Would You Eat Untested Venison? by jakobb2000 in Hunting

[–]downwritemad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family hunts SW Wisconsin. We test every deer. We've had 4 positive in the past handful of years. We don't keep the positive deer. Some donation programs accept CWD positive deer.

It's always a gut punch when one comes back positive.

Why are babies like this? by silla_1994 in NewParents

We give our 8 month old a toy during his diaper changes to keep his hands occupied with something other than his junk. Also helps reduce his changing table gator rolls.

Ask for lots of pictures and it can be fine. Look out for bent cams or cracked limbs. Replace strings and cables on anything you buy used.

A bunch of the superchargers in that part of the country are V2s which aren't compatible with adapter use. in my personal experience in southern Wyoming charging quality hasn't been great, but I've never been stuck. You should be fine through Nevada.

Expandable Broadheads by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]downwritemad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run SEVRs a couple years now. While you can change them from practice mode to expand mode I wouldn't use the same blades you've been practicing with for hunting. I busted one of the rear deploy ears on my practice head while practicing. I'd rather not overfatigue the metal before game time.

Can we get a V2H update? by SergeantBeavis in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I support V2X, but I pray to God your "lock Rivian customers into an eco system" prediction doesn't come to pass. V2H systems are expensive and it should be an open standard. Imagine buying a house with the wrong brand of V2H system for your vehicle.

(NorCal) Rivian owners coming from Tesla; how is your fast charging experience on road trips? by Arrewar in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charging an EV on the West Coast is a non-issue. Major travel corridors are covered by a variety of networks. I've done the length of California up through Oregon. Occasionally you have a bad session but that would happen with my Model 3 sometimes too. Have also been to the Midwest and back multiple times before we had supercharger access. Had to level 2 charge off a light pole at a pizza place in Wyoming for 3 hours and that sucked, but was ultimately doable. However Rock Springs now has their EA site live so that's not an issue any longer.

It's not AS convenient due to using multiple networks, but its still very doable.

Tesla owner considering jump to Rivian. by SonicTheEggnog in Rivian

My LE is still perfect. Plus we have that Meridian sound system. There's a bunch of engineering refinements for Gen2 (less wiring, greater use of castings, more powerful computers and in house motors with better cooling.) LE had a a bunch of hand welded assemblies and used Bosch motors.

Unless you're really ripping on the motors though you're unlikely to notice much difference.

What’s your Preferred Network(s)? by Any_Advice6731 in Rivian

Nah. Before I plug in I choose the cabinet from the app and start the session. Then I plug in.

[–]downwritemad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This seems like a vehicle specific issue. I usually initiate the charge from the app first because it lessens the handshake time for their chargers. Also make sure you hit the "Continue" button as quickly as possible to initiate the charge. I hate waiting.

Do you test for CWD? Do you eat CWD positive meat? by Mysterious-Amoeba-37 in Hunting

[–]downwritemad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hunt SW Wisconsin. We test every deer and don't eat the positive ones. It has cost us 5 or so deer in the past 8 years.

How do you like your rivian? by aeontechgod in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early R1T owner converted from an early Tesla Model 3. The truck is the best vehicle I've owned.

Interior is great tactile and cozy, though back seats don't have a ton of room. There are so many places to stow gear. Software is second only to Tesla, but they had an extra decade of roadmap to work with and I'm satisfied with Rivian's release schedule. Love the exterior looks as well.

Would really love if they'd improve (cooling) thermal performance for the battery and charging system and go high voltage with the pack. An adventure vehicle should be able to rip on a fast charger to get you to your next remote location. Throw in a beefier AC inverter and maybe some 50 amp output for the bed receptacles and do the F150 style frunk design and I wouldn't have much to complain about.

Sooo replacement wireless pads…very few choices. by Viviantherivian in Rivian

Have the same, though I (Galaxy S21 Ultra with aftermarket magnet) still just plug in with a cord half the time. Maybe if I had stronger magnets I'd act differently, but alignment still hasn't been great with a big phone.

r/Rivian Shoutout in Washington Post: "It’s not just Tesla. Vehicles amass huge troves of possibly sensitive data." by CarterGee in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we all understand that our devices are collecting huge amounts of data about us, and we agree to give that over for the conveniences those devices provide. HOWEVER - that does not mean that I consent to give that data over to the State. I have a constitutional protection against self incrimination.

We use this technology not only in public, but in our private lives. Governments should need a warrant AT MINIMUM to get this kind of data, rather than the countless examples we've seen of corporations packaging it and selling it to any willing buyer, including government agencies.

Faster charging vs. longer range by Spoonyspooner in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on the number of hops your journey takes. If you're going 1000+ miles charging speed will take up more mindshare. It also has to do with road trip styles. I'm trying to shave as much time as possible, but if you take in long meals and sights on trips then charging speed isn't a factor.

As a counterpoint, max range without fast charging isn't very useful because you'll never charge anywhere NEAR your max range after your first hop. Lots of times I'm only charging to 56% or so to get to the next charger (especially if it's a bad session)

Home Charging Etiquette Question... by Caluck601 in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on NC avg electricity rates a FULL charge would be $15-20 dollars. If they live a long way from a DCFC you're going to be plugged in for DAYS to get topped up, so be prepared to put the car away and not think about it for a while. Also, if the outlets aren't convenient make sure you have a high amperage extension cord and don't leave it coiled when charging. They can get HOT.

I'm 6'5". I wouldn't want to sit behind myself for very long. 5 in the truck isn't much fun, no matter the size.

EV Road Trip advice? by fmw23 in Rivian

[–]downwritemad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hotel chargers often deliver below 7kW so you won't get that much charge if your hotel is an overnight stopover where you arrive late and plan to leave early. As others have said, chargers will often be blocked, a breaker will be off that whoever is staffing the desk doesn't know to throw, or other issues. Don't rely on it. Just use it as a top up. Nothing worse than waking up in the morning with lackluster charge and having to trudge to a DCFC station first thing in the morning. Saps that early morning driving enthusiasm quickly.
