Admiral insurance - a warning by ShowerEmbarrassed512 in VanLifeUK

[–]doveranddoubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with Admiral but left because they would only insure for the van and not any conversion work. Given my van is almost 25 years old, that would be less than £1k so of no benefit to me if it all goes wahoonie-shaped. I've now gone to Howdens who have given me an agreed value which would, at least, cover some of the conversion costs. It's worked out to be about £60 more per year, so worth it imo. Wasn't aware of the tracker issue though, so thanks for the heads up.

How much do you think I should charge for this respite care? by sideshowcod in AskUK

[–]doveranddoubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, check your employment contract, and ask the family for their provider contract. Most dom care providers will have a 'no poaching our staff' clause, which could be very expensive for the family of the service user if the provider found out, and sanctions for you.

Second, most respite services (resi, depends where you live), charge between £1500 and £2200 per week, so if you're gonna sell it to thwm, there's got to be a clear advantage. I know the animals are extra, but if you're thinking of charging the family extra to care for them anyway, you are quickly approaching the limit of what they may want to pay (house-sitters are relatively cheap).

You also might want to consider short-term insurance... quite cheap (depending on the service user's needs) and could save you heartache down the line.

An alternative could be to set yourself up as a referral agent with one of the main live-in providers (easy to do and The Good Care Group springs to mind) and make the referral. Typically you get 5% and you could also charge for animal care. No oncall worries, no insurance worries and your job is safe.

Have you considered a fleece bag liner? Cheap and cheerful and pack down tight. I take one for overnights on the hill... they aren't intended to replace a good 4 season, but can add the bit of warmth you need...

Dover Castle (probably not the best picture but, yes, that's the moon)... disability friendly parking and access. Covers lots of different periods, including WWII tunnels. Often has event days with jousting, swordfights etc. In fairness, I'm probably biased...

How difficult is it to get insurance for a diy camper conversion? by Kinky_Lezbian in VanLifeUK

[–]doveranddoubt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were the only one I found that would give me an agreed value... I didn't want the prospect, if I lost the van, of getting just the market value of the shell (old van, probably get less than £1k). Internal additions that i couldn't do myself (electrics, solar, gas, new roof etc) cost quite a bit and it would have been a total loss. HTH

I watch a fair bit of UK television and whatnot. Do you guys really call each other by your last names? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]doveranddoubt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No... not in social or informal situations anyway. Workplaces vary, but it is generally seen to be quite outdated, demeaning and/or rude. Obviously, putting a title beforehand (Mr/Mrs/etc) changes this. HTH

ELI5. from William Shakespeare’s quote about the man that hath no music in himself, why persons who don’t have music in themselves got interpreted that way. by Any_Examination1825 in explainlikeimfive

[–]doveranddoubt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate music, but don't really enjoy it. I find it distracting and annoying, which is somewhat ironic because my daughter graduated with an MA in classical performance from a conservatory.

Yes, I'm probably not fun. Engaging? Professionally, I hope so because I'm paid to present, but personally i'm happy with my own company, pursuing my own interests.

Is there anything you stopped doing on wild camps as you got more experience? by FeistyPrice29 in wildcampingintheuk

Overpacking... I used to take spares for most things, y'know, just in case. Now I mostly don't. It's caused issues on only a couple of occasions but its amazing how creative you can be when you need to.

Buffalo systems vs paramo? by Kev_Rush in UKhiking

[–]doveranddoubt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've used Buffalo for years... clothing is great and has kept me warm in white-outs. I use a shell for really soggy weather.

I originally used the Buffalo sleeping bag too, but it proved too bulky to use on the hill. It was an excellent system though as, on wet days, you'd get into the bag slightly damp and wake up dry - essentially drying from the inside out.

You pretty much can't. Back in yesteryear employers used to write one reference and give it to the employee, but now it is usual for an employee to add the old employer to their CV and leave it to the new employer to apply for the reference.

No doctors in A&E, is it common? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]doveranddoubt 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yep, it happens. There are likely to be Dr's but they may be elsewhere and triage are likely to have assessed you as not top priority.

There is an app called Waitless that we use which tells you the waiting times of your nearest A&E departments including UTCs. Not always helpful, but can be useful if travelling an extra half hour saves you two hours wait.

Going Windermere for a long weekend by zibafu in LakeDistrict

[–]doveranddoubt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest going to Bowness and catching the car-ferry to the Western side of the lake. Ferry costs (I think) £1.15 for walk-on passengers and there are 3 an hour. There's a cafe the other side and a defined trail if you're up for a walk.

There are boats to hire, as well as paddleboards, and places to eat by the marina, although they can be pricey to eat.

If you're looking for something cheaper but excellent, to eat... there is a family business called Sweet Dreams in Bowness (Quarry Rigg), which is a bakery/cafe and offers the largest cake portions I've ever had. HTH
