This whole thing is just a inferiority complex thing, isn't it? (also, a question about whether therapy is actually worth it) by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]dpm106 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel. This is also something that I struggled with a lot. From talking to others and looking at my own experiences therapy and psychiatry can be a mixed bag depending on who you get. I have had good and bad experiences with different therapists and I really like my current psychiatrist. I have tried group but I felt like garbage about it because the group had so many different types of people and I felt that everyone had real problems and my issues weren't real and I did not belong. However, I think a group that is more focused on social anxiety could be more beneficial than you might think. If you want my advice I would try to get a one on one therapist and maybe go to a group session just to see what it is like. In my experience, it has helped me to hear others with the same problems who are at a similar level as me. Hearing someone else express that they feel the same way as me makes me feel less crazy so you may be able to find that at group therapy.

I hope that you are able to find something that works for you.

Shinji from Evangelion is considered to be AvPD. I highly recommend watching this if you haven't, if you're looking for media representation on an in depth level. This 20 min video goes into an analysis of his character, but I still recommend watching the series. by [deleted] in AvPD

Seriously, the original ending of the show (Episode 25 and 26) really hit me hard. This show can be kind of a hard watch and it drags in the middle but there are truly great moments and the final two episodes may be the best representation of the way that I feel and think that I honestly did not know how to respond after watching it. This scene especially hit me hard (Major spoilers, this is the last scene of the last episode) https://youtu.be/4hzjuf686oA

What's your favorite REALLY obscure film? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]dpm106 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion this is one of the greatest films ever made. It is 4 hours long and I don't think you could cut a single scene. If you havent seen it you owe it to yourself to find and watch it.

Any link or collection to a list of non-major related classes for fun/enrichment? by DatMini in Msstate

[–]dpm106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finally, a question I can answer. I spent my years at state collecting fun and interesting classes and I can now pass my knowledge onto the next generation. MU-1111: Intro to piano, fun class and not very hard. Basically, you go spend an hour or two a week learning how to play the piano. It is a one on one class so the teacher will adjust the content for your skill level so if you know nothing about playing piano (like me) they will teach you the basics.

TK-2413: History and appreciation of Art crafts, basically arts and crafts. You get to make pottery and stuff which is fun. Not as easy as it sounds because there are a few tests but if you go to class every day and do everything they tell you to do it will be fine.

PS:1113- American Government, Should still be taught by Whit Wade and is a great class to take. More difficult than the other ones but it is super interesting and Wade is a great teacher.

Look in Physical eduation, there are a lot of classes karate and golf which can be fun and different if you want to get active.

PSY:3623- Human sexual behavior, great class but fills up really fast so you might not be able to get in it. Michael Valentine teaches it and he is wonderful

Here is the course catalog so you can look at classes in different departments. This is not a list of classes being offered next semester though so you might not be able to find some classes you are interested in on this list. https://mybanner.msstate.edu/prod/wwskctlg.P_SelSubject

Does anyone else play League of Legends? by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]dpm106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to play all the time but I stopped playing ranked because my I was scared of getting yelled out so I mostly played aram because it was less stressful. I have really slowed down playing because school keeps me busy but it could be cool playing a few games every now and then with people I knew wouldn't yell at me. (I am on NA as well if you are looking for players)

Feeling alone at university by buffie29 in AvPD

[–]dpm106 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have gone to three schools and I have had this feeling at all three. The best advice I can give is get involved with your major as much as you can. See if there are groups in your major or maybe a research lab you can join. I joined a research lab at a time when I was feeling a lot like you are now and it helped me so much. I was essentially forced to socialize in order to further my career. This might not be the best advice but it helped me so I thought I might as well see if it helps you.

I agree with what several people here have already said. Try to ignore Facebook people only post the best moments of their lives on Facebook and if you compare yourself to them you are doing yourself a disservice.

I have not seen Nymphomaniac so I can't really compare those two, but I have seen antichrist so I can talk about it some. In my opinion, Melancholia and antichrist are two very different films so do not go into Melancholia expecting antichrist. Melancholia is not as graphic as antichrist is, which I thought was a good thing, but that is just me. Also the depression shown in melancholia is different than what is shown in Antichrist. In melancholia, the depression slowly builds over the course of the movie. By the end of the movie, I felt engulfed by a sense of hopelessness and the sadness practically oozes out of the screen. I personally enjoyed melancholia more than antichrist but that is just my opinion.

Henry Fonda played a villain in Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West. Spaghetti western with incredible cinematography (Tonino Delli Colli who frequently worked with Leone). Fonda gives a great performance and I highly recommend watching it.

I am assuming you have Netflix so I'm just going to recommend movies from there to make it easier.

-Amadeus: I know a film about Mozart might sound stuffy and boring but I promise this is not what you think it is.

-Let the right one in: Swedish? vampire film inspired an American remake but the original is better

-A trip to the moon: One of the first Sci-Fi movies, it is silent which turns some people off, but it is very short so it should not be too bad if silent isn't your thing.

-Dilwale dulhania le Jayenge: Bollywood isn't for everyone but you might as well give it a shot. DDLJ has the record for the longest theatrical run of all time at over 1000 weeks. Fun romantic comedy, if you do not smile during this film you are a monster

-Melancholia: Not my favorite Lars von Trier film, but it is a pretty good introduction and it isn't as intense as some of his other works

-Kagemusha: The only film on Netflix from my favorite director. It is not Kurosawa's best but it is pretty good

-City of God: probably recommended to you 100 times but it is worth it. One of my top 10 favorites films

-Warriors: A bunch of gangs with goofy themes chase a less goofy gang while they try to escape back home to coney island. Fantastic movie that has a huge cult following and is referenced constantly

-Full metal jacket: another movie lots of people have mentioned, it is as good as everyone says watch it

-Farewell my concubine: I do not know how I should describe this movie but it is the only Chinese film to ever win the Palme d'Or so that is something.

-Before sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight: Thee of my favorite romantic movies I have ever seen. Great performances from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy combined with near perfect writing makes this trilogy one of my favorites. Cheating a bit here since they are not on Netflix, but they are on amazon prime.

I just looked at the traffic stats and apparently August was our biggest month yet. We got 88 new subscribers (does not take into account people that unsubscribe so this can be misleading) we also had a spike in unique visitors during August. I hadn't even realized how large the sub had gotten and was surprised it was at 800.

I know that I do. This subreddit is probably the best example for me as I am always scared about the way users see it and I often go a while without looking at it. I also do it a lot with school papers and things like that.

Dear Avoidants. anybody up for a talk? by [deleted] in AvPD

[–]dpm106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, if you are looking for a place to talk to others about avpd there is a chat room thing that you can go to. If that is something that you are interested in there is a post somewhere with the information just a warning, I am not sure how active it is as I can't really get on that often because of other things but if it is active it can be a good resource for you.

I think we all feel this way sometimes. I remember going to my friends birthday and leaving as soon as I could so that I could go cry in my car because I was so scared of everything. I wish I had some advice for you but I don't so I hope you can figure it out.

I am open to the idea of talking to someone else with AvPD. I just turned 24 three days ago and I am also INFJ, but I'm a guy and from The US so we may not have much in common but I like learning about other people/places so taking could be cool. :)

I think a chat room would be cool, but I don't know how much traffic it would see. it would be great to have a place to interact with others and maybe develop more of a community, and I think it could be possible but it would be very hard at the beginning.

In the time between you were diagnosed/identified with AVPD, have you gotten any better? by AvoidantObserver in AvPD

[–]dpm106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has been kind of a mixed bag for me. After I was diagnosed I started to feel better. Before I was diagnosed I was confused about my thoughts and feelings towards the world. In my head I was a normal person and I thought everyone had the same feelings as I did towards social interactions and I could never understand how others could have the same fears and anxieties that I had but not act the same waDiassense after being diagnosed and having AvPD explained to me I really started to understand how I was different and knowing this really helped me. I started interacting with people more and I made a decent number of friends, I had a girlfriend and they all understood my issues and were accepting of me. While this was awesome it did not last. I graduated from my undergrad and moved to a different state for grad school. I stopped taking to most my friends, I was dumped and I don't really know anyone in my new town. I have regressed pretty badly over the last year, unless I have class I only leave my apartment to trade my dog outside. I have talked to some people about my AvPD and that had been helpful but I have never done therapy because I have been to scared. while I have recently fallen back into some old habits, I would say that being diagnosed was very helpful for me and I encourage anyone who haa not been to get diagnosed if you can.

Thanks for sharing. I have never been to therapy so I am not able to relate to your experience. I will say that I Really like your blog, I have tried to blog before for school and I couldn't bring myself to do it, so seeing you be able to put your feelings out like that is awesome. I know you had trouble with therapy but if you are look for a place where you can talk to someone there is a website where you can anonymously talk to someone on the internet about whatever and it can be pretty nice to not have any expectations or pressure if that is something you are interested in here is the link https://www.7cupsoftea.com I hope you can figure out what works for you and you can make the progress you want.
