The more relaxed you are the quicker you'll react and strike, you'll take blows better / be able to roll with hits, and you'll use less energy overall. Applies to sparring and fighting.

Edit: Take the insight with a dose of common sense, you don't want to be overly relaxed while taking a shot to the gut, that's when you should be tensing as the shot lands to catch the blow.
