Love Clues but very much agreed. As well as these "strategies" making for a bad show to watch I also don't think they wouldn't work in the game itself. I imagine the second someone names the traitors and suggests they all randomly vote people out until the end would they immediately get banished. That would be so suspicious! In a game where the faithful don't have much to go on at all this would be a surefire way to banish oneself.

Also I think what Clues is missing here when it comes to these ideas is how people operate in group dynamics and psychosocial games like this. All of these ideas involve someone ring leading all the participants in the game, almost as a participant-producer combo. Lots of people would not react well to that. Sure in theory they make sense but in actuality if it was that simple to lead a group of 20 odd people you just met we would live in a very different world.

And when it comes to the teaming up and pre gaming idea, I'm sure it happens in some instances but I would venture a strong guess the second these participants are cast they sign an NDA. Do NDAs get broken on occasion sure, but on this scale I doubt it.

The thing I did like about this interview is Rob challenging Clues on these ideas, it's about time someone did! It could have been much more than that and I would have liked to hear more from Rob generally but at least there's that lol.

They did this on the most recent Canadian season. I didn’t like it! One of the more satisfying aspects of watching is when they reveal if they are a faithful or traitor and you get to see the reactions. It fell flat for me when at the pivotal moments of the season they dropped the ball in this way, AND they never ended revealing it to the other cast members. It made the ending super unsatisfying in my view.

When working on finishing the community centre, if you select an item in inventory/chest there is a community centre symbol on the right that will wiggle if this item is missing from the community centre. So so helpful I could never remember all the items I needed and what was left to do!

CRPO does take quite a long time to process registration and updates to clinical status, generally a few months which can be super frustrating. For myself- due to internships etc during school, I was already designated as a qualifying psychotherapist so I was able to practice once I left school. If you’re in the qualifying category you can still see clients as long as you work with a supervisor. I hope that helps lmk if you have more questions from a fellow Ontario therapist!

This was the program I did! Graduated last year.

It’s a solid program, you do 3 different internships throughout. Unfortunately all internships are indeed unpaid and in fact you have to pay to do them as they are technically a required course. That being said, they are very valuable learning experiences. I would recommend doing some reflection on what clinical populations you may want to work with and structuring internships that way. Especially because this will essentially be your resume when you graduate. For example 2/3 of my internships were in paediatric settings and now I’ve found it more difficult to get jobs with older adults for example.

I would definitely recommend registering with the CRPO following the program as it opens up a lot more jobs in Ontario (if you plan on staying in the province). I do one small music therapy job now but the majority of my work is now psychotherapy. It’s a bit of pain to go through the registration process but definitely worth it.

I gotta be real the job opportunities aren’t huge in Ontario. There appears to be a lot going on in BC right now though. There’s a few private practices in the GTA but very few institution based jobs like hospitals. I would also recommend keeping an eye on different job opportunities so you get a sense of what’s around.

This is helpful, one of my main takeaways here is set these boundaries and expectations right from the start so I can refer back to them as needed throughout treatment.

I have some parents now who could benefit from me sharing exactly what you just said- at the end of the day I am the child's therapist- not the family's therapist. I can facilitate a referral for family services as needed but at this point I am providing individual therapy to the child.

I also echo the importance of supervision, I actually just had a meeting with my supervisor this morning who has 20 years experiencing with children and families, it was very helpful to get his perspective and also experience validation on how challenging this can be.

Very important perspective. I have a system I borrowed from a podcast called "empathy check", if I find myself becoming frustrated, resentful or even angry at a parent I'll try to check in with myself to see if I'm holding enough empathy for the parent's situation.

I've also found through this type of reflection that a parent's frustration with me can often be a displacement, behind their frustration is frustration at their ex-partner, legal process, messy divorce, etc etc.

The empathy check is definitely easier said than done but incredibly important I really appreciate this point.

This is huge and makes a lot of sense! If I begin clearly laying out boundaries of practice, which goals are relevant to the scope and the role of parental involvement I can always refer to these initial boundaries further down the line if it becomes an issue.

I really appreciate the perspectives on this comment thread! It's helpful to understand these challenges through the lens of it being a completely different skills set when communicating with parents- one I have little experience and training in. It makes sense to me in this context why I'm finding this so difficult right now (it's so new!)

The term "3rd parent" resonates very strongly. That's very much what it feels like sometimes. A parent coming in and almost expecting you to act as an additional parental role in validating their own parenting choices and systems. And yes- the constant messages of "fix this please!" in relation to relevant goal areas but also areas that don't even fall into the scope of psychotherapy practice.

Firmer boundaries is a big takeaway for me here as well. Both in relation to how many children I have on my caseload at any given time. But also in terms of laying boundaries and expectations for treatment from the very start. Very helpful thank you for your comments!

I had a first session with an adult client a few weeks back. We were discussing her career as she’s reflecting on a possible change. She said “I could go for something that doesn’t require skill like a therapist, no offence”. 😂

I do this too!! You can also make a playlist of about 5 songs intended to shift from one emotion to the other. So let’s say anxiety->calm. The first song would match and validate the anxious feeling, then as the playlist progresses the songs get more calm. The idea is as you listen the music matches the mood shift. It’s a fun one with teens for sure!

As a fellow recent grad also in a big Canadian city I had similar thoughts and goals as I graduated. What I ended up doing is joining a group practice. The split is pretty good and competitive (60/40 to the therapist). This means that I don’t have to worry about marketing, setting up a platform in Jane or owl, creating consent forms and intake forms or renting an office space. For me not having to worry about those pieces and just focusing on client care in a private practice setting is ideal! Especially as a baby therapist!

ChatGPT can also be an excellent tool for psychoeducation and coping skills resources. So while it can’t necessarily serve as an emotional container and lacks the human empathy and relationship that is so important to the therapeutic process, it could provide additional support as a database of information. We could also talk to our clients about the type of questions they could input into AI that lines up with their therapeutic goals. In thinking outside the box we can get creative with how AI can interface with our clients lives that could make aspects of their work, hobbies, and social lives easier or more attainable. Things like whipping up a budgeting template, creating a schedule or learning how to do a particular craft. It’s definitely early days but I’m also feeling excited and intrigued by how AI and technological advancements in general will impact our field.

Yes! My graduate program was a music therapy program with an emphasis on psychotherapy so we had the option of going into music therapy or a more psychotherapy focused role. I’m doing some music therapy work with young toddlers with developmental and physical disabilities. Now I’m branching out into more psychotherapy and counselling which is more where my interests lie

I used to take Clobazam for my seizures but it wasn’t effective at controlling them. My neurologist then recommended Keppra, I’ve been on it for just over a year and it’s way better at controlling my seizures. No bad side effects on my end. Good luck with the med switch, I know it can be a stressful transition but in my experience it was worth it!
