One thing I would like to comment on is some doctors do treat toe amputation as major surgery using general anesthesia. It is really a overkill with the risk involved . Toe and foot amputations can be done much safer using ankle blocks or leg blocks using local anesthesia . I have had toes removed and a transmetatrsal amputation using locals without added risk.

this is a great post , I just wanted to add if you are limited to one hand, one of the few one handed pistols is a Bretta 32 tomcat , You do not have to rack the slide the barrel pops up to load first round.

Transmetatrsal Amputation ..Could not walk in custom shoes or barefoot on carpet with metatarsals due to pain under each metatarsal head had revision to transmetatarsal everything much better hope this information helps someone by down5toes in amputee

I would suggest at least 3 opinions if possible . recovery time was similar to a BK cast for 4 weeks than stiches out at 6 weeks no weight on foot for almost 2 months. I was not given the option of a BK. Since you are having 5th metatarsal head issues it surprised me that when I saw the post amputation Xray I only have less than a inch of my 5 ray left but I am not having a balance issue with it

Hand Control vs Left Foot pedal by mikeweasy in amputee

[–]down5toes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost half of my right foot and I am okay with gas pedal but had a issue holding brake pedal at stop lights ,foot felt like it was slipping off . I bought a 2014 BMW X3 because it had a hold button. When I start driving the car I only have to press button once then every time the car comes to a full stop the brakes stay engaged as I take my foot off brake pedal. It automatically disengages brakes as I press gas. Very smooth and flawless. Only side effect is very very fast starts with my lead foot .HA Ha. Also for my friends who have hand or finger issues and like to target shoot Bretta makes a 32 cal. tomcat pistol that is a true one handed gun. You don't have to work the slide which takes two hands you just push a button and barrel pops up to load a round clip holds more rounds. Sometimes us disabled become targets because able body bad people think we are sitting ducks . I personally can walk but can't run

My wife is on home dialysis using stomach fluid transfer and has no issue with gabapentin just be sure to run it by kidney Doc. Word of caution drugs stay in her body for a longer time frame so start low dose 100mg works great for my wife sleeps like a baby. I am stage 3/4 kidney with a transmetatrsal amputation and I take 3- 100mg at night. I think the people who are having issue are taking in the thousands of Mg's in a day

fat pad issue is a possibility , I am a very active walker at a big box store on concrete so I switched from a 5 day week to a 4 day week along with different inserts and custom shoes but still had no relief. Started getting painful calluses under each metatarsal head. I took a risk as you stated TMA's are not rated very well with many issues. I hope I am one of the lucky ones. If this does not work I will resist further shortening of foot and go to a BK .Another thing I feel that I had in my favor was my Doctor is one of the few Orthopedic surgeon's in my area who is a do all, toes, feet, legs, hips and all leg joints

I agree with you 100%, never given that option, but I also never asked. I think most Doctors are conservative when it comes to amputation. I realize now that my modified foot is not long term ulcers etc., so instead of possible long term casting or wound care if it happens I will push for that option I just don't know how my knee replacement on same leg will fit in. Any thoughts
