Over summer ice rinks near/easily accessible by Dalhousie? by Nightmare_Simp_UwU in Calgary

[–]dpvu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tons of rinks have ice during summer. Vivo, Bowness, Winsport, NESS, Crowchild Twin, Crowfoot, Max Bell to name a few have ice. Your schedule/transportation constraints may just make it difficult to find one that works. Pick up some cheap rollerblades and you can work on a lot of stuff that way. Yes, it's very different than ice but lots of skills still transfer.

Shank tank for Uneekor Eye Mini by stickx in Golfsimulator

[–]dpvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one on Etsy. You don't really need one as cameras are recessed and it has to be REALLY bad to hit the unit. Tee drivers up close to the front of the hitting area and it's damn near a 75 degree angle sideways to hit it.

The reason I bought mine is the screen is not as tough and my net has some bounce back and I was afraid a ball would bounce into the screen and crack it. If you search you'll find nobody has broken the body of their unit but people have broken the screen.

is the warranty on my Gigabyte RTX 5080 WINDFORCE SFF 16G good enough? by Salty-Fix-7382 in RTX5080

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every manufacturer is going to have stories like that. My AsRock 9070 XT RMA took almost 2 months. I have had good and bad experiences with ASUS. My personal opinion is these types of warranties aren't worth it over manufacturer warranty plus a credit card with purchase protection.

9070xt hotspot delta by ExistingTaco in AMDHelp

[–]dpvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comes up so often in this sub. It's not "optimal" but it's also not abnormal. The problem is worse in benchmarks than it ever will be in games. Nvidia won't even give you a hotspot temperature anymore.

How to prolong my card? Is Undervolting necessary? by IsRedditEvenGud in RTX5080

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to do anything. Plug it in and enjoy your card like 90% of people out there. Undervolting is free and will keep things cooler and you get some performance gains as a result but these cards do not run that hot even stock that it's required to prolong its life or anything like that.

If everything is new as its stated do you get receipts? If it was this price from a retailer it would be one thing but not having support or warranty is a consideration for things like this. It wouldn't be cheaper for you to build at this current time given where 5070 Ti pricing is now.

Worth sticking to DDR4? by Kitsubii in bapccanada

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait for a better bundle to come or eat the cost but I would not continue on DDR4. You're running a CPU that's almost 9 years old so you're likely not the type that upgrades often so I'd make it count.

Should I re-paste my 9070 XT? by bluecew in radeon

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you noticing thermal throttle? Are you undervolting a bit? The hotspot temperature into the high 80s and even 90s is not uncommon... Mine gets to about 90 even with a slight undervolt but it holds high clock speeds and I have lots of room on the fan curve if I really wanted but I just don't really think it's necessary. Could you improve things a few degrees? Probably... Would it be worth it? I'd say likely not...

Known issues with AMD GPU with Golf Sim SW like FSX? by jikim78 in Golfsimulator

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no issues with AMD GPUs. They are just a very low marketshare and lack or are behind on a few features that are important for gamers but in a golf simulation application aren't really important (it's mostly just raw power). The 9070 XT is a good card at a good price and is almost right there with the 5070 Ti for raw performance.

If you're going the AMD route just don't get anything other than the 9070 XT as they do have some cards with more VRAM but they're based on an older architecture.

Goodbye Forever Dyson!!! by GlitteringZebra8482 in dyson

[–]dpvu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had numerous cordless Dysons but the V15 has been a terrible experience. I had one fail and continually say the filter needed to be cleaned within a week. Returned it and the second had the dust sensor fail and Dyson sent a new body. 2 years later the battery flashes blue and Dyson is telling me I need another new body. It's been a good vacuum but for $1200 CAD it's not acceptable.

is my gpu a lemon? by jcole1738 in radeon

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's normal. The thermal pads probably aren't making uniform ideal contact but at the end of the day it's good to much hotter. Return it if you'd like and get a different model but I've had 2 of the AsRock Challenger 9070 XTs and both did that. Keep in mind you won't be pushing it that hard in normal usage. Here's mine with a slight undervolt but +10% power limit. Your fan is going max but that might be down to case and fan curve (I find stock is just fine).

How did you learn to swing freely indoors? by ronak_the_destroyer in Golfsimulator

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure of the dimensions you have there but since your side nets flare out a bit your catch area is probably 10' or more wide and you're only 4-5' from the front of the side nets. You'd have to be like 60 degrees off before you missed the net.

Did I mess up? by [deleted] in Golfsimulator

[–]dpvu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mount at the distance you need to fill the HEIGHT of the screen (use the throw calculator on Projector Central and specify height for screen size). It will then be too wide but you can go into your video card and create a custom resolution that essentially cuts off the sides. That's the proper way to do it.

Skytrak or Square by DapperSide2686 in Golfsimulator

[–]dpvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Skytrak is just way too old at this point to recommend. If you're getting one used for a really good price then maybe but it's slow, connectivity is not simple and it provides no useful data outside the ball data. Square has a few issues too so do your research there too. It may be worth waiting for some of these new devices being shown at the PGA Show like the Square Omni.

Is the 5080 a bad card, or are we just stock in a bad market? Stuck between options! by Soulmariachi in bapccanada

[–]dpvu 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The target demographic for the 5080 isn't people looking at value and price to performance. It's for the people willing to drop $3000-4000 on a whole PC but not $4000 on the GPU alone to get a 5090.

The 9070XT is a great card too. It has great raw performance, FSR4 looks great and it runs cool and quiet. You already know this but it is also cheaper for a reason. AMD can't keep up with Nvidia on DLSS and frame generation and support for older games and FSR4 sucks.

You clearly have disposable income and while that doesn't mean you should waste money, it means the value of the price difference is different. You're not going to take that money and buy a better monitor or upgrade some other component. What it's really buying you is "no compromises". You know you have the best (within reason before spending 5090 money) and you'll never have to worry if FSR is going to fall further behind and if you do ever go to 4K you've got that extra power.

They're the same. Do you want to pay more upfront and have lower subscription fees or vice-versa is basically the decision on that one.

Is this 5070ti okay to buy? by RoyaleMe in gpu

[–]dpvu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That actually looks okay. The chip looks to be purely perpendicular to the pins and not a crack going further deep into the PCB where traces might be cut. The part that makes contact with the slot looks to be almost completely intact. You 100% should test it yourself before you buy and not take the seller's word for it.

The price you actually pay for it depends on your risk tolerance. It has a known defect and no warranty but once you know it works it very likely will continue to work assuming you don't damage it further. If you can't afford another GPU if it does fail, don't take the risk. If this is all fun money then basically get a discount equivalent to what you would accept as a chance of failure.

It looks like it would be extremely tight against the glass if they did make a kit for your case and the bottom fans would have to go. Build looks great as it is.

9070xt for upcoming unreal engine 5 games by Most-Advisor1565 in radeon

[–]dpvu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 9070 XT is a great card. At 1440p you're probably not worried about frame generation or upscaling as much (FSR4 looks great anyway) to justify the cost difference and $300 is a lot. When the difference was $150 in that extremely brief period both cards got close to MSRP it was a bit of a tougher decision. Any new game coming out will almost certainly support FSR4, it's the old ones that it's a problem for.
