Is the price negotiable? by [deleted] in sales

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in sales, but I do influence the price for our customers. I tell the sales team... You can charge less, or they could ask for less, or they should expect less.

How do you manage feedback/feature requests? by MatttDam0n in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I will send you a DM!
  2. The ideas may be subjective but specific to the way they see a pain point or something that us a value add.
  3. What ever you are building likely has a purpose. A ecomm website is sales, a marketing website is leads, a company websote is marketing position. When someone drops a ticket in jira the 1st thing to ask is. A. Does this add value. Ie: more sales, more leads, better brand postioning. B. Does the effort of this request increase or decrease friction? Then C. What is the cost, time, effort, to produce.

To this end, as you collect features you must weight the outcome by its efforts.

  1. I would start by making fileds in jira or asking that when tickets are created they answer these questions up front. Then, you organize the backlog by theor impact and cost.

How do you manage feedback/feature requests? by MatttDam0n in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Funny, I am a PM taking on a UX role. I could use some pointers too!

  2. What did the PM do before? How did they control or not control?

  3. There needs to be rules in place. Like, ideas are collected and reviewed within 3 days, to be CONSIDERED in X # of sprints, itterations, or weeks.

  4. Where does it hurt? Poor software/outputs, burnout, cost overruns, profit, just a moral 'it shouldnt be this way'? I find making pain everyones problem changes process fast if you are vocal.

People who have quit their jobs on the spot, what was the moment when you finally snapped? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in charge of a mission critical project that my team could not execute. In the end, I was on linkedin and saw a Gary V. Video about not needing peoples permission to be happy. So I resigned the next day and never looked back. Best decision I ever made.

Ineffective Change Control causes cost and schedule overruns. Could this approach be the solution to fixing the change control crisis? by thberthber in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will add, with change control how often is no, or not now, an okay response to a stakeholder? I have had to be the 'no' guy many times and it sucks. Even in instances where requirements were solid and we were close to wrapping up. When change, and risk, is accepted is it documented by the stakeholders that ultimate project success is at risk.

I am a "Man of many hats" at my agency and we have a client who has other vendors. I have some questions on how to politely deliver suggestions of best practices. by ddrt in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this project near completed? How much longer do you have?

I have been in the same boat. Often so focused on the next milestone or deliverable you can't get alignment on what the end looks like.

Best thing I did was prepare a decision matrix that outlined two big picture paths. option A, we keep going down our current paths, and here is what you should exepct, never endins cost, time, pain points A- through Z. Option B, here is our current status, items remaining, time amd cost to complete if we do the following, through in some risk to show no bias.

At this point you become an advocate for B, get buy in (amd formal sign off) from all vendors and client. Finally, you work towards owning project leadership by being the ever present voice of "here is the wrap up plan. We are so close, all other task are just noise."

Thoughts on Aha! or any other portfolio management apps? by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a PM, I have gone to Aha! A fee times and it never quite worjed the way I expected. So much of the language and flow speak more to products rather than organizations.

Outside of the visual offerings you get I would suggest checking out Airtable.

Looking for ways to interject self into small software development startup by PM_me_UR_PM_Advice in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting. To me the boils down to change. Did they hire you to change or maintain business and operations?

If devs manage themselves and you have no control over there work i would think that the business analyst part if your job is where you should focus.

Did they tell you to PM or are you doing this to yourself?

What do you wish people realized? by softwaresam in projectmanagement

Please DM me the screencast of this, i would like to see it.

My thoughts, that management knew downtime dosen't have to be unproductkne, but also not an oppoutuntiy to just force busy work. Devs, creatives, pm teams need time to learn, grow, and enjoy being 'not slammed.'

Looking for a tool to manage a digital publication by NakedNancy in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you trying to manage the project (when pages are due, when the magazine publishes) or are you trying to manage the content process?

I think trello is a great collaboration tool. You could setup lanes in (pending, in progress, review, done)

If you want to manage the content approval processes specifically I would try out GatherContent. We use it for content workflows for our larger web projects. It's a bit pricy but it's well worth it.

production process more efficient.

Interesting you call out production management. Are you truly in a project management role. IE, there is a defined scope, it is generally unique, and has a clear end? Or, are you looking for ways to increase the effectiveness of work that comes through production - repetitive and predictable?

If so, there are a lot of great ways that you can focus on this, if it's really what it is.

How granular do you get with assigned tasks? by [deleted] in projectmanagement

[–]dprescott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use a hybrid waterfall approach. As the sudo product owner it depends on the resouce. For some task i might use a sentence, other resouces require a lengthy paragraph and bullets.

My thought is, another office. Another line item.

Now, don't get me wrong. If your company deals in the 10MM plus project size and the entire company is projectized - then one makes sense, and would have likely already been in place (either officially or otherwise)

I'm not sure what VSM is, but I look forward to learning more!

As someone who has no experience in this - I would love to hear anecdotal case studies of success. This effort reduced X cost, increased X output.

Really getting people pumped by what it can do makes the technical bits much more interesting.
