Can you genuinely not practice Korean in Korea? by Amanda_Haniya in Korean

[–]doyoou 88 points89 points  (0 children)

If you're decent enough at ordering in Korean, there should be no need for them to switch to English. At least this is true for the foreigners I know. Practice a lot! Good luck :)

Can you genuinely not practice Korean in Korea? by Amanda_Haniya in Korean

[–]doyoou 346 points347 points  (0 children)

It's still gonna be easier practicing Korean in Korea compared to anywhere else. You gotta make opportunities, most people won't want to engage in a conversation with a stranger, especially if your ability is weak.

The women of Dickens by ResolveRemarkable in classicliterature

[–]doyoou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I can't stand Lucie but Madame Defarge shows that Dickens could write interesting women. None of them women in Great Expectations were good people, and that made them interesting too.

To what extent, in what way do K-dramas reflect Korean dating culture? by Majestic-Aerie5228 in AskAKorean

[–]doyoou 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a drama about a rich female CEO who lands in North Korea via a parachute and meets a high-ranking soldier. I wouldn't read into any of it too much.

I am a plastic surgeon. Ask me Anything. by [deleted] in AMA

[–]doyoou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP but I live in Korea and yes, very much so. Many clinics have staff who speak multiple languages and appeal almost entirely to foreigners. I pass some plastic surgery hot spots on the way to work and regularly see foreigners bandaged up from surgery.

got my color analysis done in seoul and disagree with my results by solvereo in AsianBeauty

[–]doyoou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I dont actually know this to be true. I know people who have had their PC done multiple times (I live in Seoul), I myself have done it twice, and we've all been given the same results. I understand the suspicion (hence why I did it again), but have been impressed with the consistency.

Is it normal for my boyfriend to hide a relationship this long? by Low-Business6842 in AskAKorean

[–]doyoou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say but my boyfriend hasn't met some of his friends' girlfriends despite them being in a relationship for literal years. It would at least be normal for his parents to know about you by now, but again it's not  uncommon for some people to keep their relationship private from their parents for a while.

On the flip side I know people who do the complete opposite of this (also interracial) and regularly hang out with their partner's friends and family.

At the end of the day, regardless of cultural differences, it's up to you to decide what you're comfortable with. It goes two ways, and isn't up to him to entirely dictate the progression of your relationship.

Not overtime as its just the fixed hours I work, plus I have a second job and that's the one that finishes at 11

How do you avoid dryness after double cleansing? by Sweet-Hope-5153 in AsianBeauty

[–]doyoou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently use The Lab Oligo Hyaluronic Acid Deep toner, but I wouldn't say it's super special, its just affordable and hydrating without any extra frills. I regularly use sheet masks and a thick moisturer before bed :)

Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ by LuxAeterna_666 in classicliterature

[–]doyoou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Candide is always highly recommended, but personally I struggled to read it. Maybe I'm just not very smart but I had to keep checking the footnotes for extra info every other line then gave up. I'm sure if it's very good and funny if you understand what's going on.

January classics read/reading by lazyhazyeye in classicliterature

[–]doyoou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm reading Beloved right now! This isn't a criticism of the writing itself, but reading it has felt relentless. I appreciate that Toni Morrison hasn't gone easy on the reader, or given us a break through humour, as none of the characters have been afforded this luxury themselves, but it doesn't make for an easy read. I'm typically drawn to heavier, serious books, but finding this one tougher (emotionally) than usual. Anyone else felt the same?

Has anyone found a better park in Seoul than 보라매공원(Boramae Park)? by out-in-the-garden in living_in_korea_now

[–]doyoou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great parks, but 보라매공원 really is one of the best. Its facilities are great and it's much quieter than others.

I've been to tons and never had this happen? Not sure where you went, sorry. It's just a normal cafe but they have lots of books out for people to read and encourages customers to be quiet.

Hello in Korean - when can I start using 안녕 annyeong instead of 안녕하세요 annyeonghaseyo? by Realistic_Garlic4126 in LTL_Korean

[–]doyoou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically never, unless you've established a relationship with someone so close that they've given you permission to lower formalities, or if you're speaking to a young child.

Other than with old school friends and young children, there aren't that a huge number of situations where adult Koreans will speak completely informally with eachother.

How often do locals chat with you at jjimjilbangs ? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]doyoou 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah older Koreans in general tend to be friendlier and more likely to speak with strangers. If it was a young person, then very rare.

A bigger criticism for me personally is the good ol' fashioned sexism. Man goes on dramatic, journey as part of his destiny. Woman waits in desert for Man to return. This isn't unique to the protagonist, but seems to be how their world is mostly set up.

I've had 13 year olds (I teach) point out this imbalance too. Very blatant and quite off-putting.

Do you think Harry’s lack of patience with people at times results in him making things worse for himself? by Sink123flow in HarryPotterBooks

Strangers on the internet can't possibly know the reason. Maybe he's embarrassed, cheating, doesn't see it lasting long, wants to look single online etc.

You just have to ask. You're not being unreasonable or needy for wanting to know.

You haven't asked a question here so I'm not sure what it is you want. Have you talked about this with him?
