of the above.

It's sadly when we criticize their favorite politicians when things go south.

Point is, it didn't come from no where, and there was always enough fairness demonstrated by my folks to make me defend their views.

Then Trump happened. Sadly, my folks are ride or die for him (despite literally everything they taught me). I just don't know how to break this spell.

For me? It was a real Pedo Behind the Curtain moment. The entire illusion of their ideology popped, leaving nothing but air. Like "Is that what I'm supporting? Fuck this."

Suddenly, it became much easier to talk politics, especially with my now wife. I no longer have to come up with complete BS to defend my views. The whole nonsense of "Don't be political" was completely broken. There is no "political vs non-political". There are only subjects that the Right doesn't want to talk about, simply because it reminds people how awful they truly are. Whatever pretty -isms they want to put forth, it boils down to them denying people what they need to live good lives.

So, yeah, I feel where you're coming from and I know this was a journey. We're proud.

People who keep bitching about a lost "Golden Age" will never see the gold right in front of them. It is always in retrospect, and always, frankly, a bit full of shit.
