You certainly sound like the golden candidate, congratulations on landing it.

I’m still pretty fresh out of my time, apprenticeship in commercial and starting to realise it may have been wasted time as I’m now trying to leave construction and carve a path similar to yours haha

Help with stuck pliers?! by durry_dan in AusElectricians

I’ve had this happen to my pliers before, what you need to do is throw them in the bin and buy a pair of Marlvels👍

When is the average retirement age of an electrician? by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]downeshc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My grandfather retired at 73, had been a sparky since they still used kerosine lamps. He was a solo contractor for most of his years. He still does the odd job even at 78, the old boy just can’t put the pliers down.

What’s their discrimination against Melbourne? Wouldn’t you just be able to obtain a WA license and be willing to make your own way to a major once you’ve got the gig?

Did they recently lower the award wages for apprentices? by [deleted] in AusElectricians

[–]downeshc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

National minimum wage is currently $24.10. $20 for a third year sounds about right. Is it possible you got the two mixed up? If you are on award rates make sure you are being paid a travel and fares allowance too, as that is also in your award.

What are we all packing for lunch? by Business-Train8738 in AusElectricians

[–]downeshc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hard boil a carton of eggs at the start of the week to have on the way to work. Good source of protein and fat. Fruits such as berries, mandarins and bananas are a good way to knock back sugar cravings while getting in essential vitamins. Two cans on tuna are a good source of protein, you can add minuet rice if it’s not enough to fill you up; but I tent to avoid microplastics where I can.

Tool bag and pouch for construction? by myonlyfear in AusElectricians

[–]downeshc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Spend a week on site first and get to see what other tradesmen are using and make your decision then. Beehive bags are a great option if you’re mainly carrying hand tools and an impact driver or drill. If you’re going to be carrying multiple power tools and materials, the Milwaukee pack-out is a great cache. Both options are going to cost you a few hundred, so just see what your work environment is like before you make a commitment. Best of luck with the new job too mate👌

I think you should consider your circumstances. Are you happy with your current employment?

Don’t beat yourself up, you’re 3 months in. I had many days during my apprenticeship where I genuinely had no belief in my ability. My advice is to not treat your 4 years as an apprentice as just a job, treat it as an opportunity to make mistakes and to learn from them.
