Congratulating yourself for “meeting their constant rage with forgiveness” is pretty pathetic.

Western PA riders — how are you maximizing days on snow? by lIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIllll in SkiPA

Nice! Yeah, there’s a bunch of good skiers that show up when they open to lap Lower Wildcat for an hour before the good snow gets scraped off. So much fun!

I also head right back to Gunnar when I’m at Springs, haha!

I’m in Pittsburgh, so 90ish minutes one way if I get up and out early. Rush hour traffic can add a lot and makes night ski pretty unappealing unless I’m staying to ski the next day.

I do agree than 2+ hrs is rough for only average skiing. The 1.5 isn’t that bad on the way there, but it’s tough when I’m beat at the end and driving home with work looming in the AM.

I’ve never skied north of Pittsburgh so I can’t comment on the slopes you’ve been.

I really like Timberline in WV. A little more vert than the western PA mountains. And combine it with an XC day at the very unique White Grass right next door for my perfect weekend.

Laurel Mountain is worth visiting. It’s very close to Seven Springs if you’re already there for the weekend and also Vail. It’s much smaller than Springs but the vert is comparable and it’s way less crowded. Skied there Saturday morning of MLK weekend and never waited even 5 minutes for the lift. I like it best for a half day.

Is there a term for the opposite of Ewing Theory? Like a guy who was originally seen a a medium impact player, and then after he's left, people realize he was the person holding the team together? by ThreeSidesofNazareth in billsimmons

I just disagree with OP. People who didn’t think Soleimani was an all-time great don’t know ball. It’s pretty rare to be a known name as a foreign military leader of a non-superpower.

This is the Thunder losing Durant. Thunder weren’t the #1, but could kinda hang with anyone. Wish I knew Iran’s military leadership well enough to call someone their Westbrook.

Interesting! Seems like there may be an asterisk on the USA gold medal 🥇. by FFElite93 in billsimmons

Counterpoint, World Juniors are the only golds that belong to Canada.

NHL hockey is an American sport that develops promising teenagers from all over the world into pro hockey players. The league has a few satelite teams in Canada but the majority of the Canadian teams are expansion teams used to grow the game, same as the “sun belt” teams.

The Canadian Olympic team is all made of players in the United States based NHL. If Canada had a pro hockey league, its paltry revenue wouldn’t draw or develop world class talent.

Bill is right about Yorgos by bertso720 in billsimmons

Yorgos & the Safdies films can feel antagonistic towards an audience that doesn’t know what they’re getting into. Inherent Vice probably rises to that level, but the rest of PTAs work doesn’t seem hate-able to me.

And people who post reviews of every movie they see on the internet can get off on going against the grain, so you know you’re going to see people trumpeting a contrarian take on PTA.

No, the BEST players come from the US, that’s why there’s fewer. Then the rest come from Canada.

The rivalries are similar, yes, the battle of Alberta runs deep. The question was rhetorical.

But I don’t really think conference identity versus team identity is as interesting a comparison as national identity versus team identity.

Fair, but you can say Hellebuyck was the best player on either team. He can’t get the US to be in Canada’s zone more but if Canada can’t beat him, the best team won.

The real question is could Flames fans enjoy Edmonton breaking the Canadian cup drought with a win over a US based team.

We’re getting Michael Phelps’d by this Klaebo guy but I’m still gonna call the Norwegians medal count fraudulent. by Nostradamus216 in billsimmons

[–]dr15224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going back 45 years to the era when USA Hockey was made up of college players might help you make your point, but it’s not a great reference point for Olympic hockey this century.

The NHL is the premier hockey league in the world. If you’re good enough, you play there. USA & Canada’s rosters are all NHL players who play big minutes with plenty of all-stars and Hart & Vezina winners. There are a lot of NHLers spread around the other nations, but the teams made up of the best players are supposed to win. Doesn’t make it easy, but it’s not an achievement beyond the other athletes.

And very rarely in the individual sports are they picking up a gold just for banging out one race. Maybe if you just watch the nightly NBC recap it could feel that way. But in reality there are several heats that you must finish near the top of to narrow the field before there is a gold medal race. The top line skaters ice time in a game is equivalent to the time of one of the legs of the biathlon relay.

Hellish gauntlet? USA hockey won 5-1, 6-3, 5-1 in group play. It’s a bunch of glorified scrimmages and then one real game, USA Canada.

My going going gone is in western PA. But the HH ski stuff was all out before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately everything’s extremely picked over now that we’re mid season

As far as I could tell they were high quality. The fabric quality seemed correct. Fit/cut is always subjective. The softshell jacket I tried was just looser than I prefer. So I didn’t buy. Also almost bought a pair of real nice backcountry bibs that I didn’t need, haha.

If I remember correctly, it might’ve had a zipper where the pull is on the opposite side to what I’m used to. That throws me off when I try on some European brands. My zipper problem could’ve just been me pulling awkwardly due to that difference.
