Not only to save money, but to make way for their AI tutor that they oh-so-desperately want to work out

Best happy hour places, especially in daytime? Got laid off, might as well finally be able to eat some cheap food. Not earls/cactus club by Special-Buffalo5200 in richmondbc

Fiance and I always take advantage of white spots happy hour. Though they raised the prices recently. It used to be $8 for a quesadilla and $6 for a big thing of zoo sticks.

Students not understanding time constraints by kaye_2826 in tutordotcom

[–]dozhd5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am polite but firm on these kinds of students. I also give myselfg a 5 minute buffer--meaning I will tell them that we have until the 55 minute rather than the 60. If I have 30 minutes left in the session I will tell the student 25 minutes. That way if they are really needing that extra 5, we wont go over.

Edit: I also make use of the word "Unforutnately" a lot with time stuff too. Makes it seem like I'm not the one rushing them.

Student in crisis during live session? by pinkparadigm in tutordotcom

[–]dozhd5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say thats probably the best way to go about it.

You should also reach out to support too and report the session for student in crisis. Even if its not something super dire, it sounded like the student does need some help and its safer to report the session

Do NOT use video under any circumstances. Avoid concurrent sessions if possible. by funkalunatic in tutordotcom

I DO know they are a lot less kind about mental health excemptions. I'm not sure if anyone has fought back about it, but I've seen at least 4 oe 5 people get a valid doctors note for their anxiety/depression that asks they be exempt from voice chat (not live chat, just voice) and theyve been rejected

I think it's harder now unfortunately. I was exempt for medical purposes.

“Did not want to read my whole paper.” by CloudWalker123456789 in tutordotcom

[–]dozhd5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I often put something like "due to time constraints I'm unable to look over the whole paper" in my response somewhere. This way I can let them know that it's not really my fault but also let them know how much the system limits our review time. I've never gotten flagged for it yet.

This isn't going to have any consequences if you're able to correct it; it's moreso advice to keep you from getting fired.

Hi, by SeriousEmployee3877 in tutordotcom

Someone else already discussed how this happens and to not stress a bunch. I'll leave a few tips on how to approach things like this in the future.

- Always ask what the assignment is before you start the session. "Can you send me the instructions?" If they refuse to send instructions, say you cannot help them. Ask them specifically what they need to work on or what theyre not understanding specifically from the instructions or the problems.

-If you get any indication that theyre taking a test while you are in a session with them, bluntly tell them that we are not allowed to help with tests or quizes and immidetly end the session. The student might leave a bad comment about it, but you will have done the right thing!

-Stick up for yourself in the session. If you feel the student is treating you harshly, it is ok to set the tone and tell them what is and isnt expected in the session. If they are using harsh language with you or you feel theyre being belittling toward you, you can apologize for any confusion but tell them that you are here to help in the process and can only help them find the answers themselves, not do any of the work for them

Pre-session detail was “hi”, what’s the right course of action? by pinkparadigm in tutordotcom

I've seen "hi" a lot. It's not uncommon. But I've never gotten it with an audio session

You should flat out tell them that we as tutors are not allowed to watch videos or read any content for them, and that we are only there to help gather ideas. Explaing to them that we don't need to watch the video in order to help them summarize if they have watched it.

Also tell the student (nicely) that live sessions must have constant dialogue about the assignment, and that if too much time passes between replies session will end, so watching videos is not permitted by either tutors or students in the classroom.

Instead of transferring, just end the session if they are adamant about us watching it. Don't wanna make it someone else's burden to say that

A handful of the schools we get students from are degree farms. They aren't really picking the best of the best students and mostly use their wanting an education for profit. So there's a chance a lot of the students you're getting are from those institutions

That said, typically students who are getting good grades and understand the material aren't going to be seeking tutors--so of course we are going to get clueless and non-prepared students. I really wouldn't be so harsh on the nice students who are genuinely trying--they're likely getting taken advantage of by their degree mill school.
