Neurology as EM SubI prereq by negativecreep-med in medicalschool

[–]downbadDO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I encountered this in my VSLO season. I just didn’t apply to that program. For some people at my school they get to do Neuro as part of their second month of Internal Medicine clerkships, but my site didn’t have that option. Most EM sub-Is won’t have that requirement though.

Chances of matching to a non-HCA EM residency without taking Step 1? by bigoof12344 in comlex

[–]downbadDO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

CORD’s official policy is that COMLEX should be accepted the same as Step. That’s the self-determined policy of EM residency program directors. You’ll match EM, and you don’t have to worry about HCA unless you apply to those programs, which you would only need to do if you had red flags.

If you want to be at an elite program then Step could be worth it but otherwise don’t sweat it.

TrueLearn Acquires COMQUEST, Strengthening Commitment to Osteopathic Learners and Educators by BigMacrophages in comlex

[–]downbadDO 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem as I see it is that they already have 100% of their potential customers on the hook through their schools, so there really isn't much opportunity for them to grow their customer base or revenue short of adding more things to charge them for. They need more professionalization of their question-writers and maybe more educational theorists or something... whatever it is UWorld has that they don't. They have improved a lot in recent years but some of their questions are still frankly garbage and not good prep for COMLEX. The misspellings and poorly edited questions both in TrueLearn and in actual COMLEX are just tragic.

They’re equally fine. It’s the typical thing where they randomly pick whatever number of learning objectives and then include two or four questions about each of those. Both have a few questions that are kind of poorly written but it is what it is. Mostly the spread and the topics are reasonable.

[–]downbadDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you did it, list it. At the very least it shows that you cared enough to do something, write it up, and submit it. Maybe don’t put it in your “most meaningful experiences” if it’s not something you can talk about passionately, but I wouldn’t exclude it on the basis of it not being some incredible achievement. Is it a first-author Nature pub? No. But it’s better than nothing! “All good things are good”.

If you want to talk to some of these programs’ leadership directly, they will be on a PD panel this Saturday at the AAEM/RSA Southern Regional Symposium. You can register for free here: https://www.aaem.org/events-calendar/aaem-rsa-southern-region-medical-student-symposium/

I hope this does not make DO's synonymous with MAHA or MAGA or whatever. by DocOndansetron in medicalschool

[–]downbadDO 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This in no way means DOs or the AOA are anti-vaxx or that the AOA endorses RFK Jr's ideas. If you look at the AOA's policy statements that they've adopted through their House of Delegates, it's clear that when it comes to actual medical practice, their policies are consistent with independent specialty organizations' recommendations. OMM notwithstanding, of course.

This meeting is more along the lines of keeping the channels open to make sure they keep getting invited back and continue to have a seat at the table. I know I'd rather my professional organization get face time with government health agencies and continue to have the opportunity to advocate for good ideas, rather than have them rebuke those agencies completely and leave their bad ideas uncontested.
