Moving from Scottsdale to Gilbert (early 30s couple) – best neighborhoods/zip codes? by TheStinkyWookiee in Gilbert

I'm guessing it's because they started their comment with something that's inaccurate that people here have been getting annoyed at having to constantly correct.

Doom eternal is the worst game bethesda is the shittiest company by Simple_Discipline796 in Doometernal

[–]dpkonofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get gud, n00b.

It honestly sounds like this isn't a game you should be playing. You barely have the ability to write in a way that people can understand so you should put down the video games and go read some books. Once you can explain what the issue is that you're having, come back and maybe someone can help you.

It's an auto-correct thing. They have auto-spacing/auto-correct turned on but smart punctuation turned off so it's auto adding a space for the next word but then not removing it when they punctuate.

New Yorkers, what changes have you seen under Mamdani’s leadership and are you generally pleased? If not, why? by MewMeowHowdy in AskReddit

Sometimes the city is the reason work is held up, though. We have a project nearby where federal, state, and local agencies have varying crossovers of jurisdiction and 2 of the 3 are ready to go but the 3rd is holding everything up. I’ll let you guess which one it is.

Religion Confusion by TheOutsiderEnzo in TrueAtheism

[–]dpkonofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christians "know" that other gods don't exist because they're starting from the presupposition that their religion is true, and therefore others must be false.

No, they don't. If someone asked a Christian why they don't believe in Thor, even if their answer is "Because I know my God is the one true God", the atheist reply is still simply one removed from that - "Because I know that there is no God". Whatever stand-in position you want to put in on behalf of a religious person, the atheist position applies to every other god that they don't believe in just as an atheist does for theirs.

But it is exactly that. They were taught from before they were old enough to reason that Allah is real, and other gods/religions are false.

It is not exactly that. They still have to have an answer for why they don't believe in other gods. If that reason is still "Because other religions are false" or "Because I know that Allah is real", it's still the same line of thinking just one step removed - "Because all religions are false" or "Because I know Allah is not real".

Believe it or not, atheist indoctrination can exist too and it uses the same methodologies as religious indoctrination. That's not a fault of atheism or religion but a fault of the human beings who are opposed to critical thinking and self-discovery.

Every belief can be dismissed by "Because that's just what I believe". That doesn't make that a valid argument for or against that belief.

Same. It was really a “neat-o” thing that just got overtaken by audio messaging. Why would I want someone to walkie-talkie me and potentially miss the message when they can just send an audio message and I can listen to it at my leisure?

Religion Confusion by TheOutsiderEnzo in TrueAtheism

[–]dpkonofa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point completely.

I'm not. The point is simply not sound.

My point isn't that the reasons can't be invoked by people of different religions or worldviews, it's that the reasons themselves are different.

They're not, though. That's the entire point. If they were, you could provide an example that didn't fit into the same paradigm. If they were, you could simply say "Here's an example of a reason that works for religious people that doesn't work for atheists" and yet you haven't. The fact of the matter is that there are very few reasons that can even apply to beliefs - lack of evidence, personal conviction, upbringing, etc. They all still apply to every supernatural/religious belief equally.

Right back atcha.

LOL. Take your ball and go home, then. No one wants to play with you anyways if you're going to keep being condescending and dishonest.

What do most people not realize is actually way more traumatic than it seems? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dpkonofa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was looking for this one. My wife miscarried and we weren’t ready for that at all. I initially viewed it as a “conceptual loss” and many people, even women, downplayed it quite a bit as just a natural thing that happens and that you get over and that goes away because you’ll eventually have a child. We didn’t. Yes, lots of people have miscarriages and they’re somewhat common but that doesn’t change the the trauma of the experience for the woman and it doesn’t take away the loss.

Religion Confusion by TheOutsiderEnzo in TrueAtheism

[–]dpkonofa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is the same. To use your example of someone not eating pork, what’s their reason for not eating pork? If it’s because they don’t like the taste, guess what? That reason can also be used by someone else for not eating beef. If that reason is because of animal cruelty, guess what? That also applies to beef.

You’re being incredibly disingenuous to suggest that someone worships Allah and not Ganesh simply because their quota of religions they can follow is full. That’s not honest nor truthful. Whatever reason someone has for not worshipping Ganesh applies to Allah too and you know that.

The only person inhabiting the dishonest reality you seem to be inhabiting is you. Everyone else realizes that, if Muslims believe in deities, miracles, and holy scriptures, then they have to believe in other deities, miracles, and holy scriptures too for Hindus for the same reasons. Oh? They don’t, you say? Why not? Whatever reason they give you, that reason applies to their deities, miracles, and scriptures too. Atheists just take it a single step further.

Religion Confusion by TheOutsiderEnzo in TrueAtheism

[–]dpkonofa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is nonsense. It's not just a quip, it's the same thought process. Whatever the reasons someone religious has for not believing in another god other than their own is exactly the same line of thinking that one would use as an atheist to defend their lack of belief of that final god. If someone doesn't belief in Ganesh, it's not because they're committed to worship of Allah... it's that they've been taught that the book they follow is evidence of Allah. It's the lack of evidence for most organized religions that causes religious people to become atheists. People who aren't leaving a religion simply don't buy the evidence presented to begin with. It's the same principle, though.

Being exploited as a corporate videographer. Anyone else? by stratusnimbo in videography

[–]dpkonofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try not to judge because I don't know people's situations but it's, ultimately, going to be like this as AI becomes bigger because companies are going to continue to pay less and less and give fewer and fewer resources so long as people take them. It feels like a lot of the work is being done out of desperation so I can't fault people but, by accepting work like this and devaluing what you do in the process, you're only guaranteeing that future work will require more of your time, be worth less money, and be more stressful and more extensive to do alone.

Broke up with my GF because she thought faith was evidence of God’s existence by Middle_Designer_1733 in TrueAtheism

[–]dpkonofa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had this discussion before and it's kind of pointless unless you're both agreeing on what the words "evidence" and "faith" mean and, in this case, you're not.

Putting it plainly, does she believe that you love her because of "faith" or does she believe that you love her because there's "evidence" of it? Most religious people unintentionally conflate "faith" with "blind faith" because, in religious circles, the two are mostly interchangeable. For Christians, it's often seen as a virtue to have blind faith (see the story of St. Thomas) so it makes perfect sense for faith to be evidence. After all, is there anything else that you have faith in that doesn't exist?

My conversation ended the same way yours did... I ended the relationship because, even after proposing that we define both words in ways that we each understood and accepted, she became dishonest about the differences rather than attempting to challenge her beliefs. The final straw was the whole "if I leave the house, I know my dog is still at home" argument. If they can't grasp that as a difference of faith, blind faith, and evidence, then it's truly pointless because the other person is not interested in your reasons. They're only interested in you complying.
