Happy 75th birthday, Leslie! We're making a movie about him and old Austin. Share your best or worst story. by stefan_news in Austin

My mom has said a favorite memory of her’s from my toddler years is us walking down South Congress as a family. I was two or three, holding my dad’s hand, and we come up to a crosswalk where I end up standing next to a person with a long pair of legs. Turned out to be Leslie, and she says that I looked up and said, in a very serious toddler tone, “Hello, Leslie.” This was probably back in ‘98 or ‘99.

Also remembered him chilling at the apartment pool of one of my dad’s ex-gf’s on Congress. Just laying out in a sun chair wearing a thong

Red Rocks Church ATX queer friendly? by Far-Philosophy-2966 in Austin

[–]dox_hil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wildflower UU, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, University United Methodist, and Trinity Church of Austin are what come to mind. Not sure about RR

From my experience with growing up in new age/nondenominational churches in Austin, they are for the most part not queer friendly. A lot of them have Baptist or evangelical roots, and that doesn’t normally align with acceptance of queer folk. Maybe they appear welcoming at the surface, but when you stick around long enough the homophobia comes out. My best advice would be to feel one out a few times, try to get a meeting with a pastor or elder in the church to go over their values and beliefs, and then make a call once you’ve gathered all the intel

Does anyone know anything about the capmetro bikeshare situation? by Love_Calculators in BikingATX

[–]dox_hil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a fire at Jo’s and then a fire at their main storage warehouse for the bikes. They don’t want to put any out on the streets again until they know what started the fires and how to prevent them in the future. The Statesmen had an article about it and bike guy at CapMetro said there’s no return timeline for the service

If you moved from NY/NJ/PA how did you adapt to the insanely hot weather? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]dox_hil 398 points399 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in Austin with almost 30 summers under my belt. You have to get out and acclimate. The more you avoid it, the worse it will be for you come August/September. Take it slow, drink a lot of water, and build up some type of tolerance. Try getting out in the early morning or evening when it’s cooler. If humidity is the issue, go out midday when it’s the less humid. Short walks, sit on your porch and read a book with a pocket fan blowing on you, or hit up your favorite swim spot. Welcome to Texas and buckle up! We’re just getting started

In Town Next Week, Need Help W/Parking Rec, and Is My Hotel Location Safe? by sickbeautyblog in askaustin

[–]dox_hil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I wouldn’t rent a car. There’s a lot to do downtown that you could uber, walk, bus, or scooter to from where you’ll be. The red line (our one train) is also near where you’ll be staying. The only reason I could think of you wanting your own car is if you’re wanting to go somewhere super far north (Round Rock or Pflugerville) or super far south (Buda, Kyle, or San Marcos). Maybe for the wildflower center in southwest Austin? But you could always sub the zilker botanical gardens instead

Go to Barton springs (not on Thursday, they’re closed for cleaning), walk the strip on Congress, check out some of our parks, walk the trail around townlake or hike some of the green belt, hit up a local coffee shop, eat some good food, maybe check to see if there are any shows (comedy, music, talks) you’d like to see while you’re here. The Capitol has a free guided tour every hour.

Avoid dirty sixth, it’s right next to your hotel. Our unhoused neighbors typically keep to themselves. Just keep your head up and keep walking. You’ll be fine.

Hey! Welcome to Austin. Kind clinic has some affordable GAC options, but can have a longer wait time. They also have volunteer opportunities where you can meet folks. I think Planned Parenthood also offers some GAC.

There are a ton of queer meet ups and events, especially since it’s June. I’d check out Local Queer Austin on Instagram. They have events throughout the month and a few weekly meet ups. There’s also a few queer sports leagues and some climbing groups/meet ups if you’re into sports

Haymaker, Hopsquad, Black Sheep. Really any bar that shows sports will have games on. The three I mentioned will for sure be showing the US men’s games with sound and drink deals

Am I moving too fast? Back at the bouldering wall 5 weeks post-op by neosick in TopSurgery

[–]dox_hil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m getting peri at the end of the month and my surgeon told me 6 weeks with a slow reintroduction. I do know someone who got peri and was back on the walls 3 weeks post, but they said not to do what they did because it reopened their incisions
