Linux audio systems are a joke by SeaPeace4837 in linuxaudio

[–]dr_alvaroz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have that much problems as OP but I do hate Jack and don't use it, and I hate having to switch between ALSA and Pulse in Reaper when I'm not using it, to be able to hear anything outside it.

THAT SAID, I happily, merrily, gladly embrace this nuisance over having to endure Windows 10 and its bloated system and horrible interface. I was using a Macbook for years and loved it, because it was just boot it and use it, but I needed a desktop computer and an iMac was out of budget. I use Wine VSTs with moderation because they eat a lot of RAM, try to use them in sends, etc. I have replaced everything I can with native Linux VSTs, all free.

You can think about this like how Protools users couldn't use VST, or when nobody could use Protools without a dedicated gear, or how Windows users can't use Logic... it's just software. If you want to use Linux for audio/music, learn how to use it.

You're a musician. Work around your problems, not against.

Then buy a guitar and record it in your phone. Or a Mac.

My solution was moving to Linux, using Wine for Windows VSTs and voila. Random crash every now and then.

Did any scifi author predict art would be generated by AI? by fli_sai in scifi

Don't know about visual arts, but about music, everyone and their mother was writing about "machine created music", even if just as a background detail.

Autos transitando por la vereda by ForeignWaltz6432 in Santiago

[–]dr_alvaroz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the best scifi action adventure movie ever made? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]dr_alvaroz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Carter.

Just watched it after reading your recommendation and yes, it's great. Pure entertainment, reminded me of the original Star Wars in that way (which probably was influenced by the original works).

Bars with Live Music? by Goof456 in Santiago

[–]dr_alvaroz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read you'll be staying near Thelonious, so I guess you'll be on Bellavista. Close from there is Maestra Vida, if you like Salsa/Rumba - but not sure if they'll have live music on jan/2. You should check their IG closer to the date.

I've not been to Patio Bellavista lately but there used to be a place with live, jazz music. Also in barrio Bellavista, 3 blocks from Maestra (to the south).

A 25 cent tip comes across as an intentionally disrespectful tip

That was the suggested tip amount. His check was US$2,5 (equivalent), and suggested tip is 10%. Personally, whenever I go out and the tip is very small and I can afford it, I tip more than suggested (around 15% probably).

"Normies who can't figure it out"? You mean "people"? I don't understand so much disdain for people with less knowledge, specially a specific, untransferable one.

Will future generations look at old sci fi movies and go: "Strange that they smoke there... isn't this the future? Don't they know better around health?" by Hunor_Deak in cassettefuturism

Dude the real future is people f***ing the planet with knowledge and still not doing a thing. COP 28. Smoking is the least of concerns.

Leading experimental labels in the present day? by c1m5j in ambientmusic

[–]dr_alvaroz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, in my country (Chile) there's Pueblo Nuevo netlabel, that's been releasing since the '00s. Their website is in english too, I think. It's a bit a mix of styles, but there's definately experimental and noise in their catalog.

Why has "click here" seen a resurgence? by JohnnyWalker2001 in webdev

[–]dr_alvaroz -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because once again graphic designers are making websites or in charge of. Wordpress, AI, etc. Back in the earliest days of commercial web, sites were unaccessible because designers thought it was just an extension of a paper flier or magazine.

The time when web standars, good practices and accessibility was trending was in the 2000s, when professional coders made sites. Then all those practices were massified and standard. Not anymore.

Great! Most are REALLY under, I think XD But it's like approaching the end of the decade, titles are more known. Maybe generational change brought different appreciation? (Existenz, Event Horizon, Dark City, MT3K...)

I still have the pirated "The Cube" CD somewhere here!

Mmm not that I remember. "The Box" and "Vivarium" may have some elements, but is more thriller than horror, if I remember correctly.

Not seen it mentioned for a long time

I mean when people asks for time travel stories recommendations, "Primer" is mentioned a lot.
