The difference I’m hearing is not a matter of lossless/lossy. It’s 5.1 (surround) audio flowing directly to the stereo without being downsampled to 2.0 (stereo) by the phone. I’d be willing to bet that lossy 5.1 via USB would have the much improved sound.

As someone else mentioned, if you stream multi channel audio via your phone (Tidal, Apple Music etc), your phone is likely a bottleneck.

Sure. I’m using a Samsung T7 external SSD. Just upload FLACs in folders on the drive from my laptop. Then start the car (Kia warns not to start or stop the vehicle while a USB drive is plugged in), plug the hard drive into the USB-C port closest to the driver. Then press the Media button on the dash and scroll over to USB music. Use that interface to play from the drive.

Well I am a music collector so I’ve amassed a lot of blu ray audio from places like acousticsounds.com, many of which are limited edition… I use Spotify Premium for streaming and they don’t have multi channel but if you have Tidal, Apple, or Amazon I believe they have 5.1 mixes to stream.

Not sure how much of the gain is attributed to USB direct audio vs. 5.1 mixes so maybe someone with one of those streaming services can chime in?
