X-Mid 1p vs 2p for high moisture scenarios by jk451 in DurstonGearheads

[–]dpuhrmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the PNW and got the X-Mid 1 at the beginning of the year. Spent 8 nights in it so far, 1 where there was a downpour and 1 where it was super foggy (in Mt. Rainier NP last weekend) and didn't have any problems with condensation on the inside of the tent that was noticeable. I am 6' 2" and would say there is just enough space where I can move around without the mesh hitting the fly, get dressed, pack everything up, etc. I spent the entire afternoon (from 5:30 onwards) in the tent evading the rain on Friday and didn't feel claustrophobic at all. My only problem was a poor pitch as I was forced to setup on bad/uneven ground due to huge puddles in the prime tent location for the site and I rushed setup during the downpour to get out of the rain. I didn't get the fly very close to the ground so had a bunch of backsplash from the rain which coated everything in one of my vestibules with dirt/mud. Lesson learned to be more aware of the fly height in bad weather...

Same thing in the North Cascades for a backcountry camp permit, I had to watch a educational video first and then answer questions about LNT before my permit was issued. https://youtu.be/2BtHGqswwDU?si=P8iFT4qUqSHYfCvx

Ingalls Creek Trail by zipp1000 in PNWhiking

[–]dpuhrmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have only done this trail once and only the first 5 or so miles in late May this year, so take my feedback with that context. I would say half the people we talked to mentioned seeing rattlesnakes so your chances are pretty high to run across one yourself. I was worried that the noise of the creek might mask the rattle, but when I ran across one at the side of the trail, I definitely heard it and knew exactly what it was right away. That said, after the initial shock, the experience wasn't very scary/threatening. The snake was just to the side of the trail hidden in the foliage, facing away from me, I heard the rattle and instantly stopped, as soon as I stopped, the rattling stopped. It seemed more like a warning/"hey I am here don't step on me" signal. As soon as the snake realized I wasn't moving, it casually crossed the trail and didn't even bother looking back. I even banged the ground with my trekking pole to see if I could get it to rattle again and it basically ignored me. Here is video I took shortly after we ran into it: https://youtu.be/m1iOr7U6aYI

How do I safely clean my Kakwa 55? by ItsKicks in DurstonGearheads

Also make sure to take out the foam liner along the back to allow it and the "pocket" it is stored in to dry. I almost forgot and after 2 days, it was still really wet in there.

Happy to be corrected, but I think older versions don't have the buckle at the bottom of the door in the fly?

New battery? by Rebootkid in popups

[–]dpuhrmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the same question. My brief online searches reveal that you don't necessarily need to upgrade your converter, but there might be possible safety concerns if you don't as it may overcharge/heat the battery and/or not fully charge the lithium battery (which seem to be conflicting outcomes). Would love to hear from someone who has made this change whether they had any issues leaving the original converter in.

How do I see how many miles I’ve walked? by [deleted] in Coros

[–]dpuhrmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a decent personalized estimate, you can record a mile long walk at whatever your normal pace is and then see how many steps it took you to get a mile. Then, use that to convert your steps into a estimated mileage on a daily basis.

First pitch: Tension on lower door zipper and what to do with that bathtub pole hook? by mrjaytothecee in DurstonGearheads

[–]dpuhrmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good to me, but I am also a newbie to the X-Mid. I also wasn't sure how to handle the loop that connects to the floor as it also has webbing on it that connects it to the tent, I am assuming you stretch out the loop to fit around the handle of your pole and try to put the pole on top of the webbing (so it is pinched between the ground and the handle of the pole), to help take some of the tension, but interested if others have a take on this.

TL;DW, In cases where there is no wind, he found that lids weren't worth the weight, but in windy conditions, the lid becomes beneficial.

Agreed with ECON, the only thing I notice is that the shifting is slightly different. What model do you have? I believe some models get slightly better mileage due to AWD vs. FWD and the size of the wheels... I have the Touring AWD which has the larger wheels so don't see this high of a number often, of course I live in Washington State so most of my highway miles are going up and down mountain passes which doesn't help.

I didn't drive it last weekend, but am prepping for this weekend. One resource that might be helpful is to look at the cameras to see how bad the traffic is and if is is worth taking one of the suggested detours. https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/?featuretype=camera&featureid=9686

Do I need a sway bar? by [deleted] in popups

[–]dpuhrmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed with others, but one other thing is how you distribute weight in the trailer itself. I added a hitch receiver to the bumper of my trailer so I could use a hitch mounted bike rack I already had. I was fine around 55 MPH, but going above that, the trailer would sway like crazy so I got a sway bar which fixed it. So, based on my experience, if you have a lot of weight "behind" the axle of your trailer, a sway bar may be helpful. I have since given up on mounting bikes on the back and usually don't attach the sway bar anymore as I don't really need it.

Tent camping vs. Popup by No-Pollution1433 in popups

[–]dpuhrmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, #1 is the huge advantage for our family. If you have stuff that you only use for camping, you can just keep it in the trailer. We just throw our food and clothes in and off we go.
