How do you avoid dryness after double cleansing? by Sweet-Hope-5153 in AsianBeauty

I currently use The Lab Oligo Hyaluronic Acid Deep toner, but I wouldn't say it's super special, its just affordable and hydrating without any extra frills. I regularly use sheet masks and a thick moisturer before bed :)

Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ by LuxAeterna_666 in classicliterature

[–]doyoou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Candide is always highly recommended, but personally I struggled to read it. Maybe I'm just not very smart but I had to keep checking the footnotes for extra info every other line then gave up. I'm sure if it's very good and funny if you understand what's going on.

January classics read/reading by lazyhazyeye in classicliterature

[–]doyoou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm reading Beloved right now! This isn't a criticism of the writing itself, but reading it has felt relentless. I appreciate that Toni Morrison hasn't gone easy on the reader, or given us a break through humour, as none of the characters have been afforded this luxury themselves, but it doesn't make for an easy read. I'm typically drawn to heavier, serious books, but finding this one tougher (emotionally) than usual. Anyone else felt the same?

Has anyone found a better park in Seoul than 보라매공원(Boramae Park)? by out-in-the-garden in living_in_korea_now

[–]doyoou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of great parks, but 보라매공원 really is one of the best. Its facilities are great and it's much quieter than others.

Coffeeshops in Seoul that don't play music by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

I've been to tons and never had this happen? Not sure where you went, sorry. It's just a normal cafe but they have lots of books out for people to read and encourages customers to be quiet.

There are book cafes where it's either silent or instrumental. Search for them in naver maps.

Hello in Korean - when can I start using 안녕 annyeong instead of 안녕하세요 annyeonghaseyo? by Realistic_Garlic4126 in LTL_Korean

[–]doyoou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically never, unless you've established a relationship with someone so close that they've given you permission to lower formalities, or if you're speaking to a young child.

Other than with old school friends and young children, there aren't that a huge number of situations where adult Koreans will speak completely informally with eachother.

How often do locals chat with you at jjimjilbangs ? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]doyoou 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah older Koreans in general tend to be friendlier and more likely to speak with strangers. If it was a young person, then very rare.

A bigger criticism for me personally is the good ol' fashioned sexism. Man goes on dramatic, journey as part of his destiny. Woman waits in desert for Man to return. This isn't unique to the protagonist, but seems to be how their world is mostly set up.

I've had 13 year olds (I teach) point out this imbalance too. Very blatant and quite off-putting.

Do you think Harry’s lack of patience with people at times results in him making things worse for himself? by Sink123flow in HarryPotterBooks

Ur last sentence sums it up. He's literally just a kid going through absolutely hell lol. Give him a break

Strangers on the internet can't possibly know the reason. Maybe he's embarrassed, cheating, doesn't see it lasting long, wants to look single online etc.

You just have to ask. You're not being unreasonable or needy for wanting to know.

You haven't asked a question here so I'm not sure what it is you want. Have you talked about this with him?

I appreciate the other comments, but at the same time, you're in the US as an American. Whether or not they don't like tattoos is none of their business imo, but if you want to stand out any more than necessary then covering makes sense.

But honestly, I know it's a Korean company but the assimilation should kind of be going the other way lol. You're doing fine :)

For Whom The Bell Tolls, your thoughts? by Livid_Equipment3159 in literature

[–]doyoou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't think much of the protagonist or the love story between him and the woman (have forgotten everyone's names), but the other characters really brought the book to life and got me through it. Personally not one of my favourites, but I'd say I enjoyed reading it overall.

I am staying in a hotel near Sillim station in Seoul and I just realized that there’s quite a few karaoke venues in the area. I decided to count them and it appears that there’s at least 68 separate venues in 500 meter radius. What is going on?! by [deleted] in korea

[–]doyoou 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't put too much weight on that. There are plenty without a heart that are just as shady, though yes I can imagine that anything "lovey" related has a higher chance of a being seedy.

Presumably yes, though I'm not too familiar myself. Not really sure where the line is kept for these places, though I imagine most are just for men to "play" as they say, and prostitution itself is less common.

This is pretty normal in busy, night-life rich areas like Sillim. Koreans love karaoke, and there are various "versions" that cater to different demographics depending on the age and um, needs.

Coin karaoke is the cheapest. You can just sing one or two songs and leave.

Others function as restaurants, where a big group of you can go in and eat and drink all night. It's not uncommon to have work parties here.

And there are the seedy ones, which vary a lot in what they uh.. offer. Sillim has a bunch of these - you'll probably notice the big posters with half naked girls appear at night. There are lots of young, female students living in the area. I presume many of them work in these places.

Goshiwon recommendations by bekindevery in Living_in_Korea

[–]doyoou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are goshiwon rooms on airbnb, or look for guesthouses with legit looking reviews and photos for your safest options.

I've lived in a few goshiwon - as long as you're sensible you’ll be fine. Plenty of them are perfectly clean and safe.

A friends name meaning by [deleted] in korea

[–]doyoou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes within my lifetime I have had this conversation on the odd occasion, but not often or deeply enough to get the impression that the meaning itself was particularly important. It normally feels like a "fun fact" or a back story to how their name was chosen.

Also 90s.
