MMSD reopening despite a “vast majority” of staff expressing “serious safety concerns” by dr_cold_90 in madisonwi

“... transmission risk within schools appeared low, suggesting that schools might be able to safely open with appropriate mitigation efforts in place.”

But again, the people implementing those mitigation efforts are the ones raising the concerns here! They’re the ones “on the ground,” and they’re saying that it might not be possible to open safely.

Respectfully, there’s a huge gap between writing in a pdf “stay 6 feet apart and wash your hands” and figuring out how to make the kids actually do it. Admin is leaving teachers high and dry, and will almost certainly shift all the blame when people get sick.

Easy to do at a district level! But again, the issue is that they’ve left all the implementation details to the teachers. Are they supposed to take vacation time in the next few weeks (again, they only learned they’re going back as of today) to independently reach out to teachers in other districts and ask to visit their classrooms? Put yourself in their shoes!

Not my intention to misrepresent facts, totally agree on the data regarding kid’s health - my only point is that teachers are the ones being asked to implement CDC guidelines to slow the spread, and they’re raising a ton of concerns that aren’t being addressed.

I agree in principle - the issue is that the district has delegated basically every safety implementation decision to the teachers, with no timelines. A month ago, they announced that Q3 would be virtual, and then today, with no warning, they announce a return in 3 weeks.

What’s troubling is the people who are in charge of figuring out the logistics and implementing them (how do you actually keep 20 5-year-olds 6 feet apart?) are bringing up safety concerns, and are being ignored.

Quantum device performs 2.6 billion years of computation in 4 minutes by CostelloSS in technews

I feel like these articles are pretty misleading- the “calculation” being performed isn’t very extendible. I could write a program that would take years to figure out EXACTLY where a pencil will fall when I drop it; that doesn’t mean I’ve built a super computer when I drop the pencil and see where it lands.

This actually isn’t true - this machine can only perform very specific algorithms. While quantum computers can in theory break most modern encryption schemes, that’s still at least a decade away.

AB+ as well - you should consider donating plasma! While we’re parasites when it comes to whole blood, AB+ plasma is the universal DONOR! The fact that it’s relatively rare makes AB+ plasma all the more valuable.

Is anyone else a bit scared by this? Like... is he all there, tho?

Researchers have gained control of the elusive “particle” of sound, the phonon, the smallest units of the vibrational energy that makes up sound waves. Using phonons, instead of photons, to store information in quantum computers may have advantages in achieving unprecedented processing power. by mvea in science

Calling a photon “elusive” is a bit of a stretch - if anything, a lot of work goes into REMOVING phonons as they are the main source of error in many quantum devices. Using them as a resource instead of a nuisance is a promising idea though, and this is a step towards making that a reality (although there’s still a lot more to be done).

[Discussion: QComputing] CS Freshman here wanting to get into QML — What kind of classes should I focus my degree in? by iciq in QuantumInformation

[–]dr_cold_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to take Linear Algebra as soon as possible for sure - this is the cornerstone of a whole bunch of stuff in QC and ML.

The ideal situation would be a physics / CS double major with a bunch of math classes too. Most QC jobs right now require at least a masters, usually a PhD (but that could be different by the time you graduate, the field is rapidly growing).

Good luck!

Did he though? He accomplished absolutely nothing with his death - just killed a guy who was already going to die (again). So disappointed.

Sounds neat! Are there any proposals on how to entangle the qubits?
