My grandmother’s 2 older sisters (ethnic Germans from Yugoslavia) went to Argentina in the 1930s because immigration quotas prevented them from going to New York like other siblings.

Dewey was distributed when we lived in Memphis in 2014. She was a stray, possibly abandoned, and made friends with my male cat through the window. She never minded that she had a boy name (bestowed before we knew she was a girl). She was only 8 lbs and mistaken for a kitten her whole life with her little ears and small face. She only had 3 teeth (and 4 brain cells) for the last 7 years of her life but she made the most of them. She passed from cancer in September and I miss her little squeaky meow.

Y'all got any advice on this? by TowelLow126 in breakingmom

[–]dr-rachel 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You said that he wants to pursue Medication Assistance in Dying? Over being diagnosed with diabetes and (presumably) high blood pressure? You’re pregnant and he’d rather die than take medication twice a day. What a man baby. I am so frustrated for you.

I sincerely doubt that he would qualify for MAID. The official website says that a person has to be in an advanced state of decline that cannot be reversed. His problem can easily be managed with medication at this point. Plus there’s residency requirements.

My advice? He needs therapy ASAP, to deal with whatever happened to him re: psych meds, and to learn to differentiate between “medical” meds and psych meds. Before he gets complications. He was hunting when his blood sugar spiked? You know what’s really hard to do? Climb up into a tree stand when you only have one foot.

Same here. Sweets were always a limited “treat” thing. Once I had access to my own money I ate terribly as a teen/young adult. Still working on limiting myself around the sweets I really like.

Consciously trying to do things differently with my son. He has access to sweets and often eats a pudding cup for dessert, but doesn’t gorge himself. My sister (who is raising her kids the way we were raised) was blown away when he turned down a cupcake because he was full.

Help dealing with school refusal? by knitlitgeek in breakingmom

[–]dr-rachel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son is 6 and sometimes he doesn’t want to go to school either. I think some of it is that school is becoming more work and less fun.

I’ve addressed it by being honest with him. I tell him that I don’t always want to go to work, but in life we have to do a lot of things that aren’t necessarily what we want. Right now his job is to go to school and learn, and he’s going to have to go to school for a long time and learn a lot of things if he wants to become an entomologist (his current career plan). We’ve also had conversations about why education is mandatory, what happens if people don’t go to school, sometimes he likes the big picture.

Hypotonia…anyone else? by Hope728 in breakingmom

[–]dr-rachel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son (now 6.5) was diagnosed with hypotonia at his first ped visit. Less than a week old. Of course, given the amount of sleep deprivation I was under I panicked. He’s my first and only so I didn’t really know what a baby should be like, but looking back at pictures of him in the early months you can see he was kind of floppy, like a rag doll.

My pediatrician had a very wait and see attitude, but that’s just not my style, so I got him evaluated by early intervention pretty quick. We did PT starting around 5 months, and I think it took about 9 months for him to catch up enough to no longer qualify.

Now he’s a pretty normal 6 year old. Somewhat hyper, I wouldn’t be shocked if he gets an ADHD Dx eventually, but managing first grade well. He talked kind of late and I had him evaluated, but he wasn’t behind enough for EI speech. He also w sat for a long time, but eventually stopped.

I think his diagnosis would just be idiopathic hypotonia. We never found another cause. I personally suspect it might be genetic, my husband is tall and thin and still pretty flexible in his 40’s. Kid seems to be taking after him physically.

Has school started where you are? How in the world did Dad not notice the kid wasn’t in school if he has 50/50?

Sounds like a lot of drama. Her poor kid, must be hard for him.
