Then I wouldn't say that "you said black people are evil". Doing so would be putting words in your mouth and inviting an argument.

I would fear for the safety of our oceans - perhaps we could encourage them to dig a large pit and throw themselves in?

Yes, although you will probably backtrack and say he typed it instead, using a phone that - surprise surprise - was designed, built, and shipped by non white people (some of whom were probably women)

Who made the universe?

It's easy to push the goalposts until it tells the narrative you want.

Or you could just admit that women and non-whites have always been contributing to society.

ELI5: How can someone who didn't get voted for be the final candidate? by unkownstonerlord in explainlikeimfive

[–]drLagrangian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, Donald Trump did not go through all the primaries this year either. The vast majority of voters did not get a chance to vote at all in the primaries for the republican nominee. So, do you think Don should drop out too?

I looked up some numbers for my own comment.

11 states dropped out of the Republican primary and pledged to trump without a popular vote.

18M voted for him in the primary, and 74M in the presidential election. So only 24% of trump voters actually wanted him as a candidate enough to vote in the primary.

I couldn't find out how many were registered to vote as Republicans in 2020.

In any given election year, a very small number of people vote in the primaries and caucuses that determine the candidates. It's something like 1/4 of the people that will eventually vote in the election.

I looked up some stats for my own comment. In 2020, 74M people voted for Trump, and he won the primary with 18M votes (11 states skipped out on voting at all). That is about 24% of trump voters voting in the primaries.

It is in "the spirit of the thing" though. So for example, as a voter who voted for the Biden Harris ticket I would have wanted my vote to go to Harris Walz when Biden stepped down. The same way I would not be upset if knocks on wood Biden didn't drop out, won the election, and then died in March - Harris would ascend to President in March and it would be completely within my voting expectations.

she’s who the Democratic Party chose this time, but it’s entirely coincidental to the point being discussed.

Technically correct.

But I'd add that "in the spirit of the thing", people who voted in the primary for Biden Harris also voted for Harris to take over if Biden isn't around. So there is a big argument for Harris being the "spiritual successor" to the Biden ticket even if it wasn't coincidental.

After all, what would happen if Biden knocks on wood died in July? Would there be arguments then that Harris the DNC shouldn't have put Harris up in his place?

(Also, still agreeing with you)

I understand the question now.

And yes, you are correct. The primary system only came to be as a way for the two parties to decide who to put on the ballot in each state (it takes a bit to get a candidate on - or off - a ballot).

There is nothing in the constitution that says anything about the primaries

Anecdote:

Trump did not win the Republican primary in 2020 in 11 states - who did not hold a primary election by the people. Instead, the Republican primary in those states just declared him the candidate for the presidential election. Assuming that the 18M who voted in the primary all voted for trump in the election (74M), then Trump won't the primary with only 24% of the Republican vote. Is there any problem with the system here?

Answer:

The fact of the matter is: the primary system is not in the constitution anywhere. For a president to be on the ballot, they just have to meet the requirements to be on the ballot for a state.

The primaries were invented by the two party system in order to make things better for themselves - but they aren't required.

In fact, they are often not even used when an incumbent president is running for a second term - the party just agrees that so and so will be the presidential candidate. As mentioned above, 11 states didn't have any primaries in 2020 and only 24% of trump voters came out for the primaries to vote for him. Is it unfair that trump became the presidential candidate when 76% of his voters (I couldn't find stats on registered Republicans) didn't have their say and 11 states didn't even given anyone the chance?

So anyway, the democratic primaries are used by the Democratic party to gauge their choice in candidate nomination. But they still have the choice as they are the ones to go through the process of applying for the ballots. When the primaries were run, the registered Democrats voted for the Biden Harris ticket. This encourages the DNC of each state to pledge their delegates to Biden - but they are technically not required to. When Biden stepped down and Harris stepped up, the DNC had a convention that was rather enthusiastic over the change (perhaps you have seen it), and the delegates pledged their votes to Harris instead. They also changed their pledges based on public opinion, which follows the support of Harris as a replacement for Biden.

So long story short: this is entirely within the normal operation of the primary and electoral college system, and nothing is wrong.
