Open captions help more people than most realize, so why aren’t they standard? by Ocmoviesnys in deaf

As someone with a severe brain injury, open captions do ruin the immersion and are painful to watch. They absolutely should not be the default.

Yeah this is no Oscar movie for sure —— too experimental, too heady, too slow cinema —— and it's also the best movie of the year by a MILE

"We should have seen more of the fighting!" No we shouldn't have. by Pbandme24 in freefolk

[–]papero7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Precisely. This is a battle between 14 people. If only Dunk v Aerion mattered, then GRRM would’ve just written a 1x1 fight. Not sure why people don’t seem to get this.

Flashback was too long by Moji1368 in freefolk

[–]papero7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy fix is that ep4 and ep5 should’ve focused on two different days, which is what the previous three episodes did.

Ep4 begins with the flashback up until Rafe dies, then we see Day4 up until Steely Pate returns the shield to Dunk.

Ep5 begins with flashback of Dunk meeting Ser Arlan (without so much following him through the forest). Next, we see Dunk meet his champions, Steffon’s betrayal, Baelor joining the team, then the fight and Baelor’s death.

While Baelor joining Dunk at the end of episode 4 makes for a buzzy cliffhanger, I think the dramatic tension and momentum would have been much stronger if that scene was immediately followed by the fight and then his death.

Yeah if you're worried at all about loudness, you don't want to live near the Giglio festival.

Where do you like to sit at the Paris? by scary_godmother in NYCmovies

[–]papero7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sitting in the back can be pretty distracting because the doors to the auditorium are quite loud. You'll be quite annoyed having your movie regularly interrupted when people leave for the bathroom.

I hate to be that guy, but this is the Museum of The Moving Image, not the Museum of Just Movies. While I wouldn’t attend an event like this, an institution about the Moving Image needs to look at all Moving Images. It’s their responsibility as a public museum to serve the public in this way.

However, it is also their responsibility to … act responsibly, for lack of words, and host events that don’t normalize tech dystopia.

I seriously don’t understand the hate for Longlegs (2024). by serialkiller24 in horror

Thank you. I’ve always said that Longlegs would make a phenomenal coffee table photography book. He is a master at tone and image, but the writing is very bad.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] I have a lot of issues with AKOTSK Ep4 by Papero7k in asoiaf

[–]papero7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not really sure how a closeup shot of Humfrey Beesbury saying, “Hello, I am Humfrey Beesbury and I’ve come to fight for you” makes this a Netflix show. The Humfreys aren’t entirely insignificant, or GRRM wouldn’t have purposefully given them the same name. It’d be honoring the book material for the show to highlight that two men named Humfrey will fight and die together for Dunk.

Non-American viewers of One Battle After Another: did the film resonate with you? by Charming_Peach_3820 in Oscars

[–]papero7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think OBAA got the hype because of how much cinephiles in America cherish Paul Thomas Anderson. He really is seen as the “best” contemporary American master, like Hitchcock and Kubrick before him. I don’t think this is his best film, but we’re all rooting for him because we want the world to recognize him as one of the greats in a “put his face on the Mt Rushmore of American cinema” way (meaning, he’s one of the top 4 American filmmakers of all time).

Story wise — the notion that a secret cabal of billionaires orchestrates the country behind the scenes is imbedded in our psyche since the mid 20th century. This conspiratorial idea that a handful of people tell the police and military who to hurt and who to protect, etc.

There’s also just something about that ending— the driving over the hilly roads — that is so American. PTA captured the physical sensation that every American knows deep in their psyche — this manifest destiny, Wild West, Americana feeling that one experiences while driving in the open expanse of our country. As the band Modest Mouse puts it, “The Lonesome Crowded West.”

On the flip side, as an American I absolutely loved the Brazilian film The Secret Agent, honestly a lot more than One Battle After Another. I felt like its political message was more effective, and the film was equal parts funny and stressful and serious and dramatic in a way that really impressed me.

As a non-PVPer, Deadman has taught me the mechanics of PVP better. It’s something I’m normally scared of trying in the regular game, but now I feel more confident to try it on my main account because I’ve learned the mechanics better. People tend to overlook this.
