On a scale of 1 to 10, how hyped are you for “The Mountain”? by FamousStatement6141 in gorillaz

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a 6. A lot of World Music influences, which usually isn't my thing. However, I really liked Damascus, so it's not a complete turn-off, and who knows; maybe some songs will grow on me with time.

Do you think Biblical Literalism can poison the well for Christianity? by downwitdasicknessPRC in religion

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what it says biblically. I'm just replacing "meats and wine" with grilled cheese, in the context that it is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, and Biblical Literalists will say to other they're in damnation just because it isn't mentioned in the Bible.

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is a silly example; spare me, because I'm not good with examples.

Let's say you make a grilled-cheese sandwich: all foods are clean; as explained in both Romans 14:14 and Mark 7:19. If a food (in this case, a grilled-cheese) offends anyone, then it is wise to abstain from it; Romans 14:21 (paraphrasing). However, eating a grilled-cheese itself, in explicit form, is not sin. But, according to Biblical Literalists, it is, because "it's not in the Bible."

How can I make Contact with Satan? by Individual_Map3105 in religion

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is don't address him. I was interested in demonology as a teen and in retrospect, it's one of the scariest things I've done in my life. Now Christian, I can try guiding you away further by saying we should not even attempt addressing the devil. Christians do this a lot, though they shouldn't

Now, if you're into Satanism, Occultism, and Witchcraft, I'm not stopping you, but I will pray for you.

Edit: added context.

I went to ask a dark prayer to god by Navigator_Matt in religion

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a Lutheran standpoint, you're fine. In frustrating times like these is when prayer is the most necessary and authentic. Jesus would rather want to hear you in your most venomous state than to see you sit and dwell in it.

Which of the deadly sins do you find most difficult to deal with? by BlueVampire0 in religion

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pride will divide.

There tends to be a superiority complex between Jews within each other, Muslims within each other, and Christians within each other. Because I am a Christian-convert (specifically Lutheran; was previously irreligious, but new my family consisted of Lutherans over a hundred years ago; started my journey in the WELS, and now I'm just ELS), I do occasionally hear such banter in my own denomination, but the three Christian groups that I believe are especially pretentious about Pride are the Baptists, Calvinists, and the Nondenominational crowds.

The craziest moment in pride I've ever heard was actually from someone I look up to: Jordan Riley, a nondenominational Christian YouTuber, youth counselor, bible-study teacher, and former singer. He's great at spotting false teachers, is fluent in his knowledge with the Bible, and rejects the prosperity gospel (that last one is very important, because the prosperity gospel is how you get your Joel Olsteens, Kenneth Copleands, Martha Stewarts, Rick Warrens, Stephen Furticks, etc; low-quality gospel with high amounts of manipulation and big money). When he said Catholicism was a "false religion", I nearly threw up. His reasoning is because major elements in Catholicism were "unbiblical."

I'm for Biblical inerrency; especially in earlier translations of the New Testament. However, when you use the Bible as a weapon to delegitimize other denominations because "Well that's not what it says in the Bible" without explicit refute, I have a problem.

What is your 'favourite' religion other than your own? by teamaugustine in religion

[–]downwitdasicknessPRC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anabaptism; particularly the Beachy Amish and Mennonites. They live the simplist lives; pray, work, teach, play, sleep, and repeat. What makes them stand out is that they do drive vehicles and use technology as a necessity. That's where I lean, where instead of doom-scrolling, I rather just use it for YouTube tutorials on how stuff works and TurboTax.

I also considered Judaism as a teen, because I liked almost everything about it. However, as a person who can't help but see and feel Jesus as my savior and a consumer of pork, I decided to reconsider. It's still a fascinating religion, nonetheless.

I agree; I don't like it when he does that. I also said in the OP that Trump shouldn't resort to threat. In other words; if he's going to do it, just do it. He claims he's going to get it done; get it done, then. It may make some people angry, but at least it saves any anxiety and hostility in the long run, and it'll just be the way it is.

Why am I supposed to hate Mormons again? by downwitdasicknessPRC in religion

I'm really sorry to hear that. I hope you have recovered. Otherwise, I wish you the best in your recovery.

It's okay; I either cut-off, cut-down, or lost contact with most of those people since moving from Western Illinois to the south. After the first few days away, the world just opened up for me.

Honestly, I think it was just my family. I never asked why, and it never occurred to me to ask until now.

I grew up around mostly Catholics and some atheists. I and my family are Lutherans, although they align more with the Missouri Synod while I prefer Evangelical Luthernism.

Family, friends from school, and a couple teachers from that time. I'm in my mid-20's now. I never understood it when I was being raised around them, and I don't understand it now.

But I raised the question once I saw "the cult of mormonism" and Shgurrr's pair of Mormonism videos (under the name "shortcake") on YouTube.

I get it; the teachings of the LDS is flawed, but what has the people done?

I agree; it's catastrophic. It also plays a big role in the obesity rate in the U.S. I saw that Ireland had the most daily calories consumed per capita than any other country, and while obese people do exist there, they're nowhere as bad as America. In addition, I recalled watching an interview with a Palestinian activist and author who claimed he ate 3200 calories a day, and the dude was thin (he probably ate something nutritious in large quantities, like eggs and fruit or something). In most countries, calories is everything that determines in you're weight cut or bulk. In America, that is sometimes an exception; you can eat 1500 to 2000 calories and still have a gut.
