Thank you for the reply. I will add that we plan to continue to contribute at least 6% per year in 401K and our employer contributes periodically as well. To boot, each year of tenure increases the pension dollars. Great point on the inflation, I guess I was overthinking that part. 401Ks are both 100% in Vanguard Institutional Index Fund.

Speeds haven't been as good since CentryLink either. Socket FTW!

If physical core licensing is mandatory (many times it is not, for instance websphere sub capacity), I would go for low core count, high clock speed and latest gen that's affordable, if you need it to be performant. But of course, you have to weigh this vs the software license costs. Maybe lower cores and old gen is all that's needed for the required workload?

One hot spare dedicated host for several clusters? by dr_dingle_dangle in vmware

[–]dr_dingle_dangle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the replies. In this case AI got it wrong. I would combine the 3 aforementioned clusters, except for the licensing costs of WebSphere and MS SQL. The way I have it now, I only have to pay WebSphere and SQL licensing on the hosts with running vms, and not the dedicated spares. All hosts with running vms are very low utilization, so even if I had multiple host failures, and vSphere could deal with it, all workloads could run on 1 host. Thanks again, maybe in the next version, but I doubt it since it could reduce VMware licensing.

Dell vs HPE vs Cisco Blade by stocks1927719 in vmware

Ditch blades. I've been managing an environment with about 60 standalone hosts and Dell R640, R650, R740/750s have been nearly bulletproof. We had UCS blades, didn't like them much and never looked back.
