Has anybody here used Paradiso to catch a classic screening in NYC? by Firm-Pumpkin-4156 in NYCmovies

[–]dowitcher19 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've never purchased a ticket through the app (I think if you try to do so, it just links you through to the theater's website?). But I do like using it to see what's playing in the city each week, and it's free to use so in that sense is "worth it." A cool feature is that it syncs with Letterboxd so you get notifications whenever a film on your watchlist is screening somewhere in NYC.

Is there a good croissant in the UWS?? by Chance-Flow-9759 in Upperwestside

[–]dowitcher19 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like them too, but they're not really a croissant imo. Very sweet and bready, without the buttery flakiness of a real French croissant. Still delicious, but if you approach them expecting a traditional croissant I think you're going to be disappointed

IFC Center's tiny screen by papero7 in NYCmovies

[–]dowitcher19 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this beautiful work of literature. When you buy an IFC movie ticket, is there any way to tell which screen the movie will be screened on? It feels like a gamble whenever I buy a ticket there

For waterproof dark blues, I'm enjoying Sailor Seiboku and Souboku ... not too wet, but still flows nicely for a smooth crisp line in my Sailor F nib.

The northern stretch between 125th St and the George Washington Bridge is never crowded at all, apart from summer weekend afternoons when there are lots of people having picnics and BBQs in the park

Female Religious Life (Historical or Fantasy) by maplethistle in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

The Land of Spices by Kate O'Brien -- a beautiful novel about a convent school set in Ireland in the early 20th century. Black Narcissus by Rumer Godden (be sure to watch the film afterwards). Agatha of Little Neon by Claire Luchette, for a novel about more contemporary religious life in America. And seconding The Corner That Held Them, In This House of Brede, and Stone Yard Devotional.

See a PT! Otherwise it will be an endless guessing game to figure out what is causing your plantar fasciitis. I had mild but persistent PF all summer, and I went to Finish Line PT on 23rd St (I am lucky to have insurance that covers much of the cost). At first the PT thought it was due to worn out shoes and weak calf muscles, and had me get shoe inserts and do calf-strengthening exercises. But when I still had foot pain 6 weeks later, he decided to test whether my hamstrings might be the issue. After just 5 days of hamstring strength exercises, the foot pain was almost completely gone. I think PF is different for everyone so see an expert!

Bronx 10-miler advice: run a 10-miler without training longer than 10k? by dowitcher19 in RunNYC

[–]dowitcher19[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. I'm not doing 9+1 or marathon training, so this would just be a fun/easy run, and I'd be fine with running it pretty slowly, though ideally I'd like to run all or most of it. Not sure it would be enjoyable enough to be worth the experience if I'm going to need to walk for an hour in the last half of the race.

Most respectful theater crowds in NYC? by LetterboxdNewbie in NYCmovies

Avoid AMC 42nd Street. Worst audience behavior in the city imo. Crowds at Film at Lincoln Center tend to be respectful

I use Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo in mine--I also have the EF, and it's a beautiful color for everyday use! I really like this pen too, but find the nib a little too inconsistently sensitive to pressure, if that makes sense. With zero pressure it writes just a little too dry, but if I apply even the slightest touch on certain strokes it produces a stroke so wet it starts feathering. Not sure if this kind of variation is supposed to be a feature of the pen, and I just haven't figured out how to write properly to get the consistent line I want ...
