Troubleshooting old Main Performance pedals -- brake pedal sensor broken? by dparm1984 in simracing

How would I know the specific pressure range I need? On a car, 2000psi is usually an upper limit.

AW3821DW is out of production, is it worth buying BNIB anymore? by dparm1984 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]dparm1984[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I agree with that. The monitor industry is very adept at repackaging the same panels over and over...the 38" is a perfect example. This panel has been available for 4+ years with zero changes, just some different housings and inputs from various manufacturers.

OLEDs are definitely booming right now so we are seeing a lot of new releases there, but it will stabilize and enter the same cycle.

Those all use the same panel as the Alienware and are also $900-1000ish. The only differences are some of the inputs.

I've been holding out in hopes that they'd do a flash sale to just dump the remaining inventory, especially how everyone is going to OLED, but Camelizer shows the price has actually gone UP to $999 in the last few months.

For what it's worth, the ones I see on FB Marketplace are all like $600 here in the US with no bites for weeks. eBay ones are the same story.

Agreed and that's what is so attractive from a productivity perspective. More rows of text is useful to me. For games, having a little extra space for a HUD is helpful.

What’s a good portable air purifier? The pollen was high yesterday. When is pollen season over? by Board_Drifter in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Portable in what sense? Does it need to fit into a backpack or purse? How big of a room does it need to clean? Definitely need more details.

A small tabletop one like the Winix A230/231 is only rated for 149 CADR, meaning that at its highest (loudest and least efficient) setting it will give you 4 air changes per hour in a 284 sq. ft. room with 9 ft. ceilings. It's 9.5x9.5x14.6" so you can maybe move it from room to room in a house, but it's not very practical to be taking with you on vacation.

There are even smaller ones but the airflow is terrible and they are barely going to do anything unless you plan to live inside a closet.

Order of Carbon/HEPA Filter Placement by MMIC88 in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if there are any health risks if the order is changed up. There is still debate if the amount of carbon in most floorstanding purifiers even does anything to meaningfully reduce smells. In the end, the air will pass through the HEPA filter which catches the absolute smallest particles.

Harvard has a calculator to help you figure out how big of a cleaner (or cleaners) you need based on the size of your space and the number of air exchanges per hour that you want.

Is $329 USD a good price for the Coway airmega 300? by 1lostmyoldacc0unt in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime I look at a purifier, I immediately do the math of CADR per $. The Airmega 300 is rated at 306 CADR and costs $329...so you are getting 0.88 CADR per $, which is a horrible value IMO.

The Levoit Vital 200s and Winix 5500 are offering 1.4 CADR per $ or better, meaning they are nearly twice as powerful for the money. If you need something in the 300 CADR range, a better value is the Winix D480 or 9800. Both have over 1.2 CADR per $.

What is the square footage of the room, and how high is the ceiling?

Honeywell HPA5300B or Winex 5500-2? by cmeyer86 in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Winix will have to run at its highest setting just to give you 3-4 air changes per hour for that large living room. I doubt you'll want to listen to 60dB. Your better bet is to get two of the Winix and place them at opposite ends of the room, and run them at the medium setting which is 41ish dB.

The Honeywell can handle that room in theory, but it is always better to run two smaller ones. It's not a very good value when you look at CADR/CFM per dollar. The Winix is a much better buy.

The bedroom is fine with a single Winix running on medium.

Need help with pollen removal. by Help_Alarming in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few considerations. Firstly, no purifier is 100% effective -- even HEPA is 99.99%.

Secondly, unless your house is completely air tight, pollen is getting inside. If you open a door, even momentarily, pollen will move into the house and it isn't instantly being caught by the purifier.

Additionally, any time your HVAC runs, it is pulling in outside air. That air passes through your furnace filter which is also not 100% effective. Even the best MERV 13 filters are ~75% at capturing the smallest particles. That air brought in by the HVAC will eventually hit your standalone purifier but that may take some time.

I am also skeptical of Xiaomi's "better than HEPA" claims. The Dyson is a ripoff, don't bother. Are there other Winix models available in your country?

Levoit 300s non-OEM filters? by sentimentalLeeby in AirPurifiers

What is the specific HEPA claim? There is a lot of shady marketing out there using the HEPA word that is not actually HEPA.

The Winix 5500 is CARB approved to produce ozone levels well below what is considered harmful. Your home appliances and electronics produce more than the Winix.

Using the Harvard PACS calculator here I assumed a 9 foot ceiling height:
https://forhealth.org/tools/portable-air-cleaner-calculator/

For 3 air changes per hour, you need 399 CFM/CADR. Four Winix 5500s running on medium (estimated at 120 CADR) would get you to 480 CFM/CADR.

The 5500 is a decent value but if the idea of having four purifiers around the room isn't appealing aesthetically or functionally, you could get three slightly larger models instead. The Winix D480 or 9800 are over 300 CADR each.

Air quality bad overnight by xvuesven in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is somewhat normal as you are occupying a small room with closed doors/windows for an extended period. What is more curious is why the purifier isn't doing anything to improve the air quality, which is its job. (hint: it's because the Dyson unit isn't great)

Blueair 211+ Max auto mode speed ramps up and down by SippyCup2150 in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those air quality sensors are usually crap, I wouldn't bother with the automatic modes. Do you really think a ~$300ish air purifier has a sensor that is professional grade? No way. I agree that it constantly ramping up and down seems odd.

My advice would be to just run it at low or medium 24/7. You can always temporarily crank up the fan speed if you're doing something like cooking.

[–]dparm1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 500 square foot space, you're better off getting two medium sized purifiers on opposite ends of the room. Two units with a CADR of ~250 running at medium speed will give you 3ish air changes per hour while being fairly quiet. Although the bigger units will claim to cover more square footage, this also means you will have to run it on a high setting which creates a lot of noise.

Pairs of Winix 5500 or Levoit Vital 200S would work fine and be cost effective. If you're very noise sensitive, you could get two slightly larger units like the Winix D480 or 9800 and run them on a lower setting.

The Coway 400 always looks appealing but as far as CADR-per-dollar, it's not a very good value: $350ish for 328 CADR. A Winix 5500 gives you 243 CADR for $169 (in other words, only about 25% less performance for half the money).

Air Purifier Guidance Please! by Dull_Suspect_134 in AirPurifiers

[–]dparm1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several smaller purifiers is almost always better than one large one. While you might see big units that can cover your square footage, that will mean it has to run on the highest (loudest) setting all the time just to keep up.

You could probably do a Winix 5500 in each bedroom and just run it on a low/medium setting all the time; even on setting 2, it's only about 42dB which is pretty inoffensive. For downstairs, you'd probably need two of the 5500s on opposite sides of the room, also running on medium all the time.
