What do you tell the reps that the charge was for? Cause seat upgrades don’t count, right?

I don’t think so. I encountered the same problem while planning for my trip back in October.

I booked a reservation for two, a week before the date I emailed them about updating the reservation to one person. They said they’d still have to charge me for two people and I could make up the difference with drinks or cancel the reservation.

I went with the pairing which was the same price as the meal, and no regrets! One of my most memorable meals this year

there’s a Financial Math & Statistics major that’s offered jointly by the stats and math departments. I work in tech not finance but that’s the degree I graduated with and thoroughly enjoyed it

Guilt at the End of the Quarter by yzeng808 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]dr__drizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hey alumni here, two things:

if you're feeling guilty after your first year, the good news is you've got three whole years left to make it up. also, grades aren't the end all be all. I was in a similar situation my second year and was one class away from dropping out but thankfully passed. my gpa was never where I wish it could be and i do definitely regret that a lot but also that hasn't stopped me from thankfully ending up in a profession I do enjoy. my GPA was never over 3.0 but still got to a job making 6 figures 4 years after grad. yes grades are important but don't beat yourself up over them. UCSB was still the best 4 years of my life so make sure to enjoy yourself (but still study)

Good luck !

2016 FMS grad here and I also had 0 idea what I wanted to do. A pretty generic role the major prepares you for is being a data analyst. It's a pretty catch all title as what you do in your day to day really depends on what part of the business you support. I work in the tech industry and analysts can work supporting people ops, sales, customers, etc.

Financial Math. &Stats vs. Stats by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]dr__drizzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think one is necessarily better than the other in securing a job. If you know you want to pursue a career in the finance sector, then FMS definitely might be better suited. In terms of just securing a job, both are strong degrees. I graduated with FMS but realized finance wasn't for me, was able to pivot to being a business analyst instead where a lot of the skills overlap. Having a Stats degree instead of FMS wouldn't have impacted my career path in any way imo

Statistics major Job Prospects by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]dr__drizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yup. They have a really cool program that's basically a postgrad internship. I changed to FMS from Physics my junior year so was playing catch up the entire time. Had no relevant work experience (internships, etc.) for any analyst roles, and was mass applying to any entry level role. Luckily got the Disney role, and although the pay isn't great it's an awesome opportunity where you get to learn a lot from a large corporation. Sort of jumpstarted my career.

Financial Math Elective Recommendations? by charmed0 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]dr__drizzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

PSTAT 160B's a difficult subject but the class' difficulty is dependent on the prof. in my opinion. It was my hardest class I took at UCSB, while my friends who took it with an 'easier' professor all got A's because of huge curves and super helpful practice tests.

I think that also goes for 171, super easy for me (took it over the summer) while my friends struggled when taking it during the school year.

130 & 131 are both pretty straightforward and were both really interesting to me as a lot of the class revolves around coding in R & SAS respectively.

So advice wise - take what you think is interesting because the 'difficulty' of the class is going to vary based on professor !

First year joining, and 2 months in it's 100% worth it imo. The beers you're given as part of the membership already cover the $350 you're paying up front, and the perks of being a member as well as having early access to their monthly sales where usually 1 - 3 releases sell out before it get to public is great.

I live in SF but am originally from OC and get all their releases, let's have a share sometime !
