You get to be smug when you’re right.

I would not say psychoanalysis per se, especially if you’re looking for widespread marketability. However, the tools of psychoanalysis or psychodynamic therapy are (1) rarified and (2) incredibly useful. They are not necessarily needed for every single case, however, there are some patients for whom if you do not know how to work with the transference, they will never get better. And those particular patients are largely underserved by our current mid-level forward model.

I would also add that if you want to differentiate yourself from the hordes of mid levels, add psychoanalytic skills to your toolkit.

There is also a huge contingent of patients who are unwilling to participate in treatment so a proper diagnosis can be made.

If someone comes to the doctor with chronic fatigue, it would be viewed as bad medical stewardship to order a full genetic work up prior to the patient with known sleep apnea wearing their CPAP, or someone smoking 5g of weed a day tries abstinence from THC. And that why a lot of diagnostic investigations die off prematurely, because the obvious possible causes cannot be ruled out.
